Thought that'd be higher.
― Raw Patrick, Sunday, 4 May 2008 22:16 (sixteen years ago) link
It took a hit because only the first game of the series was nominated, which isn't the best. The huge, freeform maps didn't appear until Sonic CD and Sonic 2.
― abanana, Sunday, 4 May 2008 22:20 (sixteen years ago) link
Can we wrap up this thread so I can get on with the rest of my life, plz? I've got papers to write.
Sonic's a decent game, but if I were heading off to a desert island there'd be at least 100 others I'd pick first.
xpost Super Mario World hasn't come up yet.

up down left right A B C start
― DG, Sunday, 4 May 2008 22:21 (sixteen years ago) link
wow, so sonic's ahead of all the mario games?
Surely an effect of vote-splitting - there was only one Sonic game nommed versus half a dozen Marios. Given the restrictions on nominations, that spread probably gives a clearer indicator of ILX's collective preference on this battle.
But Sonic is still fucking great.
― Doctor Casino, Sunday, 4 May 2008 22:21 (sixteen years ago) link
oh yeah, that's true (xp mario world)
did sega do a lot better in the uk? i knew some kids who had them, but everyone had an nes and snes
― circles, Sunday, 4 May 2008 22:22 (sixteen years ago) link
Yes.
― Raw Patrick, Sunday, 4 May 2008 22:22 (sixteen years ago) link
For some foolish reason I begged for the Genesis over the SNES and got it. I think at that particular moment the Genesis was cheaper, and with Sonic in the deck the two systems were fairly comparable. Unfortunately, it turned out that the last 2-3 years of the SNES produced an absolute slew of stone-cold classic games, whereas the Genesis kind of just puttered on, getting somehow more grainy-looking with each game.
― Doctor Casino, Sunday, 4 May 2008 22:24 (sixteen years ago) link
Not just the UK, Europe and South America as well were areas with much bigger Sega penetration than Nintendo.

It's only as I contemplate what puzzle games I like better than Lemmings that I notice the conspicuous absence of Dr. Mario.
― Z S, Sunday, 4 May 2008 22:30 (sixteen years ago) link
Lemmings is possibly the perfect mobile phone game.
― Dom Passantino, Sunday, 4 May 2008 22:30 (sixteen years ago) link
Brilliant game but there's never been a perfect version of it. Eventually too much of the challenge comes from hitting the right lemming at the exact right time.
― abanana, Sunday, 4 May 2008 22:31 (sixteen years ago) link
NES version was fucked so you could get in an infinite loop that stopped you finishing a level. Coz of that--fuck it.
― Raw Patrick, Sunday, 4 May 2008 22:31 (sixteen years ago) link
I voted high for nostalgia, didn't expect it to zoom so far up. It's one of the few games I played LOADS, though.

The only game all my girlfriends have liked as well.
Not Battlezone.
I am ok with mario world being number one. the visual / audio melee of crossing a goal post riding yoshi with bullet bills a flying and chucks a charging and the spotlight zooming in is soooo satisfying

― Catsupppppppppppppp dude 茄蕃, Sunday, 4 May 2008 22:44 (sixteen years ago) link
Mario Kart 64 had better tracks - and four player was a big plus - but the AI cheating was turned up even more than before (and it's still way up). It's just retarded when you hit Princess with two shells near the end of a race, only to have her boost past you for the win seconds later, for no reason.
― Z S, Sunday, 4 May 2008 22:45 (sixteen years ago) link

ZS - I mainly played it in multiplayer with minimum of two other people, so the computer AI wasn't really an issue for me. But I can believe that would be obnoxious!

PAGING DR CASINO
Most overrated game of the 90s? That screenshot says it all - four hideous deformed freaks in a completely undifferentiated space. My friend Matt and I played this a couple years ago, and every deathmatch ended with us running out of time before we even found each other to try and shoot it out. Like, "OK, I'm gonna stand still in this room. You come here and shoot me." "Fuck, how do I get over there?" This game sucks.
Goldeneye is one of the best FPSs ever in single or multiplayer. You know it's the best selling N64 game ever? The weapon selection, the mission design, the level design - "completely undiffferentiated space" wtf? the levels were copied straight from the Goldeneye sets which means, as the game producer Martin Hollis puts it, "many of the levels in the game have a realistic and non-linear feel. There are rooms with no direct relevance to the level. There are multiple routes across the level ... it contributes to a greater sense of freedom, and also realism".
More from Martin Hollis on why it ruled in this great "making of" article: http://www.zoonami.com/briefing/2004-09-02.php

― Dom Passantino, Sunday, 4 May 2008 22:55 (sixteen years ago) link
Dude, even if the levels had been copied from the house I grew up in, I would have been lost because everything would have looked the same. Can you even jump in this POS?
"There are rooms with no direct relevance to the level" === "there's random shit that wastes your time and they didn't get around to filling it up with enemies, items, or details to distinguish it from every other environment in the game."
― Doctor Casino, Sunday, 4 May 2008 22:57 (sixteen years ago) link
I didn't vote in this. CT would've been my #1.
I hope Earthbound is on the list, but I kinda doubt it
