Ensemble Al-Umayri: The Sawt of Kuwait

Clapping used really distinctively throughout the Gulf states. Slightly similar to flamenco or to some things I've heard from Mauritania or from various Saharan groups, but I think this use of clapping is more interesting. Quick, complex, rhythms clapped out, sort of as a chorus after verses. I would like even more of it in each song though.

'Bargain' by the Who (1971) has a nice use of handclaps - two closely spaced pairs, recurring every 8 bars (I think) during the verses only.

On a more contemporary note, I've noticed that a lot of r&b and hip hop records at the moment seem to have totally dispensed with a snare drum and have a big, fat, crisp 808-style handclap instead (ie in place of the snare, not mixed in with it). I like the sound of that.
