Was the Burritos' cover of "Wild Horses" the first cover song to ever be released before the original? I know the Stones recorded "Wild Horses" in Muscle Shoals during the '69 tour, but the Burritos released their cover in 1970, and obviously the Stones' didn't come out until '71.

As you can tell, I'd say to search out this song, as their cover of "Wild Horses" is excellent.

But does this song have the rare distinction of being the only cover to come out before the original, or did it happen on other occasions?

i think Les Fleur de Lys' cover of the Who's "Circles" ended up being released first due to legal issues holding back the release of the Who version..

I'm intrigued ... cool setlist, and I'm assuming the sound will be good.
Also really interested in that $1000 Wedding demo at the end of disc 1 -- has that appeared anywhere else (officially or bootleggy?)

^^^^^ the live at the avalon is quite nice, a bit rough but some smokin' covers, esp. "mental revenge." michael clarke surprisingly solid on the drums!

God I love The Gilded Palace of Sin. What a fucking amazing record.

ian, Friday, 24 October 2008 01:04 (fifteen years ago) link

I can take 'em or leave 'em, frankly. Gram Parsons has that wounded-goose warble that needs a really strong Emmylou to make it sound good, and their Sweetheart-o'-th'-Rodeo instrumental fussiness doesn't pack a lot of wallop for me. But I'm in the minority here, so go at 'er.

(I've always loved "Sin City" and "Wheels", though.)

anyone here checked out Live At The Avalon Ballroom 1969? It's listed as Gram Parsons Archives Vol. 1 but it's (mostly) a FBB set, I gather. I'm not sure about the provenance of the "$1000 Wedding" on disk 1, which is a solo take and ghostly and beautiful. The "When Will I Be Loved" that ends disk 1 is fragile and goofy at the same time; and kinda kinda sounds like a Stones outtake; is he just singing with Hillman or are others present? Anyway, it's very nice. The "Sin City" on disk 2 is sad and gorgeous; actually the "Hot Burrito #1" on side 2 is pretty downbeat too, compared to the one on side 1. I don't have the liners handy; does it say why the vibe of the two disks is so different? Are they different nights, or just different sets from the same night? Drugs may be the answer. The organ on "Hot Burrito #2" on disk 2 is more like "Hot Chicken #1", or more like "Sudden Organ". Overall, disk 2 is better, I think.

Bought this a couple of weeks ago. It's two April nights in San Fransisco recorded during a Grateful Dead tour, with FBB opening. Bonus tracks on the first disc are demo versions. I'll check the liner notes if there's any more info on those demos. Didn't know this existed, just stumbled upon it while browsing a local shop - a great find!

willem, Sunday, 28 February 2010 19:27 (fourteen years ago) link

"When Will I Be Loved" was taped in NYC in 1967 (!), played by "Gram Parsons and Friends".
"Thousand Dollar Wedding" was taped in LA in road manager Jimmi Seiter's house and it is indeed only Gram on the piano.

honestly felt that live album wasn't as good as a lot of the boots i have

thanks for the info, willem!

I thought the first disk was pretty lackluster until the demo takes at the end. The second disk has a more delicate vibe and I'd listen again. Are the other boots you have in mind rowdy, or more on the tender side?

There's something on the RIP thread, too:

I've only got Gilded Palace and a compilation, so there's a lot I don't know, but "Christine's Tune" is an all-time favourite:

I saw Pete Townshend play this at a solo show in 1997. He introduced it with a story about riding around California with Gram Parsons in 1969 and telling Gram, "I think you're great, I think your group's great, I think you'll be really successful..." Gram said, "Well, thanks, Pete. 'Cause we're starving."

H'm-m-m, what was he spending his trust fund on? Read a claim by one of his pals, that he was so wasted when went to pick up some loot, they had to take him in a wheelchair. Water under the bridge--get it while you can, musically, that is http://bbchron.blogspot.com

Chris Ethridge was in the International Submarine Band, too, although he may not have played on "Blue Eyes," my favourite song by them--he joined after it had already been out as a single (but before the album was completed).

was looking through my collection last night - i've got a lot of chris ethridge! randy newman, ry cooder, burrito bros, graham nash., that dave mason solo album... wonder what his contribution to those parsons co-writes was. I mean, if you were going to pick the best Parsons songs to have co-writes on, those'd be up there.

Burrito Deluxe is pretty under-rated in the FBB/Parsons canon. "Older Guys"..."Lazy Days"..."Man In The Fog"...

errr, he really is barely keeping it together. that recent post-parsons gig they put out is a lot more solid rhythmically.
