my fav thing about the debate was when Joe Biden said "Bush"

You mean the repetition of "the same as Bush's"? It had a nice cadence.

this debate turned into a non-event thanks in great part to ifill, who let the participants (and particularly palin) get away with basically whatever they felt like getting away with. palin announced at the outset that she wasn't going to answer the questions, and ifill utterly capitulated. i'm just fucking aghast at the fact that this is possible. i know politicians will seek to avoid answering questions if it suits them, but for fuck's sake, i thought one of the minimal duties of a moderator is to at least put up some challenge, on behalf of the electorate, who after all, is supposed to become more informed via these debates. FFS at least have the decency to pretend like you will try to enforce the basic rules of the contest.

i'm sure it'll be mentioned that ifill was overcompensating for the "Age of Obama"-related conflict of interest charge, but sorry, that's not enough for me.

Biden was great tonight, btw.

wow, when it became clear that my drinking game rules weren't gonna fuck me up fast enough me and my buddy added "deregulation" "nukular" and "maverick" to the list of drink words. at the end there when palin and biden were both spouting off "maverick" every other sentence i was pounding away my beer so fast that i was just chugging straight foam, which of course resulted in the projectile vomiting of said foam (luckily i was quick enough to make it to the toilet).

one of the strongest of Biden's lines which he treated like a throwaway is that mccain's position is behind the curve given recent bush-maliki talks (whether that's true or not it would stick if they say it, like, again.)

Why are the CNN clips out of order? Makes it looks like Palin got a nifty zing in, when actually Biden had disproved her statement twice, once forcefully, but she kept hammering at the point like... a hammer. A bag of hammers, I guess.

IFILL: Would you like to have an opportunity to answer that before we move on?

PALIN: I’m still on the tax thing because I want to correct you on that again. And I want to let you know what I did as a mayor and as a governor. And I may not answer the questions that either the moderator or you want to hear, but I’m going to talk straight to the American people and let them know my track record also.

gnnnnghhh

I haven't read any of the commentary yet, but it strikes me now that her "I don't have to answer questions from the moderator, or answer questions from you [Biden], I only have a responsibility to talk to the American people [*wink*]" thing was her (pre-scripted) attempt at Ferraro's "don't condescend to me, Bush" moment.

Looooooooooooooooool at TV commentators falling all over themselves to congratulate Palin for holding her own last night. Bullshit - these sissies just don't wanna be accused of sexism ala Hillary.

Biden was ON-POINT. His closing statement bodyslammed Palin's by laying things out clear and being non-partisan. I need a transcript of that.
