Go to the boring computer questions thread Ally and maybe follow what Piuma had to go through. Hopefully you won't have so many troubles.

Bryan (Bryan), Thursday, 12 February 2004 18:05 (twenty years ago) link

By "the commands" that I "put in" "there", I mean this one:

/sw/bin/python2.3 /sw/bin/nicotine

Which is supposed to open the program, but I think I have to type it in this "X11" thing.

xpost i didn't see that thread? I'll search on it. I'm just wondering if "X11" and "XDarwin" are the same thing.

Elvis Telecom knows his sh*t with regards to this.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 12 February 2004 18:23 (twenty years ago) link

Got it to work

Uh how do I actually download anything now?

Allyzay, Thursday, 12 February 2004 18:29 (twenty years ago) link

Anyone find it harder to get fast transfers with slsk than napster?

788, Thursday, 12 February 2004 18:56 (twenty years ago) link

Ally: click on the 'file search' button up top, type a name and hit return. Wait a bit for results to come back in (black means it's available right now), pick one, it appears in 'Transfers' window.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Thursday, 12 February 2004 19:00 (twenty years ago) link

Also woohoo new computer + phone extension cable from two moves ago = first sweet sweet file theft in 2.5 years last night!

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Thursday, 12 February 2004 19:01 (twenty years ago) link

I've been SoulSeek Classic on os 9 quite a bit lately. It works better then I originally gave it credit for, especially for the less popular stuff.

bnw (bnw), Thursday, 12 February 2004 19:03 (twenty years ago) link

you have to connect, Ally. Which is under the "file" menu. Also, I think the default server in nicotine is wrong so you have to type something else in there (server.slsk.org:2240 instead of mail.slsk, which is what was in there when I installed it).

anthony kyle monday (akmonday), Thursday, 12 February 2004 19:03 (twenty years ago) link

haha yes akm's advice is probably a good idea as well.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Thursday, 12 February 2004 19:04 (twenty years ago) link

It's fucked for me.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Thursday, 12 February 2004 20:03 (twenty years ago) link

what happened?

anthony kyle monday (akmonday), Thursday, 12 February 2004 20:06 (twenty years ago) link

No no I was connected and doing searches fine, I couldn't figure out how to actually select a track and download it. Apparently I have to highlight it, option-click it, hold down option-click, scroll down to "Download File(s)" and then it will download files. Which seems really awkward and retarded to me but I got used to it pretty quickly. I know on the PC I was able to just highlight and hit enter, and on Kazaa it is supa eazy. Apparently no one is interested in trading files with Mac users or something, judging by how complicated and stupid this all was but Elvis is right about the character building and the sense of real accomplishment.

What does it mean that some files are grey and some files are black? My username is Allyzay and I think I left it on so y'all can go steal the entire contents of my computer if you want.

Allyzay, Thursday, 12 February 2004 23:01 (twenty years ago) link

Gray means there's a queue for the file, black means it's open.

Buy privileges, it's well worth the $5 to get bumped to the head of the queue.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Thursday, 12 February 2004 23:03 (twenty years ago) link

Do you get like more "points" the more people download from you, like Kazaa? I Never really used slsk before because I hated the interface and it wasn't working right on my old computer. I honestly don't quite understand their settings for uploading/downloading.

I'm also having a hard time telling if I'm actually toggled "away" too.

Allyzay, Thursday, 12 February 2004 23:07 (twenty years ago) link

batwings OPEN = on/online
batwings closed = away

mine are always messed up

"oh, they like polish folk music AND cumguzzlingteensluts.jpg's"

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 12 February 2004 23:10 (twenty years ago) link

what's the difference?

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 12 February 2004 23:20 (twenty years ago) link

about 75lbs

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 12 February 2004 23:22 (twenty years ago) link

What does it mean when Nicotine keeps asking you to reset your shared folder at startup? Mine does this, and then just keeps "listening on port 2234", but nothing happens.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Friday, 13 February 2004 01:54 (twenty years ago) link

I got it I got it!

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Friday, 13 February 2004 01:57 (twenty years ago) link

I wish Jess was talking about my computer but I haven't had a chance to download any porn yet onto my new computer what with all the jackass bullshit trying to get MP3s :( :( :(

Allyzay, Friday, 13 February 2004 01:57 (twenty years ago) link

I think it's pretty obvious who he's talking about...

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Friday, 13 February 2004 02:09 (twenty years ago) link

Yeah, I was thinking of Matos too.

Allyzay, Friday, 13 February 2004 02:10 (twenty years ago) link

It was the Polish folk music that gave it away.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Friday, 13 February 2004 02:12 (twenty years ago) link

is there like some kind of slsk etiquette that I am unaware of? Some dude just told me off for trying to download ONE song and then banned me!!! I was all like wo.

Allyzay, Friday, 13 February 2004 03:14 (twenty years ago) link

Hah you are me two weeks ago! When the guy I am getting Six Feet Under episodes off threatened to ban me, I was terrified!

Most people like you to keep it to one or two albums or one large (avi or mpeg)file.

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Friday, 13 February 2004 03:18 (twenty years ago) link

Although s1utsky told me it was "a free for all".

@d@ml (nordicskilla), Friday, 13 February 2004 03:19 (twenty years ago) link

After-midnight US is a free-for-all. You find someone with a 100+ transfer speed to you and lots of stuff, then just go to town. I set a bunch of stuff to download one night and woke up with 2GB of MP3s. (I'm staying away from Slsk because I have about 2000 MP3s I haven't even tried to listen to.)

I've given up on getting Slsk to work on my Mac, I'm just going to pirate Virtua*PC and run it that way. If they can get it working this way, how come no one's been able to just do a nice easy Carbon version?

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Friday, 13 February 2004 03:26 (twenty years ago) link

Ally, the guy could've got all pissy if you don't have anything shared yet. Once you've got a bunch of MP3s in there it'll be okay.

Dan I., Friday, 13 February 2004 03:31 (twenty years ago) link

dude my whole computer is shared, people are downloading off me left and right, it's all good. And it was seriously only one 3 min song!! I think duude was just nuts, that's all. Haha he's probably an ilxor.

Allyzay, Friday, 13 February 2004 03:43 (twenty years ago) link

how come no one's been able to just do a nice easy Carbon version?

You mean Cocoa.

Elvis Telecom (Chris Barrus), Friday, 13 February 2004 04:52 (twenty years ago) link

What does it mean when Nicotine keeps asking you to reset your shared folder at startup?

See the "Fix the Too Many Open Files bug" section of this page: http://niij.org/macusers

Elvis Telecom (Chris Barrus), Friday, 13 February 2004 04:58 (twenty years ago) link

Also make sure you've upgraded to the latest 1.0.7 release of Nicotine and that you're not still using the 1.0.7rc2 one.

Elvis Telecom (Chris Barrus), Friday, 13 February 2004 04:59 (twenty years ago) link

okay soulseek classic is awesome! it didn't let me change my username coz the prfes kept getting corrupted (running it on 8.6) so i went in with a hex editor and hacked the default!

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Friday, 13 February 2004 07:27 (twenty years ago) link

is it wrong and evul to be on slsk but only share stuff to your friends?

g-kit (g-kit), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 12:36 (twenty years ago) link

no

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 12:50 (twenty years ago) link

that's what i figured, but people keep telling me otherwise.
even my friends.
i'm sticking to my guns though, even after being banned by someone the other day. i was only DLing 2 files, so i asked why he banned me and he said simply "you're not sharing, why else would i ban someone?"
i said "if i share, would you unban me?"
he was like "if you have anything decent shared, yes"
i was all, "what counts as decent? stuff that YOU like?"
he was like "yep"
so i was all, "isn't that attitude just as bad as not sharing anyway?"
he was like "piss off"

g-kit (g-kit), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 12:53 (twenty years ago) link

in a year i think one person has downloaded from me. and i share, but only shit.

Chris 'The Velvet Bingo' V (Chris V), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 13:03 (twenty years ago) link

I get banned for being on dial-up. So I get their IP and give it to the RIAA.

don (don), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 13:09 (twenty years ago) link

Nicotine's a fine little program, it is.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 12 May 2004 13:26 (twenty years ago) link

I never have the heart to ban anyone, but I did rename a directory when someone with a d/l speed of 0.1 tried to download a sex and the city episode off of me.
