do raccoons steal eggs?

We had raccoons in our chimney once so we hired some people to come trap them and release them somewhere safe.

i just read a book about a sea turtle to the kids before bed and a raccoon in the book gobbled up the baby sea turtles. and the sea turtle eggs. these things happen.

there is a gopher living under our house. thing is huge. kinda cute.

The truth is that lots of animals like to steal eggs out of nests. They are highly nutritious and do not fight back.

Raccoons steal eggs. Crows steal eggs. Jays steal eggs. Snakes steal eggs. It's a common way to get a cheap meal.

The parents will often attempt to drive off an intruder, but even they can recognize when this is a hopeless task, and the odds favor letting the predator have its way. After all, a dead parent can't protect a nest from being robbed anyway, but a live parent can start a new nest and lay new eggs.

This is weird - I just discovered raccoons in the attic, babies and everything. I don't want to kill them. Anyone know anything about trapping?

your local Humane Society may have live traps for lending.

I think that a raccoon tore down some of our corn stalks! Then it husked the baby ears and gnawed on them! WTF.

Thanks sleeve. I'm learning that raccoons will eat almost anything, and they're very dextrous. Also, I have to admit, the little chittering sounds of the babies in the ceiling are truly teh cuet!

I'll work on it... although I have to confess that I'm wary of the (scarily large, actually) momma who could easily waylay me just as I line up the babies for photo shoots.

All this is complicated by my existing pets -- two dogs and a cat -- who are in various stages of hackles-raised unimpressedness re: the new family.

one night while walking home i thought i saw a cat, but then i realized it was too large to be a cat! even a fat cat! but it wasn't shaped like a dog. in silhouette it looked almost like a kangaroo as it went up on its hind legs. then it went into the tree! pretty sure it was a giant raccoon but i was a little too O_O to find out for sure and i crossed the street and walked on the other side, wondering if it was staring at me from its perch. that was one fat raccoon, i tell you what.

As a teenager, I used to sneak in and out of my parents' house at night through the back door, which was connected to a patio. The patio had several bird-feeders & raccoons would occasionally visit & feast on the birdseed which was inevitably strewn all over the place. Anyway, one time I returned home from a night of hallucinogen consumption & there were two or three raccoons about, one of which was HUGE (or at least seemed so at the time) & in the way of the stairs. I mistakenly assumed they, like most animals, would flee when they noticed a human approaching, but this one stood its ground, took a step toward me & HISSED. But I couldn't really make any scary sounds b/c I was trying to be discreet in my sneaking and all, so I just had to hang back and wait for the raccoons to finish eating before I could enter the house, which seemed to take an eternity, but again..

So I guess that, while raccoons are cute and all, I would generally recommend not infringing on their mealtime environs, esp. while hallucinating, unless you want to get FREAKED THE FUCK OUT!

It's true, they hiss. They also move toward you when you approach them! But apparently, according to stuff I'm reading online yet (probably significantly) haven't yet tried, if you stand your ground, they stop advancing and become confused. It's a whole world of bluff and counter-bluff with raccoons, apparently.

last night i had a few friends over for margaritas and put 'hot buttered soul' by isaac hayes on the turntable in the back house of our place, and two raccoons appeared on our roof and started having sex in front of everyone to the sounds of 'walk on by'

I was out walking the dog just now and saw two big things climbing up adjacent trees. At first I thought cats but nope, raccoons! I ran in and got my camera and in those couple mins either one hopped over and joined the other or he'd had a buddy all along cause there is def a second pair of eyes here:

The interesting thing about raccoons is they are solitary animals in the wild but city-living ("urbanized") raccoons thrive in groups. Urbanization has caused them to become social animals.

I think my favorite summer was the summer I lived across the street from a building where three raccoons lived on the roof. I just watched them groom one another all night.

we had two raccoons break into an office at work through the ceiling. they ate all the office m&m's, got diarrhea, and shit all over the place - like desks, copy machines, everywhere. they were found sleeping on the shelves in the supply room monday morning where they'd come in but couldn't climb back out.

Raccoons raped and killed our neighbor's cat. They are really not nice.

Anyway, they're back! Went outside to walk the dog and they were on the sidewalk but scurried up a tree as soon as they saw B. I ran back in to get my camera and got a couple shots of the baby. He is so cute. It's blurry because I can't hold my hands still . . .
