For albums as leader, I've only heard "Interstellar Space" and "Rootless Cosmopolitans" which gives Nels the edge.

I love Ribot's Cuban band and I also like Nels Cline when he does the abstract noize thing. Tough to compare those two.

I'd have to go with Nels Cline. In fact, I'd always kind of hoped that someday Nels would fill the Ribot role in one of Tom Waits's newer albums, instead of what's-his-name from Beck's band. When I was writing a review of Nels's new CD (an album of Andrew Hill covers), I was tempted to compare it to Los Cubanos Postizos.

Nels due to seeing him live quite a bit, usually with other people. His solo on "Liberty Calls" w/Watt at a Costa Mesa show was indescribable.

I like some of Cline's stuff (the new Hill disc is decent), but I'm gonna go with Ribot. That Spiritual Unity album of Ayler tunes was a killer - plus, his guitar work on Rain Dogs, as mentioned above.

I wanted to like it but I thought the Nels Cline Andrew Hill thing was a nice effort, there's obviously a lot of respect for Hill's compositions coming from Nels, but the whole thing sounded overly slick and stiff to me. I'm a big Andrew Hill fan though and you can't do too badly w/ his tunes.

Spiritual Unity vs. Interstellar Space I think I have to go with Spiritual Unity for overall execution of the concept. But I find these two so f'ing amazing that I can't ts.

Cline is outstanding on the new Scott Amendola, too, which, as long as we're talking skronky guitar nerds, includes Jeff Parker, too.

I've always been more impressed by Cline but I haven't heard much of Ribot's Cuban material, which seems to be highly rated here. I've seen both live, actually. (Definitely preferred Cline in that context.)

If I'm currently obsessing over Ribot's work with Waits, what's the best entry point into his large discography as a solo (or top-billed collaborative) artist? Intrigued by Ceramic Dogs (lover the personnel but put off by descriptions of it as a 'power trio'). Help?
