Really -- let's talk about this for a second. Is Loveless unbelievabl.y overrated? Think about it -- it's possible. I love it, too. It makes me feel completely overwhelmed, like I'm stranded in a studio with nowhere to go, where high frequencies are the norm and nothing sounds clear. It's all sound -- all dreamy, all fresh.

Except for those drums, which haunt me in their determinate sincerity. What the hell is it about them that just...stays there? Do they anchor the music or do they ground it? Because there's something about the rest of it all that feels so fucking free. But those drums -- they bring it all back down to earth, as if sound were not indeterminate at all. As if it were very much finite.

The thing about Loveless is that is should be anything I want it to be. But it isn't.

Why should it be anything you want it to be?

sleep (sleep), Saturday, 30 April 2005 04:36 (eighteen years ago) link

I guess you explained what you mean by that in the post (that it should be more formless and thus more malleable in the mind of the listener, i think?), but I guess I'm asking why any album should be expected to be everything/anything to everyone/anyone? Of course that's impossible.

sleep (sleep), Saturday, 30 April 2005 04:42 (eighteen years ago) link

The big question is between Cat Power and Kevin Shields will either of them manage to play a full set of songs?

Hari A$hur$t (Toaster), Saturday, 30 April 2005 08:38 (eighteen years ago) link

What, does Shields have trouble playing live? I thought the problem was getting his own stuff recorded to his satisfaction. Anyway it sounds like the show is going to consist of Smith's "The Coral Sea" (her elegy for Robert Mapplethorpe, published in 1996) with music by herself, Shields, and Power, so "full set of songs" is probably moot.

Uh, I'm probably not fucking there. As the effect of that potent little cup of Chantico™ wanes, it becomes clear that spending a thousand bucks or so basically just to go to one show is too insane at this point even for me, even to see two of my personal top five living artists (one of whom is in some sort of weird career limbo and whom I'll likely never get to see perform) on a stage together, probably for the only time ever. SOB. Somebody had better bootleg this, is all. Horses haters note: no one will have to "sit through" anything; see the schedule.

(However! When I got up yesterday I had perfect indie-rock bedhead, requiring no human intervention whatsoever, for the first and undoubtedly last time in my life. I'll take my karmic consolation prizes where I can find them.)

I am trying to get through on behalf of my friends. The rfh server seems to have melted down. Anyone got any 'no s' tricks?

Alba (Alba), Thursday, 5 May 2005 07:22 (eighteen years ago) link

i don't understand what you just said

shine headlights on me (electricsound), Thursday, 5 May 2005 07:30 (eighteen years ago) link

The Meltdown tickets went on sale 45 mins ago. The Royal Festival Hall website seems to have died, or is at least very overloaded. I can't connect to it anyway. I was wondering if anyone knew any secret way in. The 'no s' thing is a Glastonbury 2004 joke, sorry.

Shields has no problems performing live, he's been in The Primal Scream Retirement Home For Non-Burnt-Out Former Indie Band Members for five years now

kit brash (kit brash), Thursday, 5 May 2005 15:00 (eighteen years ago) link

I was talking about a full set of his own songs. i know he has no problem performing.

Hari A$hur$t (Toaster), Thursday, 5 May 2005 15:05 (eighteen years ago) link

he's only got to play one Patti Smith song here, so he should be able to pull it off

could be funny if Chan Marshall flakes onstage though, and Smith has to reprimand and corral her mid-set

two years pass...

so at the risk of being a credulous fool...

a boozy friend accosted shields over the weekend and he claimed the new mbv record was totally finished and he would be getting the gang together to tour it imminently. This pretty much tallies with the account of a mutual acquaintance who worked with the man 6 months or so ago. so maybe either ksheilds is a delusional tease or we might be getting some shinynewmbv. Has anyone heard anything that might corroborate this either way?

I reckons he says that to everyone who asks, every time, for the past five years...

Mark G, Monday, 16 July 2007 10:32 (sixteen years ago) link

He's been too busy hanging out at Sonic Cathedrals, celebrating himself, to record an album!

Masonic Boom, Monday, 16 July 2007 10:33 (sixteen years ago) link

precisely! he's been out and about a lot lately so maybe he has something to celebrate. he claimed that all the mbvers had been contacted and were pretty much ready to start rehearsing.

cw, Monday, 16 July 2007 10:36 (sixteen years ago) link

And once they've had nine years' of rehearsals, they should be ready to hit the road.

Matthew H, Monday, 16 July 2007 11:57 (sixteen years ago) link

i'm only interested if dave conway is involved

electricsound, Monday, 16 July 2007 11:58 (sixteen years ago) link

No, see, he's totally telling the truth, it's just that Kevin Shields perceives time on a geological- nay, an astronomical scale.

i will have some news to share with you soon!!!

Steve Shasta, Friday, 24 August 2007 17:37 (sixteen years ago) link

well, it's a start...still, '92 was a long time ago, in so many ways...

Yay the news! (Vinita J. co-runs the myspace site and is on the level, known her for a decade now, so i figure something's up.)

Henry S is right, though. Still, we will see.

Ned Raggett, Friday, 24 August 2007 18:13 (sixteen years ago) link

man you guys are suckers

Shakey Mo Collier, Friday, 24 August 2007 18:15 (sixteen years ago) link

All those mid-90s "he's really into jungle" and "he's really into speed metal" rumors created this expectation that if MBV did suddenly return, it'd be with something completely mind-blowing and out-of-nowhere -- an impression his sheer long absence seemed to back up. ("If he's been holed up working on something for this long, it MUST be because it's going to be as next-level amazing as Loveless was!") ... But given the remix work he's done lately, and his general involvement with the same sorts of people and sounds and trends as before, some grand new shift seems less and less likely. And while I wouldn't mind hearing new work or collaborations or whatever that just kinda follow the same path as before, the thought isn't actively exciting, or anything.

reunions suck

Shakey Mo Collier, Friday, 24 August 2007 19:28 (sixteen years ago) link

I'm perfectly happy with him making killer Primal Scream remixes and fiddling around with sdtks or whatever - who needs a filthy lucre-style reunion tour with his pudgy mug playing Do You Realise for 30 minutes yet again

Shakey Mo Collier, Friday, 24 August 2007 19:29 (sixteen years ago) link

I'd be pretty pissed if he played Flaming Lips songs as well.

Ned Raggett, Friday, 24 August 2007 19:30 (sixteen years ago) link

haha sorry You Made Me Realize

Shakey Mo Collier, Friday, 24 August 2007 19:31 (sixteen years ago) link

I'm looking at it like the Velvet Underground reunion (as their dormant period is now about the same amount of time). It's a chance to see them all on the same stage again before they start dying.

everything, Friday, 24 August 2007 19:31 (sixteen years ago) link

it's a better world with *that* guitar and *those* vocals in it...in any form, really...

henry s, Friday, 24 August 2007 19:35 (sixteen years ago) link

didn't VU reunite about 25 years after they split?

henry s, Friday, 24 August 2007 19:36 (sixteen years ago) link

Part of me is still surprised that Bilinda has never had any kind of Beth Gibbon / Hope Sandoval / Martina Topley-Bird type semi-solo collaboration album. I guess the obvious difference is that people aren't all in love with Bilinda's voice in particular, but still.

nabisco, Friday, 24 August 2007 19:39 (sixteen years ago) link

I used to see Colm O'Cloisig around town DJing and whatnot - guess he recently moved to LA.

19 Years. 17 if you include Lou and John's "Songs For Drella".

everything, Friday, 24 August 2007 19:42 (sixteen years ago) link

Actually wiki says they all played together in 1990, so 17 years I guess.

But now some tantalizing hints have emerged in the past few weeks that suggest the band is finally gearing up for a return to action. In July, several fans reported encounters with Shields at Primal Scream and Dinosaur Jr. shows in England, Ireland, and Russia, each returning with the same story: that Shields very matter-of-factly spoke of My Bloody Valentine in the very present tense. The fans reported Shields said that two new My Bloody Valentine releases are in the works – an anthology of unreleased 90s material and an album of brand new studio recordings – along with the imminent release of remastered versions of the band’s original studio work. He is also reported as saying, on several different occasions, that a 2008 tour is in the works that will feature the band’s original lineup. (Read some of the reports here, here, and here.) Furthermore, in an interview published earlier this year in Magnet magazine, Shields was adamant about the band’s return: “We are 100% going to make another My Bloody Valentine record unless we die or something,” he said.

WoW, thanks Mike!

Must... not... get... hopes up.

I'll believe it when my ears are bleeding.

Spencer Chow, Tuesday, 28 August 2007 04:50 (sixteen years ago) link

I'm kicking myself I missed the only tour they did here previously (1991 or 92 I think? Maybe 1990?). I could have gone to 2 diff shows and didnt. Gah! What was I thinking.

Trayce, Tuesday, 28 August 2007 04:55 (sixteen years ago) link

if you are in the US then that tour was in 1992.

Bee OK, Tuesday, 28 August 2007 05:06 (sixteen years ago) link

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 28 August 2007 05:08 (sixteen years ago) link

I was in Aus but it might have been the same tour.
