he wears super expensive clothes and still manages to look like ass, the ultimate power move

lag∞n, Friday, 24 July 2020 02:58 (three years ago) link

lol I read the comment before looking at the tweet image and thought it was actually peter dinklage for unknown reasons

solo scampito (mh), Sunday, 26 July 2020 01:36 (three years ago) link

it’d be hilarious if there was a twitter movie and he was played by dinklage

Does The Left Need To Get Off Twitter? https://t.co/iLs255SDZ5

— Aaron Bastani (@AaronBastani) August 2, 2020

Genuine question I think, if construed properly.

Every so often on Twitter, my timeline gets blown up with all sorts of news about the University of Arkansas and its athletic program. I mean, I get it. I live in the same state. Complaining about an overabundance of Razorback news here would be like living in the ocean and complaining about water.

But I see the soccer coaches reposted. Media stories on not just the ever-popular football and basketball teams, but retweets of the golf team's performance. Here's not even a retweet, but someone simply "liking" a post made by the school's athletic director. And it's one of those things that reminds me that even after more than a decade fucking around with this website, Twitter.com simply doesn't know me at all.

Which is fine. I don't really want them to know me that well. But hell. There's something a little offensive about being lumped in as a rabid Hogs fan just because I'm a 40something male who has a bunch of 40something male friends who are rabid Hogs fans. I mean, I'm really surprised that I don't see more Trump bullshit, since I fit that fucking demographic in every sort of fucking way.

I used to produce a Saturday morning radio show for a mortgage title company. If you couldn't tell, hosting a radio show wasn't those guys' first trait. It was all done as part of a marketing campaign, no more of a real radio show than the TV guys who try to sell you siding during commercial breaks of Hondo. The main guy would set up the rest of the show and try to bring in some callers by addressing the listeners directly:

"Listen. I know it's Saturday morning. You're out there shopping at the Big Box Stores, browsing the home section. You're thinking about the Razorbacks game this afternoon. But I want you to take a moment and think about how much money you could save in your family budget if you refinanced your house title. Your wife would be very happy to have a little bit extra to buy something nice..."

It was the most pandering way to talk down to an audience. It showed no respect for the people out there who might be tuning in while looking for a parking space. And after about six months, the title company ended its radio contract. Last I heard the title guy had become a schoolteacher. (And why yes, he was a former Razorback. Special teams.)

The trend in marketing for personalization is a step in the right direction for that industry. I've seen too many white guys lean back in their chairs and project this shapeless sort of personality on to a target audience. "People don't CARE about Bush or Kerry! They're just out there at Murray Park, trying to get little Johnny to catch a football." NO, THEY'RE NOT ALL DOING THAT.

But Twitter. It pulls that Razorback trip on me at least once a month, and I have to go through again and say, "No, I don't care about this tweet. No, you can show me fewer tweets from HogFan73 please." They don't care. Which I'm fine with. It just seems like a big waste of time on their part, and on mine.

But, hey. That's a pretty good description of the Internet anyway. Go Hogs.

why dont u just turn "recent tweets" on

lag∞n, Wednesday, 5 August 2020 13:14 (three years ago) link

*latest tweets

lag∞n, Wednesday, 5 August 2020 13:15 (three years ago) link

Very good point, and I'm glad you asked that.

That feature is also a step in my monthly (or weekly) reset of the place. Because as you know, as soon as I turn "latest tweets" on...

pplains, Wednesday, 5 August 2020 13:19 (three years ago) link

And hell, I wouldn't mind leaving it on "Top Tweets" if I could personalize it a bit more. "Hey, this guy with all the black dots in his name is pretty cool. Lemmee just subscribe to these politics and humor lists here. See, Twitter.com? See what I'm doing here?"

why can’t we all just start using chord keyboards NOW. bill english used one in the original “mother of all tech demos”. it’s beyond insane to me that EVEN WITH A TOUCH SCREEN we’re still using a 1-to-1 representation of the alphabet that dates from an era when the layout of the keys was dictated by which metal levers would be least likely to interfere with each other when fired in rapid succession.

Li'l Brexit (Tracer Hand), Wednesday, 5 August 2020 18:22 (three years ago) link

bc we all learned on that one

Threads like this are a wild ride

I haven’t spoken with @TheEllenShow and can only speak from my own experience. She & her team have only treated me & my team w/ respect & kindness. She never pandered to celebrity which I always saw as a refreshing honesty. When things aren’t right she handles it and fixes.

Still kinda blows me away when people like Ashton actually get into the responding to the replies like that. Although I thought it was hilarious whenever Seth Rogen did it to specifically tell all the MAGAs to fuck off.

“This account owner limits who can view their tweets”?? OK, how do I join the tweeter’s exclusive private club?

Mr. Snrub, Friday, 28 August 2020 11:10 (three years ago) link

That's what it says when someone has blocked you, right? It's what I see when someone quotes or replies to Emily Nussbaum.

jaymc, Friday, 28 August 2020 14:14 (three years ago) link

it's also what you see if they've set their account to private

lag∞n, Friday, 28 August 2020 15:22 (three years ago) link

it says you’re blocked when you navigate to the profile page but “unavailable” when it’s quote tweeted or in a reply chain

maura, Saturday, 29 August 2020 13:12 (three years ago) link

just got one that said "this is not available to you"

lag∞n, Wednesday, 2 September 2020 19:35 (three years ago) link

Yeah, it's only their profile where is says explicitly that you are blocked. I've only ever been blocked once that I know of, and by Tom Scharpling, of all people. I made a stupid, badly formed joke about wrestling in response to something he tweeted and he made fun of me for only having 40 followers and then blocked me, all within like 30 seconds.

It really only sucks because now, five or six years later, I never get to see the rare times he shares big news on Twitter and all I see are blank retweets from other Best Show guys and FOT.
