I've never watched this despite being curious bc of the Scharpling connection, but I found out last week that the head writer is a guy I went to high school with.

yeah i was referring to l@mar @brams. we weren't friends or anything but were both on the AP track and so we had a lot of classes together. i do remember him drawing a lot of anime (very well) in class.

Yeah, this season finale was fantastic - they threw so much stuff into it, but it all worked beautifully. I'm not sure I really agree with certain characters being "befriended" really, but that is in line with the series' ethos, so fair enough. S5 was a lot better than S4 overall, too.
Man, Obsidian making that sword was so freakin' awesome! And James Baxter animated the Pink Steven sequence.

Fantastic, long interview about Sugar's influences, the making of the movie and her generally lovely positivity about animation.

anyone else watch the movie yet?
spoilers in my thoughts below.
i had mixed feelings about it. i found spinel pretty grating as a character and it was frustrating to not have the "real" crystal gems around for most of the movie (though the reset pearl and amethyst were funny) and for the residents of beach city to not really be in it at all. on the other hand, i loved the message of there being no happy endings and that we all just continue to change and grow, and there were some good songs (predictably, my favorite was the ted leo song). and i loved the friendly (but somehow still threatening) diamonds, especially white diamond, who has maybe my favorite character design in the show. and spinel's back story was convincingly sad.

I loved Spinel, her animation alone was worth the tripalso STEG

caught up on the series, the movie, and most of what's aired of SUF. As much as I hate to admit it, the more traditional Big Bad denouement of the "closing run" of Adventure Time (I guess they're making more now?) was considerably more emotional and satisfying to me than the end of s5 of Steven Universe. In general SU is clearly the more laudable and original but less entertaining series, and its "resolutions by friendship" got very repetitive, even if much more of AT is skippable. I guess she shows up this week but the lack of Connie in SFU has been a real bummer so far as well. SFU also kind of bugs me at times for being so transparently a response to criticisms/shortcomings of the series/Steven as a character. There's nothing wrong with that, but I feel like I can see the gears turning a lot and it kinda suffers as an entertainment as a result.
mind you if I had a kid I would definitely force them to watch this lol

the limited number of episodes means basically every beloved character other than steven gets short shrift. it's nice that there's more but it isn't particularly satisfying so far.

the whole season is an extended epilogue to the last season/movie, so I'm forgiving it for not having a compelling overarching story besides "Steven fights deep anxiety and fear about the future"
totally with you on the lack of Connie though, it seems like she should've been a key part of this story. but we've got eight more episodes left, i think
def don't agree about Adventure Time's last season, it got too much with all the different threads they had to pull together, as much as I love that series as a whole

Watching this now, some of the episodes haven't aged well, namely Ronalda being a harmless conspiracy theorist but who could've predicted Cue Anon?

That's not fair, because Ronaldo was actually right about half the stuff!

OK the first season is VERY iffy for me -- the humor just doesn't land for me, which makes the season, with how low stakes most of its episodes are, a slog, but when they figure out the mythology of the show, EVERYTHING gets better.
Also, I love the homage to Roadrunner cartoons.

Finally started season 5, and while there are some pacing issues (a whole episode on Mayor Dewey getting booted out of office????), when it focuses on the grand narrative, it's amazing.
