I'm not sure how Tetris can be called overrated.
It's a good game don't get me wrong, there's just too much luck involved. How many times have you stacked your blocks all nice and neat but then die because you didn't get a straight Tetris block in time?

I was watching some webvideo on Tetris recently and one of the people on it correctly noted that in 100 years, it's likely that only Tetris will be around in its original form. It's flawless.
Considering how many variations there already are, I doubt this.
here's the original version: http://www.abandonia.com/en/games/69/Tetris.html
― abanana, Sunday, 4 May 2008 23:38 (sixteen years ago) link
I have never played any of the PC or Amiga games on this list. I really wish I could play Civilization some day.
― Mr. Snrub, Sunday, 4 May 2008 23:39 (sixteen years ago) link
Plenty, but that just adds another level of strategy to the game. Also, new versions of Tetris that let you see 5 pieces in advance are st00pid because it destroys that element of luck. Admit it, your life is better off because you've yelled "C'MON LONG PIECE, FUCK!" a million times.

Well, of course there are variations on Tetris, but I mean a version will likely still exist with the same gameplay, same basic shapes, same dropping mechanism, same gradually increasing speed, etc. You could add elements like a shop where you can spend 10,000 of your accrued point on a long piece, or you could throw in powerups or something, but it's more likely that the original version will remain the most popular.

Bravo once again to Dom, for gnawing a way a month with suspense and completely consuming my weekend with the results. Now THAT's what a great poll should be!
My ballot... REVEALED:
#1: Ultima VII #2: Sid Meier's Civilization II #3: Sid Meier's Pirates! #4: Super Mario Brothers 3 #5: King's Quest #6: Castlevania: Symphony Of the Night #7: Super Mario 64 #8: Tetris #9: Monkey Island #10: River City Ransom #11: Mega Man 2 #12: TMNT 4: Turtles in Time #13: Chrono Trigger #14: Legend of Zelda: A Link To The Past #15: Wolfenstein 3D #16: Zelda: Ocarina of Time #17: Sonic the Hedgehog #18: Tomb Raider #19: Super Metroid #20: Galaga #21: Commander Keen #22: Scorched Earth #23: Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver #24: Arkanoid #25: Master of Magic #26: Secret of Mana #27: Duck Tales #28: Final Fantasy III #29: Rygar #30: Last Ninja II
I guess I have pretty generic tastes, I dunno.
― Doctor Casino, Sunday, 4 May 2008 23:49 (sixteen years ago) link
Civ II is kind of weird in that I've played it the most of any Civ and it's obviously terrific, but it also has bad parts (caravan trading, micromanagement) that the later games fixed. And yet it's still my favorite.
― abanana, Sunday, 4 May 2008 23:50 (sixteen years ago) link
I must have REALLY boring taste, I think only 2 of my votes didn't make the top 100 (FFIII and Jungle Strike).
― Z S, Sunday, 4 May 2008 23:51 (sixteen years ago) link
best first
Another World (aka Out Of This World) Super Metroid Chrono Trigger We Love Katamari Metroid: Zero Mission Super Mario 64 Ico Legend of Zelda: A Link To The Past Super Mario World Sid Meier's Civilization II Legend of Zelda Super Mario Brothers 3 Metal Gear Solid Super Mario Galaxy Spellbreaker Grim Fandango Final Fantasy XII Monkey Island The Secret of Monkey Island II: Le Chuck's Revenge Galaga Final Fantasy III The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker Castlevania: Symphony Of the Night Final Fantasy VII Grand Theft Auto: Vice City Super Mario Bros Dragon Quest VIII Fallout Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver A Mind Forever Voyaging
― abanana, Sunday, 4 May 2008 23:53 (sixteen years ago) link
It is amazing that Chrono Trigger was #11 but Final Fantasy VI didn't even place.
― Mr. Snrub, Sunday, 4 May 2008 23:53 (sixteen years ago) link
I wonder if the inclusion of Civ 4 as a choice would have split the vote much. It were an option, I would have voted for 4 and not even listed 2.
― Z S, Sunday, 4 May 2008 23:55 (sixteen years ago) link
I was thinking the same thing! They're different enough games that I felt justified having both on my ballot...very odd.

Ballot:
Defender
Chuckie Egg Bubble Bobble Guitar Hero Legend of Zelda: A Link To The Past Super Mario Kart Super Mario World Tetris Grand Theft Auto: Vice City Singstar series Dance Dance Revolution Bomberman Zelda: Ocarina of Time
International Track & Field Tempest Elite
Marble Madness R-Type Mega Man 2 Boulderdash Paradroid Lords of Midnight Super Mario Galaxy Football Manager series (Kevin Tom) Rainbow Islands Galaga Head Over Heels Sonic the Hedgehog Spy Hunter The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker
I know no-one cares.
Were there any RTS games in the list? Or even nominated? No flight simulators either, haha.
Glad Cannon Fodder & Worms placed - awesome use of graphical limitations to portray cartoonish violence, excellent soundtrack/sound design, and fun just to muck around in. Lemmings kinda fits in here, too.
Interesting that Blizzard only managed to get one game on the list - Diablo 2 was pretty much a souped-up Gauntlet clickfest, which is GREAT - more of an action game than an RPG. Really wish The Lost Vikings or Starcraft had been nominated - Blizzard are like Rockstar (or, y'know, insert-Japanese-gaming-company-here) with the level of detail/easter eggs in their worlds. Anyone apart from HI DERE w/me?

i've had a hard disk failure since I sent my ballot so have forgotten what my picks were. But apparently
1. SMB3 2. Chuckie Egg 3. Rainbow Islands
All three transcendent platform games, each without flaw and a self-contained wonder in itself.
That said, have very few complaints about civ2 being top of our list (Dom it must have been top 10 for me, no?)
Have to say, this is why I <3 ILX. Good work everyone.
― Thomas, Monday, 5 May 2008 00:11 (sixteen years ago) link
I've definately played more Master Of Magic than any of the Civ games, probably because the endgame never dragged out as long as those of Civ, & was more fun to tweak what you started with.
