Where are you Matador when we want a Helium Bsides set?

there is such a thing floating around slsk--someone's compiled them

mookieproof (mookieproof), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 15:52 (nineteen years ago) link

i have the b-sides comp in my slsk shares. fyi.

maria tessa sciarrino (theoreticalgirl), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 16:59 (nineteen years ago) link

I have them too, I just want an official, beautiful sounding copy of Hole in the Ground, Lucy, American Jean, etc

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 17:29 (nineteen years ago) link

isn't scout niblett a drummer? not like i really wanna find out for sure.

hstencil (hstencil), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 17:32 (nineteen years ago) link

You're right, I think she is. Thus, the joke failed on several levels.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 18:38 (nineteen years ago) link

my favorites thus far: on the floor, return to pirates, 9 x 3. the latter sounds so so so much like autoclave!

maria tessa sciarrino (theoreticalgirl), Thursday, 3 March 2005 19:54 (nineteen years ago) link

This thread is making me jealous.

Raymond Cummings (Raymond Cummings), Thursday, 3 March 2005 21:43 (nineteen years ago) link

On first listen, this record could use some bass.

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Thursday, 3 March 2005 22:19 (nineteen years ago) link

i think mary timony's toured with SK in the past, matt. i remember djing a SK show where mary opened. or was it le tigre? ill need to check my notes on this.

maria tessa sciarrino (theoreticalgirl), Friday, 4 March 2005 01:53 (nineteen years ago) link

Oh, I know that they have toured together, I saw them on that tour. It just would make more sense for them to tour together now since they both are going through a resurgant period right now. Ex Hex and The Woods compliment each other pretty well.

Matthew C Perpetua (inca), Friday, 4 March 2005 16:56 (nineteen years ago) link

I have a promo now, and so am no longer jealous.

Two spins so far. Not sure how I rate Ex Hex. On the one hand it sounds so different from MT's recent efforts -- just deeper and more showy in a good way (i.e. I thought The Golden Dove was her reaching the end of the sound she was doing then -- it's my least favorite of any of her efforts, despite the indisputable greatness of "Blood Tree" and a few other okay tracks I can't make myself listen to the while thing) -- but it hasn't got me flippin' my shit just yet. A grower, maybe. It's like when I first heard Pig Lib and thought "Whoa, what's happening here, this is UGLY" and then the next day it all made sense and I was in love.

Raymond Cummings (Raymond Cummings), Monday, 7 March 2005 16:06 (nineteen years ago) link

After 2 listens, the first side of the record is really good and the second side dissolves a bit into sameyness, albeit good sameyness.

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Monday, 7 March 2005 16:56 (nineteen years ago) link

there's a couple clunkers on the record, i agree. but overall, im just excited that she's changing track.

maria tessa sciarrino (theoreticalgirl), Monday, 7 March 2005 17:18 (nineteen years ago) link

The un-Timony Timony!

It’s like she all of a sudden realized that it was time to change things up a wee bit.

Raymond Cummings (Raymond Cummings), Monday, 7 March 2005 17:43 (nineteen years ago) link

Does anyone say Ti-moan-ee instead of Tim-on-knee thanks to Sleater Kinney's "I Wanna Be Your Joey Ramone Mary Timony" ?

Actually, The Golden Dove is really growing on me. It's actually quite good if you're willing to stretch beyond indie rock.

Shatterproof Glass (dymaxia), Friday, 11 March 2005 17:26 (nineteen years ago) link

ive been saying the golden dove was awesome for a while now, but no one wants to believe me...

maria tessa sciarrino (theoreticalgirl), Friday, 11 March 2005 17:50 (nineteen years ago) link

I like the Golden Dove too, lots even. Dirt of Luck is pretty good, but I'd rather listen to the Magic City, less indie or something.

couldnt they have picked someone who was a bit more, um, into this record?

http://pitchforkmedia.com/record-reviews/t/timony_mary/ex-hex.shtml

i dont like to hate on pitchfork but this disappointed me.

maria tessa sciarrino (theoreticalgirl), Thursday, 7 April 2005 00:17 (nineteen years ago) link

Yeah, that was a pretty tossed off review. Seems like he was just trying to reach his minimum word count.

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Thursday, 7 April 2005 01:29 (nineteen years ago) link

pitchfork should have asked me to write that review. i would have ruled!

I think I like this record more than anything else that's come out this year. Has anyone seen any of her recent shows? I'm gonna have to trek up to Baton Rouge to see her and I want to know what to expect.

adam (adam), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 17:13 (nineteen years ago) link

Weird that she's playing Pensacola and not Tallahassee. I can't imagine her having more than one or two fans there, if any. You're bound to draw more interest in a college town, even though I'm not sure how many people here would see her, either.

That's not cocaine! It's Ian Riese-Moraine! (Eastern Mantra), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 18:34 (nineteen years ago) link

I saw her about a year ago and she had already gone into "rock mode." I thought it was kind of annoying, she was fucking up a lot and didn't sound that great and acting like it didn't matter. She was having fun, but I wasn't. I preferred her when I saw her before, playing keyboards with an accompaniest on percussion. But I am a minor fan, I went because my gf really likes her, and the gf had fun, so maybe others might like it better.

n/a (Nick A.), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 18:52 (nineteen years ago) link

I prefer her Helium stuff - the dirt of luck def being my favorite. Ive had a huge crush on her for ages but she really sucked live the last time I saw her - that was like a couple years ago. she's still super hot though. not that it matters...

OMG, i just got back from seeing her live. Her guitar playing is better than anyone in the wrold. My brain totally melted.

mts (theoreticalgirl), Sunday, 4 June 2006 05:31 (seventeen years ago) link

perhaps MT is the best guitarist in the "wrold", but on planet earth there are a few million better guitarists.

her set is surprisingly rocking. very good drummer.

Oooh, a snarky response inspired by a typo and look! You duped the post. Classic, pal.

I wasn't able to catch her on the Ex Hex tour, so I missed out on the early days of the band. Last night they were SOLID. The new stuff shows promise. Seriously one of the best guitar players out there, even better than Uncle Tom.

So her new album The Shapes We Make is basically a continuation of Ex Hex although it sounds even more like Helium. She won't win any originality points for her guitar riffs, but at least the songs are good.

Michael F Gill, Saturday, 9 June 2007 10:44 (sixteen years ago) link

i used to really like "xxx" - i think if i heard it now i'd want it to be twice the speed

Tracer Hand, Saturday, 9 June 2007 14:13 (sixteen years ago) link

sharpshooter is a heck of a song! my verdict is still out on if i like this new one better than ex hex. we'll see. i think it's actually harder and more "up" than the last one, which is the direction i want her to go in. i like the golden dove, but i love it when she rocks on the guitar. yes yes yes.

i saw her open for le tigre (weird bill, right?) and she was great, even if she was playing to a crowd of disco lesbians.

Emily Bjurnhjam, Saturday, 9 June 2007 16:58 (sixteen years ago) link

She's out touring with a band in the US for the next week or so--Bloomington tonight. She's also been doing some shows as a member of Amy Domingues band Garland of Hours.

curmudgeon, Saturday, 9 June 2007 17:06 (sixteen years ago) link

ex hex left me kinda cold, but she earned back mega points with me when i saw her touring it in toronto and she covered "i'm your man".

I like the new one, too.

I saw that Reckless had a used copy of Ex Hex via their site, but when a went to the store a couple hours later it was sold. I wonder if someone else was inspired by this thread? I did pick up The Shapes We Make, and about to listen to it now. I can't believe I missed these before!

Really like the new song, but the melody is insanely familiar. Crimson & Clover? Something else?

She played a really fun set of all Prince covers at the Black Cat 20th Anniversary thing with members of Shudder to Think and GVSB. I hope somebody recorded it.

Sounds like a riff that's been used many times over the years. Superdrag came to mind of all things, especially the guitar solo/melodies on "Sucked Out" / "Destination Ursa Major"

Baba O'Riley? Toto's I'll Supply The Love? I think the bridge from My Sharona is in there as well.

http://www.washingtoncitypaper.com/blogs/artsdesk/music/2013/10/17/one-track-mind-ex-hex-hot-and-cold/

Timony says she derived “Hot and Cold” partly from Tommy James and the Shondells’ 1968 hit, “Crimson and Clover.” But she also extracted inspiration from a shiny new toy: her 1977 Les Paul Special. “I have a new guitar and I’m really psyched about it,” she says. “It just sounds a lot different from my other guitars so all these [new] songs come from that.”

The new Ex Hex tune streaming at Pitchfork is great. So happy she's back without Wild Flag.

To answer my own question from three months ago...

Really like the new song, but the melody is insanely familiar. Crimson & Clover? Something else?

The part of the verse starting at :18 seconds was killing me, but it's the "It was only fantasy / the wall was too high, as you can see / no matter how he tried, He could not break free..." part of "Hey You" by Pink Floyd that was itchin' me
