"night dubbin" is decent, maybe not quite as crazy as i'd hoped

moonship journey to baja, Thursday, 28 May 2009 02:56 (fourteen years ago) link

it's like this: the tracks on the unmixed disc are *fantastic* but for some reason on the mixed disc the energy level seems lower than on the unmixed discs. not sure why that is ... a similar thing seemed to happen on "fistful of ferrets". somehow the idjuts managed to make DC sound tamer and milder than the earlier "death before distemper" volumes. and on "press play" also. are they mellowing with age?

moonship journey to baja, Thursday, 28 May 2009 06:11 (fourteen years ago) link

Nobody heard it yet?

moonship journey to baja, Thursday, 28 May 2009 18:49 (fourteen years ago) link

Should be on my doorstep today... honestly though I don't know that on any of these 3-disc BBE things that I've ever preferred the mix disc to the unmixed ones, they always seem staged like a relatively perfunctory "bonus" rather than the focus of the package. I suspect that the "mixed by Idjut boys" thing might have been more of an afterthought marketing ploy than the original concept for the release (could be wrong)

Bangelo, Thursday, 28 May 2009 18:55 (fourteen years ago) link

a highly subjective "best of" mix just for the hell of it ... pardon the trainwreck or two and the excessive use of reverb and delay towards the end. my excuse is that it's only fitting for the subject matter.

phantom slasher - endup
idjut boys - gentle approach
phantom slasher - poxymoron
idjut boys & quakerman - dum dum de dum
phantom slasher - lasagna for 10
phantom slasher - i got my love
major swellings - assquake
thick as thieves - tiny bubbles
major swellings - spit and dip
phantom slasher - oochie coochie
idjut boys & quakerman - corrective surgery
idjut boys - sweet gerry dynamite

moonship's idjut boys best of

the last mix is just embarrassing ... i got distracted and suddenly realized the record had run out ... so i threw on the next one but forgot that i still had the reverb turned all the way up and the pitch turned down from "oochie coochie"

moonship journey to baja, Monday, 8 June 2009 03:35 (fourteen years ago) link

i should go back with audacity or something and throw in a sound effect or something to cover up the silence

moonship journey to baja, Monday, 8 June 2009 03:36 (fourteen years ago) link

also got completely carried away with the delay on "sweet gerry dynamite", hope nobody gets a headache

so using my fantastic detective skills (been watching the wire a lot lately) and my impressive knowledge of music, i've come up w/this

GRUBBLE

Lasagne For 10 - Chilly "For Your Love"
Size Doesn't Matter - "Whole Lotta Love" (sounds like tina turner)
Eat Them Jeans
Staying Noid - Richard Ace "Stayin' Alive" (??)
Backwards Is The Best Way Forward. Baby
Satchell On My Door Step - Roxy Music "The Main Thing"
Your Wistful Sigh
Love Ranger

KEY TO THE TRIPOD

Oxymoron - some weird mashup of "genius of love" and "fly like an eagle"
Poxymoron - Boys Town Gang "You're The One"
Tripod - Warp 9 "Nunk"
Le Cock Noir
Blow Me Slow - Hot RS "Slow Blow"
Noid Life - Spandau Ballet "Lifeline"
Nicoteen Five Sinners "Magic"
Una Bella Donna - Junior Byron "Woman"
Tent Pole
Bethlehem
I Got My Love (i NEED to know what this one is. it's killing me)
Sax & Violence - Leroy Hutson "Love The Feeling"
Going Greek - Demis Roussos "I Dig You"

(jaxon) ( .) ( .) (jaxon), Thursday, 11 June 2009 15:53 (fourteen years ago) link

Tent Pole - Class Action "Weekend"

psychgawsple, Thursday, 11 June 2009 16:04 (fourteen years ago) link

Tripod AKA Skull Volley

psychgawsple, Thursday, 11 June 2009 16:08 (fourteen years ago) link

d/ling mix now.

CosMc (Raw Patrick), Thursday, 11 June 2009 19:33 (fourteen years ago) link

Staying Noid - Richard Ace "Stayin' Alive" (??)

is this the same track sampled for jess & crabbe's "in your eer"? bassline sounds identical..

anybody know the original for "sheen" off the phantom slasher "puddle & spout" CD? sounds like something off CTI maybe??

guammls (QE II), Saturday, 13 June 2009 06:19 (fourteen years ago) link

dan & conrad never apologize for reverb & delay

seriously, criticizing idjut boys for their use of echo is in a way like criticizing hendrix's use of fuzz or zapp's use of talkbox

one month passes...

thanks to the recent horse meat disco comp, we now know "furry whiplash" is a re-edit of "disco jam" by eddie drennon

TracerHandVEVO (Tracer Hand), Thursday, 15 March 2012 15:25 (twelve years ago) link

WTF?

they must mean "first LP of original exclusive productions"

because by my count they've released

noid long player
life: the shoeing you deserve
puddle & spout
gruble
key to the tripod
desire lines

and

more or less / the u-star daze

which admittedly is an early "greatest hits" comp and mix

the late great, Thursday, 15 March 2012 22:48 (twelve years ago) link

so which would be the best place to start?

boxedjoy, Friday, 16 March 2012 00:25 (twelve years ago) link

U-Star Daze.

“What we’ve tried to do is make an LP, four tracks a side on vinyl. You stick it on your stereo, have a cup of coffee and read the paper. When it’s finished you stick the other side on. So we’ve made an LP in the traditional way.”

mizzell, Friday, 16 March 2012 14:14 (twelve years ago) link

wasn't too impressed with "One For Kenny" til that piano break came in, then it was pretty great. very much looking forward to drinking coffee and reading the paper to this.

mizzell, Friday, 16 March 2012 14:26 (twelve years ago) link

meanderthals was my soundtrack for that on a lot of sunny weekend mornings last year

the late great, Friday, 16 March 2012 16:00 (twelve years ago) link

my favorites is actually "life: the shoeing you deserve"

"more or less" is a 2cd comp w/ a mixed 2nd disc, that mixed 2nd disc was re-released in the US as "the u-star daze"

i would go with any of those, and then move on to puddle & spout, gruble, etc etc which tbf are basically i guess just elaborate re-edit comps

the late great, Friday, 16 March 2012 16:01 (twelve years ago) link

second Meanderthals, sublime balearic dub bliss.

one month passes...

Since those early albums seem impossible to find at a reasonable price, I've got stuck into Press Play and Night Dubbin. Really enjoying the track selection on Press Play, but I feel like as a mix it kinda crashes with the cover of Word Up and doesn't really get itself back on track, like the section from there to the end should have been at the start to warm up instead. Night Dubbin is great though, I love the sense of dark queasiness hanging over it, and both mixes are so impressive with the way they eschew traditional beat-matching yet putting together transitions that seem to flow naturally.

i am not really loving cellar door :-/

max, Tuesday, 1 May 2012 16:10 (eleven years ago) link

is that a good label? i didn't get into the first smith & mudd album, it had that same-y mush-y vibe that a lot of rong releases seem to have.

just to say again, probably, but Smokin' Balls is a fantastic track.
