he's probably just busy playing God of War right now ;)

I won't have such aspersions cast about me!

I wasn't really planning on running any polls (though kind of musing about voting in a Cat Power one), but if the people want one, who am I to argue? I also don't want to lay sole claim to running a shorties poll, so if anyone has a burning desire, I'm happy to give them the responsibility. If not, I can still run it, though would welcome help with graphics.

Bumping for the US day crowd.

A few good Young Marble Giants options too, hmmm

jmm, Wednesday, 13 February 2019 19:09 (five years ago) link

Hey leee, this is weird but I guess I have a burning desire to do it. I enjoy the process and I’ve never ran an entire one myself!

Hey Leee! Whoops, lol

Karl Malone, Wednesday, 13 February 2019 19:13 (five years ago) link

Notice I changed “guess” to “suppose”

It’s hard out here on ILX

Karl Malone, Wednesday, 13 February 2019 19:13 (five years ago) link

Kool Karl! Giving you the krown. I'm not too picky about < 2:00 or <= 2:00.

Also, two computers ago I had a collating/point totaling script, I might try to rewrite it if you need it.

A Grape Ape Agape (Leee), Wednesday, 13 February 2019 19:41 (five years ago) link

And let me know if you need help with anything else!

A Grape Ape Agape (Leee), Wednesday, 13 February 2019 19:47 (five years ago) link

Will do, thanks!

To everyone else - I will set up a nominations thread this week, probably within the next couple days. Now that I have the ultimate power, I am going to use it to declare that the poll will be for songs that are less than two minutes long. 2:00 is unacceptable. 1:59.99999 is not only acceptable, it's recommended.

Karl Malone, Wednesday, 13 February 2019 20:13 (five years ago) link

maybe run a side poll for songs that are exactly 2 minutes long, too. if anyone has any other ideas for fun side polls, lemme know and i'll include it in the authoritative OP for the nominations thread

Karl Malone, Wednesday, 13 February 2019 20:15 (five years ago) link

great poll idea, i am looking forward to it! less than 120 seconds is perfect.

Ich bin kein Berliner (alex in mainhattan), Wednesday, 13 February 2019 20:45 (five years ago) link

Finally, the Minutemen/Naked City/Conet Project ballot I've always wanted to cast.

ILX Moderator: It's Like a Pressure Wash for Your Insides (WmC), Wednesday, 13 February 2019 22:14 (five years ago) link

I'm going to make it my mission to bombard Karl Malone with provocative questions that require difficult, potentially controversial decisions.

What is the final say on a song's length? Buddy Holly's "Looking for Someone to Love" is 1:56 on Wikipedia, 1:57/1:58/2:00 on Spotify (not sure if all three are the same version), 1:59 on two of my media players and 2:00 on the other (same file for all three). In or out?

clemenza, Wednesday, 13 February 2019 23:45 (five years ago) link

i am tempted to resort to the answers provided by my manual of absolute power and corruption, vol 3, page 159, "Disputed Song Lengths", which reads:

"yea, if at least one authoritative source that is never wrong, such as wikipedia, lists the official time as less than 2:00, the song is deemed "pretty short, arguably" and is thus eligible for the poll. but in general, let it be known that it is not cool to "game the system" or "be a jerk about things" by pointing to some outlier bogus source just to get a song to qualify in an internet poll. please, please, don't do that."

however: 1) we should save this discussion for the nominations thread, where it's going to happen again no matter what happens here, and 2) if someone has a great idea for how to resolve this issue in the least complicated way, i'm all ears.

Karl Malone, Thursday, 14 February 2019 00:05 (five years ago) link

yay, on board with another Karl Malone poll. so looking forward to this.

and Hi, fellow SF Giants fan Leee. haven't seen you in the same thread that i seem to be posting on.

Bee OK, Thursday, 14 February 2019 00:13 (five years ago) link

thanks bee! and yeah, it should be fun. i'll hold off on the nominations thread until this weekend so as to not interfere with the 2018 metal n' heavy rock voting deadline

Karl Malone, Thursday, 14 February 2019 02:03 (five years ago) link

hell yeah km this gonna be fun and edifying

budo jeru, Thursday, 14 February 2019 05:09 (five years ago) link

how are we doing karl, i'm ready to salute some minuscule masterpieces

we're far from the challops now (voodoo chili), Monday, 18 February 2019 15:57 (five years ago) link

You'll probably have to issue many deadline reminders, continually re-explain the rules, etc.--everyone participating will have very short attention spans.

clemenza, Monday, 18 February 2019 16:22 (five years ago) link

i'm gonna post the nominations thread tonight! i will drunkenly remind everyone every 00:01:59 or less

♫ Your NOMINATIONS for the best songs under 2 minutes poll ♫

Karl Malone, Tuesday, 19 February 2019 02:07 (five years ago) link

the 2 minute songs poll and the jazz album poll revive made me wonder whether there had ever been a motown albums poll. like motown / tamla / gordy etc.

just throwing the idea out there.

listened to the supremes’ “we remember sam cooke” today and boy did it sound good

budo jeru, Tuesday, 19 February 2019 03:55 (five years ago) link

have we ever done a duets poll? i think that would be cool

Mordy, Tuesday, 26 February 2019 22:01 (five years ago) link

Albums, no. Singles/tracks, yes.

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 27 February 2019 04:49 (five years ago) link

C. Grisso, would you object if I asked for the Bacharach Songbook poll back? I'd like to see that one happen.

27 Discounts ILXors Get Only If They Know (WmC), Wednesday, 6 March 2019 20:34 (five years ago) link

love that WilliamC is getting back into the game.

Bee OK, Thursday, 7 March 2019 05:27 (five years ago) link

XP. Yeah, go ahead. It's seems like any time I get open to do something with it, another poll is already in full swing, or something else comes up at home.

Cool, thanks. Is anything coming up after Karl's >2:00 poll?

27 Discounts ILXors Get Only If They Know (WmC), Thursday, 7 March 2019 15:55 (five years ago) link

two weeks pass...

Would there be interest in a Gordon Lightfoot poll? I would be happy to run one at some point if so, not sure what the order of things is right now.

Will (kruezer2), Monday, 25 March 2019 19:18 (five years ago) link

Has Scott Walker never been done? Sorry, can't search on Flagging app.

mfktz (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Monday, 25 March 2019 19:30 (five years ago) link

Nope, was suggested but never followed up.

Dan Worsley, Monday, 25 March 2019 20:50 (five years ago) link

I only got into Gord last year, so I can't say I'm familiar enough with his entire discography to participate in a poll. I spent almost my whole life just thinking he was an unremarkable one-hit wonder who sang about the Edmund Fitzgerald.

Johnny Fever, Monday, 25 March 2019 21:39 (five years ago) link

Would vote for Gord. But I’m guessing single-digit returns.

Una Palooka Dronka (hardcore dilettante), Tuesday, 26 March 2019 00:50 (five years ago) link

yeah, probably not worth it for a small return, maybe I'll start a thread to listen thru his discography instead.

Will (kruezer2), Wednesday, 27 March 2019 14:25 (five years ago) link

Would participate. Song by song would be rad, but album by album is probably more realistic. I am just about to embark on a chronological Gord listening binge, so nice timing!

Una Palooka Dronka (hardcore dilettante), Wednesday, 27 March 2019 22:47 (five years ago) link

I'd totally listen along myself. Been forever meaning to get beyond my scratchy old Best Of LP.

Nag! Nag! Nag!, Wednesday, 27 March 2019 23:20 (five years ago) link

After < 2 minutes finishes, I propose the final installment of the triad: BEST SONGS BETWEEN 3 AND 5 MINUTES.

LEOPLOD BLOOMPS (Leee), Monday, 1 April 2019 21:27 (five years ago) link

nah we gotta do songs between 8 and 10 mins

Neus Anneus (voodoo chili), Monday, 1 April 2019 21:30 (five years ago) link

I would totally Gord out with yall

frogbs, Monday, 1 April 2019 21:31 (five years ago) link

xp I'd be up for that. I'm still REELING from finding the +10-minute not-epic thread and getting cross with all the tracks that almost made my playlist but not quite.
