When I was little we used 'Cute' to mean 'good-looking', as in "Oh my god he is so cute". Sort of like how 'hot' is used now.

Now, if I say a guy is cute, it would be a compliment but not a sexual one. Just one of affection. My boyfriend doesn't accept my 'cute' compliments very often, and I have to change my phrasing to 'ruggedly handsome' or something.

(I suppose the irritating male habit would be to go for it anyway and then turn to an "it's not you, it's me" thing.)

"M'am, I reserve the right to refuse service to anyone. I have not and will not charge you a cent and you're free to take your business elsewhere. I'd rather not call the police, but if you insist on continuing to disturb me, I will. Please leave."

dell, Friday, 29 February 2008 20:30 (sixteen years ago) link

I guess a more serious answer is "Sorry, I have to get up early tomorrow..." My tactic used to be to wait for her to turn the other way and then duck behind random people in the crowd.

HI DERE, Friday, 29 February 2008 20:32 (sixteen years ago) link

dudes who have been around know that the vast majority of women use "cute" and "sweet" to feign affection out of guilt so we ain't fucking buying it. end of story.

El Tomboto, Friday, 29 February 2008 20:35 (sixteen years ago) link

and as with any other negative semantic association it's the word that counts, not your intent

That isn't necessarily true, Tom. I've seen a lot of times where "cute" is used as the safe designator of "wau he's attractive", kind of a placeholder until she gets to know the designated cuteboy and can figure out if he's worth boning.

HI DERE, Friday, 29 February 2008 20:37 (sixteen years ago) link

xp I don't even know who you are.

Laurel, Friday, 29 February 2008 20:38 (sixteen years ago) link

not guilt so much, they just don't wanna hurt your feelings, a compliment's a compliment etc. xposts to tombot

blueski, Friday, 29 February 2008 20:38 (sixteen years ago) link

Oh wait, I can think of a complimentary line that probably has the same effect on some girls: "you're so easy to hang out with" (with or without explicit "it's like hanging out with one of the guys")

xpost - yeah, I think the "that's sweet but go away" thing is a very small subset and I wouldn't kneejerk read that into "cute" at ALL

nabisco, Friday, 29 February 2008 20:39 (sixteen years ago) link

(A lot of men, OTOH, seem to be able to decide a girl is worth boning upon sight and spend the time afterwards trying to figure out if it's worth sticking around to bone again.)

HI DERE, Friday, 29 February 2008 20:39 (sixteen years ago) link

I like being called cute unless I am trying to be not-cute, in which case I make a cute little grumpy face.

wanko ergo sum, Friday, 29 February 2008 20:41 (sixteen years ago) link

another wrinkle is that calling you 'cute' or 'a cute boy' may be totally sincere but indicate maybe the girl is bad news?

gff, Friday, 29 February 2008 20:44 (sixteen years ago) link

People trying to be all authoritative about this are weird. Different girls use cute/sweet in different ways. Sometimes it's a good thing, sometimes not. Generally, I'm happy so long as they're not calling me an asshole.

contenderizer, Friday, 29 February 2008 20:44 (sixteen years ago) link

what if we tell you that you are so adorable we just want to cook you into a pie and feed it to some kittens?

bell_labs, Friday, 29 February 2008 20:44 (sixteen years ago) link

run

Eppy, Friday, 29 February 2008 20:45 (sixteen years ago) link

when used in the 3rd person it's ok. as in, a girl tells me she told her friends she had a date with a "cute" guy. (that's 3rd person, right? i think) anyways that's fine. but if i hear "you're so cute" it puts me right in the same league as her stuffed animals and pets.
preferred terms: attractive, sexy, hawt, stud-pile, hero.

big time xposts! huh!

The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall, Friday, 29 February 2008 20:45 (sixteen years ago) link

I like being called cute if it's sincere!

Curt1s Stephens, Friday, 29 February 2008 20:45 (sixteen years ago) link

and what about the chicks who are all "you're cute, you're like my little brother, i want to bone you"??

gff, Friday, 29 February 2008 20:46 (sixteen years ago) link

What kind of crust does this pie have?

nabisco, Friday, 29 February 2008 20:46 (sixteen years ago) link

yeah what about the cougars who are all like let me at that big cute dong of yours

El Tomboto, Friday, 29 February 2008 20:47 (sixteen years ago) link

then that's creepy!

Curt1s Stephens, Friday, 29 February 2008 20:48 (sixteen years ago) link

I suspect there's a valley between like 12 and 40 where men don't want to be "cute" but that at some point when they've got the world (and possib themselves?) convinced of their own ruggedness and agedness and non-cuteness it becomes legal tender all over again.

Laurel, Friday, 29 February 2008 20:48 (sixteen years ago) link

If Kathleen Turner says "Let me at that big cute dong of yours" to you, I don't know if there is any response more appropriate than "Okay!"

Like I said, just make me a sandwich once in a while.

El Tomboto, Friday, 29 February 2008 20:49 (sixteen years ago) link

Calling a guy cute is like calling a girl handsome. I should try that sometime.

I can't think of something to say after a girl calls me sweet though. ILXors help me out with this one.

I'm gonna start a companion thread called "Do women like being touched?" so we can wind up teasing out the same answers: depends who's doing it, how it's being done, and who the woman in question is, duh

"do a lady enjoy handcuffs"

"why does straights never want to peg"

El Tomboto, Friday, 29 February 2008 20:56 (sixteen years ago) link

dont act like 90% of ilx threads aren't variations on this formula

deej, Friday, 29 February 2008 20:59 (sixteen years ago) link

There are plenty of women who qualify as "handsome", and generally speaking I find them a lot more interesting-looking than the "pretty" ones, so that def has a place.

Laurel, Friday, 29 February 2008 21:02 (sixteen years ago) link

I am a werewolf.

gabbneb, Friday, 29 February 2008 21:02 (sixteen years ago) link

I know, it's just funny that the main way we wind up discussing the details is often in the context of a yes/no question with no answers. A hedged-out questions like "under what circumstances do you not like being called 'cute' and why and c." -- those never quite turn out, for some reason.

nabisco, Friday, 29 February 2008 21:03 (sixteen years ago) link

People like having something to argue about. The simpler, the better.

contenderizer, Friday, 29 February 2008 21:06 (sixteen years ago) link

the important thing is that we solve this issue for roxymuzak. i don't want anyone getting hurt out there.

My wife called me "cute" last night in the middle of a $150 dinner that she was buying and I thought it was great.
