man, that tullio di piscopo track is fantastic. i bought it (on ZYX) at SF's groove merchant years ago, and played the shit out of it when i used to have a downtempoish sunday night weekly at dalva. don cherry plays on it!

that sorcerer LP is OK, but i dont like any of the uptempo tracks.

it feels a little too same-y from track to track, too.

gr8080, Tuesday, 7 August 2007 08:56 (sixteen years ago) link

peter gabriel "i have the touch" totally belongs on a balearic mix

cutty, Tuesday, 7 August 2007 11:16 (sixteen years ago) link

This mix is just like..... unghghnghngh.... an indiluted balearic morphine hit.

Tim F, Wednesday, 8 August 2007 08:48 (sixteen years ago) link

Goddamit. I'm working on a mix right now that I was planning on closing with "in the light of the miracle."

gr8080, Wednesday, 8 August 2007 17:06 (sixteen years ago) link

I already did it for a compilation I made which very few have heard, so now I feel unfairly cheated - however I used the Another Thought version and this one is different, not sure where it's from.

Tim F, Wednesday, 8 August 2007 22:45 (sixteen years ago) link

There's the 13 minute dancey version on the Soul Jazz Russell comp.

Michael F Gill, Thursday, 9 August 2007 00:51 (sixteen years ago) link

Yeah I think it's that one. I really should get around to buying that comp!

Tim F, Thursday, 9 August 2007 01:52 (sixteen years ago) link

the version i have is from this:

http://www.discogs.com/release/209608

i think its 14 mins.

gr8080, Thursday, 9 August 2007 02:00 (sixteen years ago) link

i grabbed that Sorcerer album. i really like it, but i think it coulda been better had he used more live instruments or analog equipment. it kinda suffers from a computer smoothness. (this is the same complaint i got from a friend when making music a few years ago on Reason)

jaxon, Thursday, 9 August 2007 06:29 (sixteen years ago) link

this Danny Krivit edit of In The Light Of The Miracle was just posted here yesterday, and it's very good -- is the same version on the Soul Jazz comp?

lucas pine, Thursday, 9 August 2007 06:59 (sixteen years ago) link

thats how i feel about it, jaxon. i switch it off after like 6 tracks. or skip the faster ones.

does windsurf have any vinyl releases or just that mp3EP on kompakt? i really like the stuff on the myspace.

still stuck on Studio - West Coast. Vinyl should arrive by Friday.

gr8080, Thursday, 9 August 2007 07:44 (sixteen years ago) link

Can someone please download that mix I linked to so that i can do some group-gushing?

Tim F, Thursday, 9 August 2007 10:21 (sixteen years ago) link

"group-gushing"

cutty, Thursday, 9 August 2007 11:59 (sixteen years ago) link

just download it and report back cutty, then tell me if my dodgy portmanteau neologisms are inappropriate.

Tim F, Thursday, 9 August 2007 12:16 (sixteen years ago) link

I'm gonna keep bumping this thread until someone listens to that mix and reports back.

Tim F, Friday, 10 August 2007 02:12 (sixteen years ago) link

i've already listened to it once, have to listen again though as i was preoccupied and my ears only mostly perked up when i heard the familiar eno/byrne collab stuff

cutty, Friday, 10 August 2007 02:35 (sixteen years ago) link

It's pretty good, but I'm not sure I'd put in the Balearic category.

baaderonixx, Friday, 10 August 2007 08:25 (sixteen years ago) link

this Danny Krivit edit of In The Light Of The Miracle was just posted here yesterday

which is a repost from here in May

formerly the most redundant blog ever

Michael F Gill, Friday, 10 August 2007 16:45 (sixteen years ago) link

xpost - i read that blog, as it's in my rss feeds, but i gotta say, i don't really get the love for the edits so much. there was one recently of that Voyage "I Love You Dancer" track by Rune Lindbæk that just didn't make any sense. he really didn't do anything to the track besides add echo to a few parts. why not just play the original?

jaxon, Friday, 10 August 2007 16:48 (sixteen years ago) link

what's the most redundant blog now, michael?

jaxon, Friday, 10 August 2007 16:48 (sixteen years ago) link

Michael F Gill, Friday, 10 August 2007 16:49 (sixteen years ago) link

jaxon, Friday, 10 August 2007 16:52 (sixteen years ago) link

off topic:

hey have you guys heard what i'm gushing over here.

gr8080, Friday, 10 August 2007 16:56 (sixteen years ago) link

I like both LSB singles a bunch, but it's weird how they both seem to revolve around "Some Girls" by Michael Heart. "Original Highway Delight" blatantly samples it, and "FOG" seems to sample something very similar sounding.

The LSB italo edits were just released too, nothing too essential but I do like the P. Lion one.

Michael F Gill, Friday, 10 August 2007 17:11 (sixteen years ago) link

hey tim - new peter visti!

haitch, Sunday, 12 August 2007 05:37 (sixteen years ago) link

the newish Detroit Beatdown Vol 2 ep is like balearic detroit-- really smooth synths, lots of congas, good shit. definitely my best recent purchase!

the table is the table, Monday, 13 August 2007 18:37 (sixteen years ago) link

finally listening to that Diepvries mix.

pretty great in the middle from the max essa track to the mudd and pollard one.

gr8080, Monday, 13 August 2007 19:43 (sixteen years ago) link

detroit balearic sounds very funny. "this one goes out to all my oppressed brothers who couldn't catch the sunset today."

Michael F Gill, Monday, 13 August 2007 22:38 (sixteen years ago) link

wow.

The Alton Miller "Souls like mine" album from this year is pretty good.

Michael F Gill, Monday, 13 August 2007 23:47 (sixteen years ago) link

most of the alton miller stuff is pretty good, imho.

also, that comment about the oppressed bros and sunsets was more than a bit offensive.

by Detroit Balearic, i mean it has the synths and feel of detroit techno/hi-tech jazz, but the BPMs are slower, the samples jazzier, the vibe more 'chill.' really quite nice.

the table is the table, Tuesday, 14 August 2007 00:25 (sixteen years ago) link

it was a stupid irreverent joke! this is the internets though, so i deserve what i get. i guess it was just my kneejerk reaction to seeing the balearic adjective applied to yet another style.

Michael F Gill, Tuesday, 14 August 2007 00:36 (sixteen years ago) link

I wouldn't worry about it too much Michael, the idea of the Beatdown guys being Balearic is just plain silly.

grady, what is that Mountain Machine? is that a Mountain of One side project? or are jordorowsky references just flying off the shelf these days?

jaxon, Tuesday, 14 August 2007 04:58 (sixteen years ago) link

is that a Mountain of One side project?

that's what i assumed at first, but i'm not sure anymore. when i was on the myspace last week, one of the tracks on the mp3player had accompanying artwork that looked like something i had seen on a bit of AMO1 promo but i think its gone now.

gr8080, Tuesday, 14 August 2007 05:06 (sixteen years ago) link

both the artwork for the song Mountain Machine and A Mountain of One use this imagery, from jodorowsky's Holy Mountain

http://img408.imageshack.us/img408/3686/holymountainbo2.jpg

jaxon, Tuesday, 14 August 2007 05:08 (sixteen years ago) link

from a comment posted on Mountain Machine's page. can we name all of the references? it's seriously my record collection. i've got McDonald & Giles, Max Roach "Members Don't Git Weary", White Noise (lightning bolts), Brian Eno's "Another Green World" (weird characters under wave), Thom Yorke, Selda, Sa Ra Creative Partners, Fela Kuti, Eddie Gale (in robes), John Lennon/Plastic Ono Band, Lou Rawls, Gentle Giant (king in crown). there's a lot more i recognize but can't place.
