Mordy: metal isn't entirely a sound; it's also an attitude and state of mind. And Evocation definitely has a metal sensibility to it. Also, their last album was undeniably ferrous. This is just their acoustic record, which Euro metal bands love doing for some reason (that reason being that it usually sounds cool).

So obviously we're cheating here by knowing, for reasons external to this particular album, that Eluveitie "is" a metal band. But if we didn't, I think you still have as prominent clues the more-rock-than-folk drumming style on a bunch of songs (most particularly "Memento"), the growly male vocals on "Brictom" and "The Cauldron Of Renascence", and the thunking cadence of "Omnos" (even the regular version). But probably the more accurate thing I mean to say is that this feels to me like an album from the same band that did Slania, rather than, as the premise might have just as easily lead to, an album of some wholly other music that happens to share personnel with the earlier one.

I agree with Glenn. Metal is like porn: you know when you hear it.

don't cry, emo hamster (J3ff T.), Monday, 22 June 2009 19:32 (fourteen years ago) link

Jeff, is it fair to say that your ideal film would be a metal version of Pirates Of The Caribbean? (with added porn scenes It seems)

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Tuesday, 23 June 2009 14:50 (fourteen years ago) link

Guys that kinda already exists. Pirates, like the most expensive porn ever made. Complete with horrible CGI sequences.

and a drinking mans metal soundtrack?

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Tuesday, 23 June 2009 14:52 (fourteen years ago) link

My idea of hell: metal video + porn soundtrack.

glenn mcdonald, Tuesday, 23 June 2009 14:53 (fourteen years ago) link

Sounds like a Whitesnake vid for one of their ballads

works in that just as you think power metal couldn't possibly be any more shitey...?

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Tuesday, 23 June 2009 15:38 (fourteen years ago) link

not really a power metal fan but that works in that, if I didn't know the kp song already, I may not have guessed it was a mashup.

This show, which I believe is the LAMC (Latin Alternative Music Conference)'s first acknowledgement of metal, could be interesting, but I'm not gonna haul my ass out to Queens to find out. Chuck?

you can check out pics of the whole package there but here is the line-up for the lazy
Line-up for volume I. Out in June 2009

*Salome - blueprint (Fugazi)
*The Austrasian Goat - Mask (Bauhaus)
*Atavist - Mindless (Infest)
*Coffins - Ebony tears (Cathedral)
*Monarch - A look at tomorrow (Discharge)
*La Cuenta - It's in my Blood ! (Bl'ast)
*Fistula - Dead in a ditch ( D.R.I)
*HC Minds - Black Machine (Cirith Ungol)

Total mayhem of 41 minutes.

and this the line up for volume II (out later this year):

*Aguirre - like weeds (His Hero Is Gone)
*Thou - well fed fuck (Born Against)
*Hey Colossus - institutionalized (Suicidal Tendencies)
*Loss - fog (Goatlord)
*Golden Gorilla - absentee debate (Unbroken)
*On Pain Of Death - troops of doom (Sepultura)
*Moloch - lightening strikes twice (Rorschach)

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Wednesday, 24 June 2009 15:39 (fourteen years ago) link

Can't be arsed with the box but fancy getting that - vols 1 and 2 have a quality lineup for my money.

On a related subject, put Thou and Moloch on on Sunday and they were both really good. Thou's guitar tone is like an iceberg, it just keeps going deeper. Pretty lame turnout but them's the breaks I guess

Its a very nice box. Oak box is gone but mahogany is left.

That YOB album just keeps getting better the more I hear it.

I remember liking that one quite a bit.

"That YOB album just keeps getting better the more I hear it."

Same for me, and I've had rough mixes, and several different masters. And I get to travel with them to SF this weekend!

Nate Carson, Wednesday, 24 June 2009 18:37 (fourteen years ago) link

Xaspost - nice Xasthur review in the NYT. I've been playing "All reflections drained" again over the last week, and I've convinced myself that there's one track that sounds exactly like Serge Gainsbourg backed by Einsturzende Neubauten. It's definitely not a generic Xasthur record.

Soukesian, Wednesday, 24 June 2009 18:55 (fourteen years ago) link

I still need to get that new Xasthur record. In the meantime, actually shelled out the cash for the physical copy of new Coalesce. Its still great.

Post subject: update WORSHIP Last Vinyl Before Doomsday 10th Ann. LP
PostPosted: Mon Jun 22, 2009 11:53 pm

Just to give an update on the Worship "Last Vinyl Before Doomsday" 10th Anniversary reissue on LP. The vinyl is late. The cover and the inner sleeves are here (and look great), but we just got the test pressings (which sound great) so it will be another 2-3 weeks. Sorry but we are at the mercy of the pressing plant, who is slow these days.
Thanks to everyone who has already pre-ordered it. We will be including a free CD with each order. If you'd like to pre-order it (which means it will be shipped to you as soon as we get them) go to http://www.myspace.com/doommantrarecords and there is a link to order with paypal. it is $15 plus shipping.
For those who ordered the Colossloth LP, it will be here at the same time as the Worship.

I'm really digging it. What do the rest of you think?
Tried a search but can't find any threads on it.
