Still seems fishy to me that no prominent GOPers got hit with this.

Someone I follow observed last night that he couldn't tweet this AP link:

Someone else surmised that Twitter may now be blocking strings of characters that resemble bitcoin wallet addresses.

Would have been easier and more profitable to short $TSLA and then get on Musk's account and power dive it into the ground.

Par-lay, apparently. Kind of ironic seeing as the last thing these bigots want is a parley.

Not necessarily, people are shorting Tesla all day every day (and on balance losing shitloads of money on it), it wouldn't be easy to pick you out of the crowds when it started paying out.

Andrew Farrell, Friday, 17 July 2020 17:00 (three years ago) link

lagoon probably means on the hacking side. causing a widely held stock like TSLA to tank would expose you to a lot more legal problems than the Bitcoin scheme, even if they never matched you to the specific short position, which of course they would anyway

the pinefox, Sunday, 2 August 2020 15:19 (three years ago) link

Every so often on Twitter, my timeline gets blown up with all sorts of news about the University of Arkansas and its athletic program. I mean, I get it. I live in the same state. Complaining about an overabundance of Razorback news here would be like living in the ocean and complaining about water.

But I see the soccer coaches reposted. Media stories on not just the ever-popular football and basketball teams, but retweets of the golf team's performance. Here's not even a retweet, but someone simply "liking" a post made by the school's athletic director. And it's one of those things that reminds me that even after more than a decade fucking around with this website, Twitter.com simply doesn't know me at all.

Which is fine. I don't really want them to know me that well. But hell. There's something a little offensive about being lumped in as a rabid Hogs fan just because I'm a 40something male who has a bunch of 40something male friends who are rabid Hogs fans. I mean, I'm really surprised that I don't see more Trump bullshit, since I fit that fucking demographic in every sort of fucking way.

I used to produce a Saturday morning radio show for a mortgage title company. If you couldn't tell, hosting a radio show wasn't those guys' first trait. It was all done as part of a marketing campaign, no more of a real radio show than the TV guys who try to sell you siding during commercial breaks of Hondo. The main guy would set up the rest of the show and try to bring in some callers by addressing the listeners directly:

"Listen. I know it's Saturday morning. You're out there shopping at the Big Box Stores, browsing the home section. You're thinking about the Razorbacks game this afternoon. But I want you to take a moment and think about how much money you could save in your family budget if you refinanced your house title. Your wife would be very happy to have a little bit extra to buy something nice..."

It was the most pandering way to talk down to an audience. It showed no respect for the people out there who might be tuning in while looking for a parking space. And after about six months, the title company ended its radio contract. Last I heard the title guy had become a schoolteacher. (And why yes, he was a former Razorback. Special teams.)

The trend in marketing for personalization is a step in the right direction for that industry. I've seen too many white guys lean back in their chairs and project this shapeless sort of personality on to a target audience. "People don't CARE about Bush or Kerry! They're just out there at Murray Park, trying to get little Johnny to catch a football." NO, THEY'RE NOT ALL DOING THAT.

But Twitter. It pulls that Razorback trip on me at least once a month, and I have to go through again and say, "No, I don't care about this tweet. No, you can show me fewer tweets from HogFan73 please." They don't care. Which I'm fine with. It just seems like a big waste of time on their part, and on mine.

But, hey. That's a pretty good description of the Internet anyway. Go Hogs.

And hell, I wouldn't mind leaving it on "Top Tweets" if I could personalize it a bit more. "Hey, this guy with all the black dots in his name is pretty cool. Lemmee just subscribe to these politics and humor lists here. See, Twitter.com? See what I'm doing here?"

why canā€™t we all just start using chord keyboards NOW. bill english used one in the original ā€œmother of all tech demosā€. itā€™s beyond insane to me that EVEN WITH A TOUCH SCREEN weā€™re still using a 1-to-1 representation of the alphabet that dates from an era when the layout of the keys was dictated by which metal levers would be least likely to interfere with each other when fired in rapid succession.

Threads like this are a wild ride

I havenā€™t spoken with @TheEllenShow and can only speak from my own experience. She & her team have only treated me & my team w/ respect & kindness. She never pandered to celebrity which I always saw as a refreshing honesty. When things arenā€™t right she handles it and fixes.
