Blackberry: Classic or Dud?

I got given a free Blackberry Storm the other week and within a few days went back to my old Curve. The touch-screen keyboard just seemed incredibly difficult to use and unresponsive, which kind of defies the point of the device. It looked great but I'm not sure whether it's objectively worse than the iPhone I just don't like touch-scree interfaces.

The old-skool Curve is classic for all time though. Also it has a much better version of Brickbreaker, which is all important.

I'm not that crazy about the Blackberry browser, but in a way it's a good thing internet isn't too easy to use on it so that I won't be wasting time on it all the time. The planner function, the ability to get e-mail and the keyboard are all great.

i need to get a blackberry this week. what kind should i get? i'll want to use it for typing a lot so no touch-screen keyboards. and where should i get it from, to get the best deals? (my current phone is virgin pay-as-u-go lol, so no upgrading possible really.) tell me the things i need to know in order not to wander into the shop and be entirely at the mercy of evil salesmen~~~

yeah, me too! (funnily enough)

Mark G, Monday, 7 September 2009 09:38 (fourteen years ago) link

I often wonder if it's easy to type on the BB keyboards.

Nathalie (stevienixed), Monday, 7 September 2009 10:53 (fourteen years ago) link

Don't. The iPhone is pretty and the iPod in it is great but it's lacking some pretty basic functionality that practically every other smartphone has like:

- copy/paste
- camera zoom
- search on contacts/emails
- MMS

Nathalie (stevienixed), Monday, 7 September 2009 10:55 (fourteen years ago) link

I meant to say LOL

Nathalie (stevienixed), Monday, 7 September 2009 10:55 (fourteen years ago) link

My present phone has camera/zoom, it's good if you want much lower resolution close-ups.

(Is that why the LOL, nath?)

curve 8520 v 8900... one has awesome new track/scroller thing (less annoying than the pearl) but the other has better screen resolution.

tehresa, Saturday, 3 October 2009 19:27 (fourteen years ago) link

i had an 8900 for a minute. it was alright for what it was but i had gotten used to 3g so i had to move off blackberry (t-mobile still needs to get it together as far as smartphone selection - do they even have touchscreen blackberrys yet?)

alex b. skeaton (tremendoid), Saturday, 3 October 2009 20:26 (fourteen years ago) link

I got the 8900 (definitely way nicer than my really ancient pearl). Tmobile doesn't have the storm - verizon's got a monopoly on it I think, but I refuse to go back to them and I don't want to pay for at&t juat to have an iphone.

tehresa, Saturday, 3 October 2009 22:13 (fourteen years ago) link

aargh

why does technology hate me so much? trying to d/l twitterberry and it's just not working. says i need to alter my browser configuration but every time i change it to "internet browser" it resets itself automatically to "vodafone live" - why the fuck does it keep doing this??????

lex pretend, Saturday, 17 October 2009 17:17 (fourteen years ago) link

i also really want to set it so that it vibrates when i get phone calls or text messages but NOT emails. no idea how to do this.

lex pretend, Saturday, 17 October 2009 17:19 (fourteen years ago) link

twitterberry was really messed up on my new blackberry - it would give me the notifier in the top of my home screen and the led would flash and i couldn't get it to go away. some forums said it's a common issue w/ twitterberry. i just deleted it. gotta find a different app. i don't knwo about the dl issue though :(
which bb do you have?

go into your profiles settings and you can set individual alert preferences for each type of communication.

tehresa, Saturday, 17 October 2009 17:22 (fourteen years ago) link

bb bold. might try ubertwitter, i'm just going by what seems most common on my twitter feed.

lex pretend, Saturday, 17 October 2009 17:23 (fourteen years ago) link

ubertwitter failed as well! "907 invalid COD". technology rage here.

our brave new digital future.

am basically following all the steps here - http://orangatame.com/support/?id=50150000000M7fh - but no matter how many times i do step 5 and save, it defaults back to "vodafone live". WHYYYYYYYYYYYYYY just whyyyyyyy

Mine did that for ages - I think you need to changeit in both Browser Configuration and General Properties. Still, Twitterberry works fine on mine, and it's exactly the same as yours, so no idea what's happening there.

Matt DC, Saturday, 17 October 2009 17:38 (fourteen years ago) link

but i changed it in general properties first as per the instructions! and it just keeps switching back automatically.

it also won't let me log into twitter AT ALL while browsing. AAARGH i hate this stupid machine.

lex pretend, Saturday, 17 October 2009 17:40 (fourteen years ago) link

Are you saving before you close?

Matt DC, Saturday, 17 October 2009 17:42 (fourteen years ago) link

yes!!!!!!!!!! repeatedly! everywhere!

lex pretend, Saturday, 17 October 2009 17:42 (fourteen years ago) link

Also, are you doing this in the Browser itself or on the main Blackberry Settings menu?

Matt DC, Saturday, 17 October 2009 17:43 (fourteen years ago) link

Try whichever one you aren't doing.

Matt DC, Saturday, 17 October 2009 17:43 (fourteen years ago) link

So that would be Options -> Advanced Options -> Browser, and then change the default browser configuration that way.

Matt DC, Saturday, 17 October 2009 17:44 (fourteen years ago) link

in the browser. and it worked suddenly and randomly when i did exactly the same thing as i'd been doing in vain all the other times. fuck this technology shit.

lex pretend, Saturday, 17 October 2009 17:46 (fourteen years ago) link

struggling with the profiles now. can't see how to set a default alert for different things?

lex pretend, Saturday, 17 October 2009 17:47 (fourteen years ago) link

Haha now NEVER CHANGE IT AND NEVER SWITCH IF OFF EVER AGAIN.

ok, sigh, how the hell do i get photos off the blackberry and on to my mac?? keep trying to drag and drop them but it says "the finder cannot complete the operation because some data in <jpg file> could not be read or written (error code -36)". and i want to throw it all across the room and tear the head off whoever invented these cursed machines.

I have a second hand Blackberry in a drawer. I broke my current phone at the weekend and spent all Sunday afternoon trying to figure out all the hows/whats/whys of it before I decided to just give up and stick my SIM in an old Nokia 3310

Pretty happy with the new Blackberry Curve (I think mine is 8330). The newer browser is a huge improvement. I kind of don't want an elaborate gaming/music/app device so much as just a good way to check and send e-mails on the go and occasionally get directions or a quick food recommendation. I find the BB well-suited to this and I like the BB keyboard (probably the main reason I didn't switch to another brand). My stubby fingers and touch screens don't get along.

gah, what's the best ilx stylesheet for the blackberry (8520)? the iphone one has all the text in a thin tiny column in the middle of the screen and i don't see an option for a mobile stylesheet (though i did c&p <a href=http://www.ilxor.com/ILX/NewAnswersControllerServlet?xml=true&stylesheet=mobile.xsl&boardid=40>;this</a> but i cant get to search or the individual boards or anything from that link

Old.css works fine on mine.

Matt DC, Tuesday, 8 March 2011 11:08 (thirteen years ago) link

that's loads better, thanks matt.

what are the best settings? i find that when the list of threads comes up its in real tiny text so i zoom in but then have to select 'column view' to be able to read it properly, same with each thread too. is there a way of setting the blackberry browser to do this automatically?

I completely missed out on Blackberries. They definitely had a pop-culture moment in the mid-2000s, when someone like Paris Hilton would be widely known for using hers. Some called them crackberries because they were apparently so addictive. But what features did they have that garnered that much attention? Was it just their web-browsing and texting capabilities? Throughout their heyday, I was on old Nokia bricks and flip phones. When I graduated from those, smartphones had already been a thing for several years.

peace, man, Thursday, 18 May 2023 14:47 (eleven months ago) link

According to the movie, phone + web + texting was revolutionary. But, as Paris Hilton might say, I am so not the person to answer that.
