how many signals can our rotten culture send that identifying with anyone is delusional? the sense of betrayal about all this is nauseating

First, I don't care about Grimes as an idol nor would I identify with her, I think Visions was great and Art Angels was poor and that's the extent of what I think about Grimes as a musician. It would take much more than dating Elon Musk for me to not give her next LP a try. However, she does have her hands in many causes that I do care about, and those causes come in direct conflict with the libertarian visions that Elon Musk has been barking constantly. I think that's ground for disappointment, and I think it's fair to wonder if she has been sincere about her politics.

Second, I think identifying with positive figures is a great thing to do (to a certain extent) and I can totally imagine a 19 year old female musician having a hard time breaking out in the industry taking solace in the success of someone like Grimes. I don't think it's delusional, but I agree that there is no betrayal in the sense she doesn't owe anything to her fans.

i think it’s perfectly natural, fun even, to “identify with” (not sure what that means) an artist whose work you like and who seems cool in interviews or on social media. part of liking things is “identifying” with them. it’s also reasonable to be disappointed if they say something unchill. “identifying with anyone is delusional” is over the top. like who cares

Struggling with myself here because making this comment is something I would call another person out for doing, and it's the art not the artist, and I have deep respect for her work and personal autonomy and how people choose to live is not my business. But my eye is drawn again and again to observing that she doesn't look very well in those pictures. I feel uncomfortable seeing them, but my personal history is a major factor there.

The thing is the disconnect between her so called ideals and dating Elon Musk. She had “anti-imperialist” in her twitter bio not so long ago. So much for counter culture.

Just like Kanye it feels like a slight treason on what they used to think and express in their previous artistic endeavors before 2018 came along and made sellouts of them all.
