OKLAHOMA CITY -- Nine days after her nomination, a political cartoon featuring Judge Sonia Sotomayor that was published in the Oklahoman is getting national attention from the Latino community.
Some have argued that the cartoon, which was published in Tuesday's edition, carries a message that's less political than racist.
It features the Supreme Court nominee hanging like a piñata while President Barack Obama lines up elephants meant to represent Republicans waiting to take a swing at her.
"I don't personally see the racism in it, but I do see where someone could," said Kristy Smith of Oklahoma City.
"Did you see (Obama) hanging from a piñata? No, right? Or anything else that has to do with that type of race? I don't think so," said Jackie Vargas.
Vargas was one of several people in Oklahoma City who said they felt the cartoon was racist. Others, however, said they took an opposite view.
"I really do think it is more political than it is racist, just making fun of everything and trying to lighten things up," said Jessica Cabrera.
The cartoon is also sparking national attention from cities with large Latino communities, like New York. Many find it offensive because the piñata reference is part of the Mexican culture and Judge Sotomayor is Puerto Rican.
"I do know that it's offensive, and I think that it reflects a lot of the ignorance that many Americans have about Latinos, that we're all Mexican or all this or all that," said New York publisher Rossana Rosado.
The cartoon's creator said that stereotyping was his goal.
"Since she emphasized her Latinaness and played it up as a virtue, I thought, 'Well, how about a fiesta and a piñata?'" said cartoonist Chip Bok. "This is a Mexican thing, but again, we're dealing with stereotypes. That's all kind of the joke, I thought."
The cartoonist also said that to say he's insensitive is part of his job, like telling basketball players that they're tall.
The Senate Judiciary Committee plans to hold Supreme Court confirmation hearings this summer.

ok the murder/not murder one either makes no sense or confirms something that in my naivete i had assumed ~wasn't~ the case. that is: strongly pro-life ppl thinking the death penalty is cool and justified.

mkaes perfect sense: unborn children are innocent, guilty perps deserve what they get (also not guilty perps, cf. guantanamo).
― man saves ducklings from (ledge), Wednesday, 10 June 2009 09:38 (fourteen years ago) link
Well, yeah, but that would make the vast majority of people in the world "pro-life" - pretty much anyone off the street would agree, "Hey, let's not kill innocent people!" It's cheap grace, adopting as some deep principle something that's trivially obvious. The Catholic Church as a body at least can call itself "pro-life" even in the harder cases: It opposes abortion, capital punishment and the Iraq war.
