I took the last two years off to work but I will be a freshman at UNC Chapel Hill this fall (assuming I actually get off my ass and send in my deposit before the end of the month).

despite the posts on this thread, I am looking forward to it.

I am starting grad school in August. I am old too.

I don't know what Facebook is and I don't want to know.

admrl, Wednesday, 25 April 2007 20:48 (seventeen years ago) link

Hello, creative writing majors. What a load of shit, right? It's like paying someone lots of money to give you a reading list and say, 'This is it. Oh yeah, you're gonna be great now.' Except a lot of people don't read the books or just aren't cut out for brooding and flimsy deadlines. So it isn't that good.

max, Wednesday, 25 April 2007 23:39 (seventeen years ago) link

Curt1s Stephens, Wednesday, 25 April 2007 23:40 (seventeen years ago) link

Good catch-all = poly sci/government.

HI DERE, Wednesday, 25 April 2007 23:40 (seventeen years ago) link

guyz my thesis is going to be trying to prove my hypothesis that tree species most stunted by a climatologically-anomalous two-day early April freeze in Northwest Arkansas this year have a more southerly mean geographic range and are therefore less acclimated to freezes than the ones that survived. It's kinda conceptually simple but I will be analyzing remotely-sensed differential NDVI datasets to identify areas the most and least stunted by the freeze (NDVI indicates healthy vegetative intensity -- patches of stunted trees will appear darker in a high-resolution satellite NDVI image), georectify these images to a map projection, delineate these areas on a GPS device, go and identify the species, consult with botanists or probably some other grad students from the ag/bio department who want to work on something similar, and then use GIS to do some extremely unpleasant spatial analysis of the ranges of the tree species in question. Ultimately it could be used to map what areas of forest are most suspectible to wild climatic fluctuations (which, of course, there will be more of).

but that's the next two semesters. for now I have to worry about finishing 3 projects before next Thursday.

"American Studies" is the catchall in my area.

I've got two papers due in 18 hours.

I have not started either.

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Thursday, 26 April 2007 00:18 (seventeen years ago) link

better catch-all major: history or English?

I'm a liberal studies major.

Casuistry, Thursday, 26 April 2007 00:18 (seventeen years ago) link

Mostly because pretty much every department/field of study pisses me off (except maybe Math) (I am probably going to be a Math minor just to keep my blood pressure down).

Casuistry, Thursday, 26 April 2007 00:20 (seventeen years ago) link

hey adam are you going to grad school in the bay??

moonship journey to baja, Thursday, 26 April 2007 00:21 (seventeen years ago) link

xp american studies is some bullshit

max, Thursday, 26 April 2007 00:22 (seventeen years ago) link

pfff american studies is a tight as hell major, what other major allows you to delve so deeply into the world of amish quilts?

iiiijjjj, Thursday, 26 April 2007 00:27 (seventeen years ago) link

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Thursday, 26 April 2007 00:28 (seventeen years ago) link

I wanted to major in Pop Culture at Bowling Green. But that would have involved living in Kentucky.

milo z, Thursday, 26 April 2007 00:28 (seventeen years ago) link

Addressing everyone:

How are the concerts that your programming board puts on? Because ours fucking SUCK. We have, like, ONE concert a year, and it's this big festival right before finals week (called RutgersFest, originally enough) and this year they have Hawthorne Heights (eew), The Roots (cool), and.... wait for it... Everclear. Last year it was Ginuwine, Common, and OK GO.

: |

And it's funny, coz OK GO really doens't have a big fan base... all the indie kids think they're dumb and stupid and all the other kids don't even really know who they are (this was before the treadmill video, but does it really make a difference?). At least get someone with FANS, jeez.

And then when I went down to FL for spring break, my friends and I went to the bowling alley in the student union ant FSU, and they had posters for fuckin like of Montreal and The Decemberists and DIPLO!! DIPLO! (well technically Diplo was at an immediately local venue, but FREE ADMISSION w/ a student ID, wtf). So yeah I'm really mad we never ever get good bands ever.

Stevie D, Thursday, 26 April 2007 17:03 (seventeen years ago) link

Also while correcting myself I committed the atrocious act of COMMA SPLICING.

Curt1s Stephens, Thursday, 26 April 2007 17:38 (seventeen years ago) link

ILX has made the comma splice seem more natural than forming actual compound sentences.

Curt1s Stephens, Thursday, 26 April 2007 17:38 (seventeen years ago) link

hahaha otm

university concert festival packages now always remind me of when Penn State (I think it was Penn State) booked Sonic Youth to headline theirs three years ago, and there was this student newspaper article about how all the freshmen they interviewed hadn't heard of them before and were complaining like "yeah I just think we pay good money to be here, maybe they could have bothered to get a band we've heard of you know?" and the article called them "underground punk" or something and it was just a total ROFLBROTHEL

iiiijjjj, Thursday, 26 April 2007 17:57 (seventeen years ago) link

GA Tech booked T.I. but I missed it ;_;

http://media.www.dailypennsylvanian.com/media/storage/paper882/news/2005/03/18/News/Some-Express.Discontent.With.Acts-2148697.shtml

College freshman Rachel Aresty, a member of the online group, said she has never heard of Sonic Youth, a group which opened for artist George Clinton at the 1995 Spring Fling concert.

"This is our first year at Penn; I feel like it's all hyped up," Aresty said. "Cornell has Snoop Dogg -- why can't we get someone good like that?"

iiiijjjj, Thursday, 26 April 2007 18:01 (seventeen years ago) link

There's just so much wrong with what she said.

Oh well - we have the Wrens and Sondre Lerche. That's fine by me!

Nathan, Thursday, 26 April 2007 18:08 (seventeen years ago) link

I wanted to major in Pop Culture at Bowling Green. But that would have involved living in Kentucky.

Hell of a long commute when the school is in northwestern Ohio.

jaymc, Thursday, 26 April 2007 18:10 (seventeen years ago) link

I went to a small liberal arts school in Michigan. The only bands that came to our school were a couple Christian-rock bands I'd never heard of booked by the organization of Christian students. People talked fondly of when Ani DiFranco had graced the campus with her presence in like 1994.

jaymc, Thursday, 26 April 2007 18:12 (seventeen years ago) link

pretty much the year after i left someone started Frid4y Night R0ck Club, which booked small indie bands and had FREE KEGS paid for by the college.

those fucks.
