I have to say that thumbs-up Osama is the best thing to happen to comics since the Yellow Kid

J0hn D., Saturday, 30 June 2007 18:43 (sixteen years ago) link

WTF on the malaria one:

1) DDT is HARDLY the only insecticide used for killing mosquitoes and I feel comfortable in saying that even IF one were to discount the environmental issues inherent in the use of DDT, it's not even the most effective available insecticide currently in use.
2) Is this guy suggesting that we should be giving more support to countries in which malaria is rampant? If so, why not say it in a less oblique fashion? Or is he strawmanning mass death by disease in order to back up a poorly thought out anti-environmental talking point?
3) Batshit rightwing cartoonist guy, are you ACTUALLY arguing against bald eagles and for DDT? Really?
4) So DDT and/or chemicals with a similar makeup are not being used in outside the US at all, huh? And there are bald eagles in countries with rampant malarial infection, huh?
5) STOP JUST STOP JUST STOP

forksclovetofu, Sunday, 1 July 2007 00:22 (sixteen years ago) link

the malaria/ddt thing is a pretty widespread rightwing talking point. for example and its counter

BUt yeah, we're in the time of the politics of resentment, so there are those who try to compensate with their lack of governing skills with volume of whining.

fluorescent bulbs last, like, 10 times longer than an incandescent bulb. That's just a flat-out, deliberate lie.

kenan, Monday, 2 July 2007 17:44 (sixteen years ago) link

Of course that cartoon is dimwitted, but the Fairness Doctrine is completely stupid.

kenan, Monday, 2 July 2007 18:01 (sixteen years ago) link

well lighting technology is part of my job so I'm kinda pissed to see the dissemination of outright lies

Shakey Mo Collier, Monday, 2 July 2007 18:05 (sixteen years ago) link

El Tomboto, Monday, 2 July 2007 18:06 (sixteen years ago) link

Plus, the lion's share of the CFLs on the market today are actually slightly warmer in color than standard tungsten. Not only is he lying though his teeth, but there's absolutely no point to it.

http://media.townhall.com/Townhall/Car/b/ca0702bd.jpg

I like this one because, if you think about it for more than a half a second, it actually pretty elequently makes the exact opposite point (I assume) it's trying to make.

The people are a bully with a short attention span and a distrust of anything complex, so he comes over and knocks down something that two kids, usually sworn enimies, have spent a lot of time working together to build, and something that might well have been pretty cool.

the way they portray Muslims in these is curious, like "why think up a new stereotype when you can just modify the Jewish one?"

now that is not true at all. I either go on or create RIP threads for specific people I find reprehensible and cheer their passing. I can count on one hand the number of people this has included (Jack Valenti, Jerry Falwell, and whatsername that blonde bimbo).

I would mourn the passing of anyone as skilled and devoted to their craft as Lacey - this is a guy who has obviously crafted a very idiosyncratic and unique style through diligence and attention to detail and I respect that.
