finally found the Crazy Cousinz release and it is hella nice

The OneDrop mix bumps obviously - love the unexpected experience of the Ripgroove sample durin Bringing It Down.

Maybe it's just the overload of MC's on this one but it feels like virtually every record here references two or three others, like they're trying to reach some kind of critical mass of whoops of recognition. Route one funky!

mak10 kinda killing it right now on rinse... i think i heard some new rapid-produced track that was really good, in spite of the rolex sweep-style 'sexy' vocals.

titchy (titchyschneiderMk2), Wednesday, 1 July 2009 19:54 (fourteen years ago) link

I haven't heard the above yet but I'm loving his 24 June set for Rinse (under Marcus Nasty - Mak 10 does the first hour then Marcus the second). Very ruff!

Marcus plays this vocal tune "Cookin" by Enrique Benitez (not sure if that's correct) which strikes me as exactly what vocal tunes should be aiming for right now: sassy r&b vocals over a spiky groove that could be from Scotty D, all sharp snares, menacing bass and chilly synth sounds.

The vocal goes "I see you lookin' lookin'/(at) what i've been cookin' cookin'/I wanna take it slow/Watch you go down low..."

Tim F, Wednesday, 1 July 2009 22:52 (fourteen years ago) link

the one i like - god knows if its out now, ive stopped keeping track of the 12s as i cant afford to be tempted right now - is the one with the girl talking (very emphatically) about 'i just wanna do you right!' still like that older one 'i dont give a fuck about she'. the new princess one 'big boys' is good for LOLz but its not really on par with frontline. not sure what other good vocals ive heard, except for the fuzzy logik one thats apparently delayed til autumn now cos some major snapped it up.

titchy (titchyschneiderMk2), Wednesday, 1 July 2009 23:00 (fourteen years ago) link

mak 10 played some DIRTY hard house sounding stuff tonight... sounded brilliant in the car, even better with poor reception lol.

titchy (titchyschneiderMk2), Wednesday, 1 July 2009 23:01 (fourteen years ago) link

Just now listening to Roska's June 30th set on Rinse and it's great. I don't know what 90 percent of this stuff is though. The song around 9 minutes is killer.

mr. anephric (the anephric project), Wednesday, 1 July 2009 23:19 (fourteen years ago) link

Titchy, the "Do You Right" tune is definitely a Crazy Cousinz remix but I can't remember what the original track is. The "I don't give a..." tune is Yazz's "You, Me & She", probably the DJ Naughty remix.

Yeah "Big Boys" is a bit sub-par. A shame because Ill Blu (who I assume produced it as per "Frontline") is totally smashing it lately. To whit:

Ill Blu - Time To Get Nasty
Shystie - Pull It (Ill Blu Remix)
Kris Bayer - Heartbreaker (Ill Blu Remix)
Aaliyah - Rock The Boat (Ill Blu Remix)

Between these four tunes he's definitely in the running to be producer of the year-so-far.

i was also gonna add the ill blu remix of mj cole's 'gotta have it' but the thought of ill blu/aaliyah has fused my brain a bit

lex pretend, Thursday, 2 July 2009 00:47 (fourteen years ago) link

"Rider" is good (as is "Say Yes") but I'd say they're second tier compared to the tracks I listed above. Haven't heard the MJ Cole remix...

Lex, the Ill Blu remix of Aaliyah is all over recent Mak 10/Marcus Nasty sets. Download their June 24 set off the rinse fm blog.

It's great, not as muscular as some of his other productions but very dark and mysterious.

Having real trouble finalising my Top 50 funky tracks for first half of 2009 - the actual shortlist of tracks I lik eand know the name of blows out to about 100, but no way am I gonna do a write-up for all of those.

Tim F, Thursday, 2 July 2009 02:09 (fourteen years ago) link

thanks Tim! LOVE Emvee - "Love Charm"

Paul, Thursday, 2 July 2009 03:12 (fourteen years ago) link

When I do my big round up I might - MIGHT - be able to offer some exclusive links for special friends. Although it's odd hearing "Love Charm" without Shantie saying "one-two!"

Tim F, Thursday, 2 July 2009 03:33 (fourteen years ago) link

i still love that ny/wookie track even though its old now. but then i still play do you mind like its just come out too. would love to hear that alliyah remix - i think i heard it once, rankin said something like 'you cant go wrong with aaliyah' but i duno which set its on.

titchy (titchyschneiderMk2), Thursday, 2 July 2009 22:55 (fourteen years ago) link

Wookie/Ny's "Fallin" is such a classic though, it never sounds tired. Unlike, say, DJ Q's "Your Girl", which I used to like but now could happily never hear again.

On the 24th June set Rankin' says (over the top of "You, Me & She") something, "And a girl asked me why funky house tunes are EMOTIONAL. I dunno, y'know. It's like you ladies got a lotta ISSUES that you gotta get off your chest, innit. So just put it on vinyl!"

I strongly get the impression that he much prefers the vocal tunes to the harder instrumental number, even if they leave less space for him to MC (but then he's only got about six raps anyway...).

Tim F, Thursday, 2 July 2009 23:03 (fourteen years ago) link

ha. a while ago when marcus stopped in the morning, rankin sounded like he almost wanted to go and knock one off as he he was talking about 'I JUST WANNA SEE HER FACE!' hes very much a ladies man, almost to a slightly creepy/sleazy degree lol. and then theres his (now strangely classic?) 'you make my boy hard like rock' verse...

titchy (titchyschneiderMk2), Friday, 3 July 2009 12:32 (fourteen years ago) link

0:05:02 - T2 - Butterflies (Arms Remix) - I THINK, NOT SURE

still loving this - also Ear Dis 'Sexiboogie' (i like to pretend it's Craig David turned good)

Hard House SugBanton (blueski), Friday, 3 July 2009 12:35 (fourteen years ago) link

The "you make my boy hard like rock" rap is definitely one of his better ones, though he oveuses it. Love the "thinkin' bout you gives me writer's block/a credit crunch couldn't touch our stock" bit.

Tim F, Friday, 3 July 2009 16:52 (fourteen years ago) link

whats that funky song about how there are too many guys & there need to be more girls??

what a stupid concept for a song. one in a long lineage of weird british dance songs w/ concepts that are about things that no one of either gender wants to envision while they're actually on a dancefloor cf "movin too fast"

zzz (deej), Friday, 3 July 2009 23:48 (fourteen years ago) link

Boy Better Know - Too Many Man

I suspect that whatever its stated intention it actually has the opposite effect really.

I think you're wrong about "Moving Too Fast" though deej, the words/body split encouraged by "Moving Too Fast" (flirting physically while singing along to a song telling the other person to fuck off) is Dancefloor 101.

i hate too many man. everyone on there sounds desperate to make an anthem, wiley sounds bored, fuck knows what scratchys doing on there, and i dont think ive heard it played by many funky djs either (though i could be wrong). its too grimey. doesnt sound right.

titchy (titchyschneiderMk2), Saturday, 4 July 2009 10:31 (fourteen years ago) link

i've heard it out quite a lot. it's not amazing but it works well in most sets, it's pretty malleable and you can ~repurpose~ it to your own ends.

lex pretend, Saturday, 4 July 2009 10:48 (fourteen years ago) link

Is the grime-orchestral backing ripped from "Are You Really From The Ends"? They should so revive the VIP mix of that as a funky track.

Tim F, Saturday, 4 July 2009 11:05 (fourteen years ago) link

i kind of assumed the whole song was a jump-off from that track...

I want to draw special attention to Mighty Moe's "Ride Again", which I haven't discussed in this thread:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dmdbYnwjT0Y

1) Welcome home Mighty Moe! I've missed you since yr amazing verse on Static's "Charge". I love your total indifference to the notion of actually saying much at all.

2) That beat! Compare and contrast with my comments way at the top of this thread - "I like that the genre is increasingly coalescing around that post "Cure & The Cause" sound but with a stronger Carribean influence - I'm hoping it becomes even more syncopated." Look how far we've come! This is like "Mash Up Da Venue" headwrecking business.

3) The stabbing piano chords. I feel like funky is just doing so much great community work under the heading "promotion of the public benefit of piano".
