Hewitt is tickled:

After the wave of assaults on her , Sarah Palin shows the nation why John McCain picked her and why the center-right loves her. She has a great night. Joe Biden does well too, but this was all about Sarah Palin, and she delivered a strong, strong message of energy and change.

The one great line of the debate: "It is so obvious that I am a Washington outsider," Palin says, "soemone just not used to the way you guys operate" as she points out Joe Biden's attempt to doubletalk his way to Obama's position.

9:37 CDT: [Nate] I think this one is likely to go to Biden in the post-debate polling, and perhaps by a fair margin. The expectations game is much more important for the media than for the public, and for a lot of people, she's going to come across as too scripted, come across way too close to the SNL caricature.

joe 40oz (deej), Friday, 3 October 2008 02:57 (fifteen years ago) link

in the sense that they were being measured against expectation, Palin at least halfway overperformed, mostly on style (camera-focus and energy level positives; looking like a deer in headlights, speaking gibberish and explicitly running away from questions), and Biden at least slightly underperformed (in not being Vice Presidential or tough or sunny - in the early rounds - enough). and especially in the sense that this was all about Palin, she may therefore have won.

however, on a level playing field, we saw one relaxed, if slightly tired-looking, candidate who clearly knew what he was talking about and is ready to do the job, and one candidate whose nerves showed through moments of confidence and clearly knew little about the issues or the job to anyone able to discern such things.

so on style/expectations, Palin may have pulled a minor win and might help McCain a tiny bit before the next debate. but I don't think people gave her much of a handicap, and I don't think she convinced many people she's much prepared for the job. so while it wasn't the epic fail we all hoped for, Sarah Palin still = Fail.

Surmounter, Friday, 3 October 2008 03:15 (fifteen years ago) link

I thought she did ok when she was off script, in the segment on foreign policy, when she attacked Biden on his disagreements with Obama on Iraq. o/w she was non-responsive to questions. Biden seemed fine, killed it a couple of times, hung in there the rest of the time.

It was mostly about McCain: that was Biden's goal, and he stuck to it; and Palin seemed to have the same goal. Obama came up a lot at first, less so as the debate wen ton. Biden seemed to make a point of not responding to Palin's views, but to McCain's views, making sure the focus stayed on McCain rather than Palin.

palin did well, but only in not blanking out/no embarrassing silences, etc. it was impressive enough that she was at that level of coherence, but it precluded any actual attacks; it's like last week, when obama attacked mccain and mccain attacked bush - it was only biden that got to really lay into them on the basis of records. i think the dems probably won the news cycle thing; biden looked shifty throughout, but when he'd go for the camera he was bold, spoke with gravitas, etc.

i still can't believe that she raised the 'you're pointing at the past' thing twice without getting pulled up on it/allowing venerable biden to dispatch lofty condemned-to-repeat-itself cliches. biden WIN for courting undecideds with his fluency, palin SECOND PLACE PRIZE for doing her base proud.

no women's rights questions though, despite roe/wade and biden mentioning introducing the act he wrote: disappointing.
