i've heard it out quite a lot. it's not amazing but it works well in most sets, it's pretty malleable and you can ~repurpose~ it to your own ends.

lex pretend, Saturday, 4 July 2009 10:48 (fourteen years ago) link

Is the grime-orchestral backing ripped from "Are You Really From The Ends"? They should so revive the VIP mix of that as a funky track.

Tim F, Saturday, 4 July 2009 11:05 (fourteen years ago) link

i kind of assumed the whole song was a jump-off from that track...

lex pretend, Saturday, 4 July 2009 11:10 (fourteen years ago) link

not as good though...

Tim F, Saturday, 4 July 2009 11:13 (fourteen years ago) link

I want to draw special attention to Mighty Moe's "Ride Again", which I haven't discussed in this thread:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dmdbYnwjT0Y

1) Welcome home Mighty Moe! I've missed you since yr amazing verse on Static's "Charge". I love your total indifference to the notion of actually saying much at all.

2) That beat! Compare and contrast with my comments way at the top of this thread - "I like that the genre is increasingly coalescing around that post "Cure & The Cause" sound but with a stronger Carribean influence - I'm hoping it becomes even more syncopated." Look how far we've come! This is like "Mash Up Da Venue" headwrecking business.

3) The stabbing piano chords. I feel like funky is just doing so much great community work under the heading "promotion of the public benefit of piano".

FINALLY.

Matt DC, Thursday, 9 July 2009 14:33 (fourteen years ago) link

dont like the mighty moe so much but the stush is great (more female mcs please). she has already come back though, on that f yr x tune with sway last year...

titchy (titchyschneiderMk2), Thursday, 9 July 2009 14:39 (fourteen years ago) link

*more female mcs over funky i mean. i think theres a dynamite one out there that ive not yet heard...

titchy (titchyschneiderMk2), Thursday, 9 July 2009 14:40 (fourteen years ago) link

One of the best things about funky is that it's a great vehicle for awesome female MCs who either missed out on grime altogether (Ms Dynamite, Lady Stush) or were unjustifiably sidelined by it (Shystie).

Matt DC, Thursday, 9 July 2009 14:48 (fourteen years ago) link

fingers x'ed for no lay to be next...

lex pretend, Thursday, 9 July 2009 14:57 (fourteen years ago) link

No Lay might be a bit aggressive and confrontational but you never know.

Matt DC, Thursday, 9 July 2009 15:02 (fourteen years ago) link

She should voice "Time To Get Nasty" for sure.

Tim F, Thursday, 9 July 2009 15:07 (fourteen years ago) link

even shystie is a bit much for funky, never mind no lay.

titchy (titchyschneiderMk2), Thursday, 9 July 2009 15:22 (fourteen years ago) link

titchy have you heard the "Pull It Wheel It" remix tho? it's fabulous!

Tim F, Thursday, 9 July 2009 15:24 (fourteen years ago) link

Haha considering my favourite record this year is Your Eye Too Fast I'm not really sure what I mean by "too aggressive and confrontational" here.

Matt DC, Thursday, 9 July 2009 15:24 (fourteen years ago) link

i really liked shystie when she was around. i think she was a better mc than a lot of the male mcs who had more hype around them than her for whatever reason. i know that track tim - its not bad. id really like to hear stush sound a bit more on-form (that track up there is good but she doesnt sound as on it as she usually is) and dynamite on some funky (spyro played some old dynamite last night which made me remember just how insanely lethal she was). hot like fire with sticky was cool but the chorus just totally dragged the momentum down - i hate when producers do that fast/slow switch.

titchy (titchyschneiderMk2), Thursday, 9 July 2009 15:30 (fourteen years ago) link

there was a snippet on the heatwave blog of the new dynamite + geeneus track

just sayin, Thursday, 9 July 2009 15:32 (fourteen years ago) link

Not sure if you saw upthread but Dynamite has voiced Geeneus' "Crackish", what I've heard sounds pretty amazing.

xpost!

Tim F, Thursday, 9 July 2009 15:33 (fourteen years ago) link

just heard it. sounds brill. not as rigorous/dextrous as the old stuff but still good. geeneus is an insanely good producer.

titchy (titchyschneiderMk2), Thursday, 9 July 2009 15:37 (fourteen years ago) link

(i meant shes not as dextrous as how she used to be, not geeneus).

titchy (titchyschneiderMk2), Thursday, 9 July 2009 15:37 (fourteen years ago) link

i'm gonna wait til i hear the full thing in decent quality to judge but the snippet is v promising. i hate snippets and radio rips though. she sounded dexterous enough on 'bad gyal' which, when all is said and done, is still prob my favourite of the female mc funky tracks...

lex pretend, Thursday, 9 July 2009 15:41 (fourteen years ago) link

i think stush is a perfect female funky mc - playful, feminine (but not in a speech debelle kind of way lol), funny as fuck, and pretty nifty in how she rides the beat. thats why i didnt like too many man - too gruff, forceful, and heavyhanded but why KIGs tune is still great.

titchy (titchyschneiderMk2), Thursday, 9 July 2009 15:44 (fourteen years ago) link

I love Too Many Man but then I think of it as grime really.

Matt DC, Thursday, 9 July 2009 15:46 (fourteen years ago) link

I'd say it's both.

Sarges B. Mackin! (The Reverend), Friday, 10 July 2009 00:11 (fourteen years ago) link

grunky innit.

titchy (titchyschneiderMk2), Friday, 10 July 2009 11:48 (fourteen years ago) link

One of my favourite female MC funky performances is the female MC that Heatwave feature on top of Sami Sanchez's "Dirty Trumpet" at the beginning of their 21 May show. Not sure if it's a dubplate or if it was done live or what but it's jawdropping.

Tim F, Friday, 10 July 2009 16:02 (fourteen years ago) link

haha i love how tim's favourite [x] is always some random moment in a radio show

lex pretend, Friday, 10 July 2009 16:09 (fourteen years ago) link

yeah I know it's all a bit lol tim. But that's how it is! i just love all this stuff so much. I'm currently writing a long epic piece on how listening to funky has kinda remapped a lot of my thoughts about music generally, which is an even more stereotypically me thing to do.

Also listened to my favourite Mak10 show tonight (the one from March with the tracklisting above) and was struck again by just how many brilliant tracks there are on it, so many of which I still don't know the identity of...

Tim F, Friday, 10 July 2009 16:39 (fourteen years ago) link

Okay, so the Cooly G set currently up on the rinsefm site is great great great, much better than the Fact mix I reckon.

Should we be excited by the upcoming Marcus Nasty Rinse mix? (Rinse 10)

sam500, Tuesday, 14 July 2009 02:29 (fourteen years ago) link

Anybody wanna be awesome and up that Cooly G set that Tim linked to a few posts ago somewhere? The new Rinse site seems rather impossible to download from right now.

maciej recognizing trill, Tuesday, 14 July 2009 14:28 (fourteen years ago) link

i only have the CC cudi rmx on their mixed album, jordan (i assume you have this?) but maybe the greenmoney rmx will tide you over http://www.4shared.com/file/94148484/892f060a/Kid_Cudi_vs_Crookers_-_Day_N_Nite__Green_Moneys_Up_All_Nite_Remix__wwwmusic4youhu.html

think tim repped for greenmoney's busy signal remix upthread too - also recommend their remix of twizzle's 'skydiving', and their 'love lockdown' one is worth hearing too

lex pretend, Tuesday, 14 July 2009 14:32 (fourteen years ago) link

im excited for the marcus rinse mix but am wondering what it will sound like without an mc... hope its not just all his favourites that have been rinsed (no pun) out though...

titchy (titchyschneiderMk2), Tuesday, 14 July 2009 14:37 (fourteen years ago) link

I'm kinda hoping that he does include a lot of his favourites that I rarely hear anywhere else, e.g:

- "If you want it then you gotta take it boy you gotta ask for it don't ya wanna own it honey"
- DevineRecordings/Madd.One - Gotta Have It ( the one that goes "dap dap daabbherber!!")
- Lil' Silva - Tribal Land
- DJ Naughty - Love Lockdown
- Yazz - Energy

Tim F, Tuesday, 14 July 2009 15:19 (fourteen years ago) link

from the guardian review - It's a quick-fire mix that catapults the listener through 30 new tracks in just over an hour, where you're as likely to hear an uninterrupted stretch of steel pans, synths and soca as a song like Roska and Jamie George's quirky, charming Wonderful Day. Accordingly, Marcus Nasty mixes the grit of grime (Lil Silva's Seasons ), with R&B vocals (Fuzzy Logic feat Egypt's In the Morning) in a raw ride that makes you want to reach for the airhorn.

just sayin, Tuesday, 14 July 2009 15:30 (fourteen years ago) link

So of course the Guardian singles out "Wonderful Day" for special praise.

Wait till some chancer collaborates with wotsisname from the Arctic Monkeys.

OTOH a blend of "Seasons" and "In The Morning" could be :-O

Tim F, Tuesday, 14 July 2009 15:42 (fourteen years ago) link

A pedant writes, but that was actually in the Observer rather than the Guardian. Possibly the OMM now I come to think of it. The Graun has largely ignored funky up to now, one Crazy Cousinz interview notwithstanding.

Matt DC, Tuesday, 14 July 2009 15:44 (fourteen years ago) link

Actually the Observer makes more sense.

Tim F, Tuesday, 14 July 2009 15:47 (fourteen years ago) link

No wait Matt you're wrong:

http://www.guardian.co.uk/music/2009/jul/12/funky-house-rinse-10-review

Tim F, Tuesday, 14 July 2009 15:48 (fourteen years ago) link

i think matt's right, i remember seeing that in the omm...

do they combine their stuff on the website?

just sayin, Tuesday, 14 July 2009 15:49 (fourteen years ago) link

It's a bit cute to claim that Sean Paul has "recorded a version" of "Inflation". Indifferently and sub-standardly freestyling over the top of a tune while flicking through a magazine didn't amount to "recording a version" last time I checked.

Tim F, Tuesday, 14 July 2009 15:50 (fourteen years ago) link

Oh yeah, the piece is attributed to The Observer actually.

Tim F, Tuesday, 14 July 2009 15:51 (fourteen years ago) link

Nah that's the Observer, you can see in the byline. All Observer content is on the Guardian website as a matter of course, the former being essentially the Guardian on Sunday. </Britishes>

(xpost - damn, I'd been looking forward to that Sean Paul track)

Matt DC, Tuesday, 14 July 2009 15:51 (fourteen years ago) link

plus sean paul rode inflation quite poorly. that reviewer does all the observers grime/dubstep/funky stuff though so im assuming she knows her stuff.
