Thanks Nedphonica!, patience is a virtue (or so they say). I'll buy the new Nick Cave and some Pet Shop Boys to tide me over.

Star Cauliflower (Star Cauliflower), Thursday, 13 January 2005 05:36 (nineteen years ago) link

That is a fine state of affairs. :-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 13 January 2005 05:39 (nineteen years ago) link

It's "The Weedy Burton!" About which I know nothing except I like the name.

I wish I'd have seen this when you posted it, Ned. I totally could have ruined the surprise for you. Sadly, I seem to have well over half of the rare shit they've stuck on the reissues so far.

I notice that Bob was prudent enough to leave off 'See The Children', thank god.

See now putting that on it would have kicked ass! I'd love to own that song on CD.

Will he also re-release Kiss Me, Kiss Me, Kiss Me?

I suppose it's kind of a no-brainer so I'm assuming it will be the case, but I'm really looking forward to "Hey You" on CD. It's one of my favorite songs on that record which I don't even listen to all that often because I'm too lazy to break out the vinyl for stuff I also own on CD.

martin m. (mushrush), Thursday, 13 January 2005 08:55 (nineteen years ago) link

I'm really looking forward to "Hey You" on CD

A (slightly) extended version of "Hey You!!!" is on Join The Dots CD2.

Ned, d'you know where "The Weedy Burton" got its name from?

I took great pleasure in playing "How Beautiful You Are" very loudly last night for the first time in years, and was shamefully proud of the fact that I seemed to know every last word. If only I could remember, y'know, important stuff...

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Thursday, 13 January 2005 09:36 (nineteen years ago) link

I have the 3IB De-Luxe now. The unreleased stuff is really good - if 3IB had had I Just Need Myself, Winter, Faded Smiles and Play With Me on it instead of Foxy Lady, Meat Hook, So What and The Weedy Burton we'd have had a classic on our hands. Maybe stick Killing An Arab in there instead of Subway Song too.

I'm looking forward to 17 Seconds. Anyone know when this will be? I really have no idea what outtakes there are from this era, although at the time I heard some VERY different versions of the songs with different lyrics on a bootleg that was relatively easy to get in the early 80s. Can't recall the name.

This early Cure action led me to play a selection of the later albums from KMKMKM onwards at the weekend. Hmmm - what a rubbish band they became! How can anyone stand stuff like Fascination Street. Soooo boring.

Dr. C (Dr. C), Thursday, 13 January 2005 10:46 (nineteen years ago) link

How can anyone stand stuff like Fascination Street. Soooo boring.

oh shiiiiiiiiit! INCOMING! (it's a Nedbomb...)

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Thursday, 13 January 2005 10:49 (nineteen years ago) link

*weeps in sadness at Dr. C's claim*

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 13 January 2005 13:48 (nineteen years ago) link

"Fascination Street" is by no stretch of the imagination the best song on Disintegration, though.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 13 January 2005 14:20 (nineteen years ago) link

Oh I'm fine with that assertion.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 13 January 2005 15:07 (nineteen years ago) link

It's a little like saying "Massive Attack's Protection is just awful; who likes nonsense like 'Light My Fire'?" (I say "a little" because "Fascination Street" is not the worst song on Disintegration; it isn't even a BAD song.)

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 13 January 2005 15:18 (nineteen years ago) link

The Weedy Burton is a sort-of spoonerised version of 'Bert Weedon' who wrote the play-in-a-day guitar book.

mzui (mzui), Thursday, 13 January 2005 17:07 (nineteen years ago) link

Alright FS was a bad choice. It seems no-one likes it. Try Lullaby - it's crap too. I don't mind Lovesong.

Dr. C (Dr. C), Thursday, 13 January 2005 20:03 (nineteen years ago) link

"Fascination Street" is a kick-ass song. The live version from'Trilogy' also slays.

Star Cauliflower (Star Cauliflower), Thursday, 13 January 2005 20:05 (nineteen years ago) link

Am I allowed to do this?

The same deep water as you > Plainsong > Pictures of you > Lovesong > Disintegration > Untitled > Fascination street > Last dance > Lullaby > Prayers for rain > Homesick > Closedown

Stevie Blunder, Thursday, 13 January 2005 22:55 (nineteen years ago) link

Fascination Street is an average Disintegration track, which means it's utterly perfect.

Plainsong
The Same Deep Water As You
Pictures Of You
Disintegration
Lovesong
Lullaby
Fascination Street
Untitled
Last Dance
Homesick
Closedown
Prayer For Rain

Sansai, Thursday, 13 January 2005 23:03 (nineteen years ago) link

It seems no-one likes it.

Oh no, I love it! It's just not the best song on the album. :-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 13 January 2005 23:06 (nineteen years ago) link

if 3IB had had I Just Need Myself, Winter, Faded Smiles and Play With Me on it instead of Foxy Lady, Meat Hook, So What and The Weedy Burton we'd have had a classic on our hands

Noooooooooooooo!!! "So What" is genius!

"Meat Hook," fine. I'm with you there.

martin m. (mushrush), Thursday, 13 January 2005 23:08 (nineteen years ago) link

PS ALSO FASCINATION STREET ROCKS MY NUTS JUST LIKE THAT WHOLE FUCKEN RECORD!!!

See also this which is related though not completely serious.

martin m. (mushrush), Thursday, 13 January 2005 23:10 (nineteen years ago) link

I really liked you comic Martin. It inspired me to listen to Disintegration today. 'FS' is one of my favourite tracks off that disc.

Star Cauliflower (Star Cauliflower), Friday, 14 January 2005 06:01 (nineteen years ago) link

A neat comic indeed! :-)

Baaderonixxx le Jeune (Fabfunk), Thursday, 27 January 2005 09:06 (nineteen years ago) link

Looks like the 'Boys Don't Cry' question has been answered then.

I wasn't sure what they'd do with these three, whether they might come out as a box on their own, but they all look pretty essential.

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Thursday, 27 January 2005 11:01 (nineteen years ago) link

How horrible these look! Dan and I shall not be buying them immediately on release.

(A more serious question -- hm, no Carnage Visors, then.)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 27 January 2005 14:02 (nineteen years ago) link

Carnage Visors - Faith Disc 1 track 9.

It was the first thing I looked for too, Bizarro Ned.

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Thursday, 27 January 2005 14:07 (nineteen years ago) link

Ah! I completely missed that, I thought it would have been on the second disc for some reason, skipped right over it. Good, then all is well. :-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 27 January 2005 14:10 (nineteen years ago) link

There needs to be more space on disc 2 for home demos. If any of them are half as good as the version of 10:15 Saturday Night on the 3IB second disc then we shall be very lucky indeed.

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Thursday, 27 January 2005 14:17 (nineteen years ago) link

Too many home demos. Why does anyone want to hear home demos?

Dr. C (Dr. C), Thursday, 27 January 2005 14:23 (nineteen years ago) link

Hmm, I was hoping for more studio out takes rather than live stuff. The Faith and Pornography reissues look very interesting though

flowersdie (flowersdie), Thursday, 27 January 2005 14:30 (nineteen years ago) link

Yeah I was also hoping they'd uncover unreleased gems of that era rather than putting out live stuff, but anyway...
Not sure I'll be getting the 17sec one (well not right away, who am I kidding...)

Baaderonixxx le Jeune (Fabfunk), Thursday, 27 January 2005 14:34 (nineteen years ago) link

Too many home demos. Why does anyone want to hear home demos?

Because you end up with things like that dirgey "10:15 Saturday Night".

April has never been further away.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 27 January 2005 14:48 (nineteen years ago) link

Why does anyone want to hear home demos?

What Dan said. The various Cure demos I've heard via bootleg or mp3 over the years are really something, whether home or not, while that never heard before "10:15" was just wondrous. Demos for The Top and The Head on the Door = yow!

Hmm, I was hoping for more studio out takes rather than live stuff.

But I can't wait for that! Certainly I've collected enough live shows from that time by now but they were *so freakin' good* at that time -- not that they weren't later either, but my goodness were they on fire.

April has never been further away.

Yes indeed.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 27 January 2005 15:18 (nineteen years ago) link

As much as I've loved the live shows I've seen (and I really really have), the best live recording I've heard is a 1980 bootleg.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 27 January 2005 15:28 (nineteen years ago) link

You got that Australian show?

Baaderonixxx le Jeune (Fabfunk), Thursday, 27 January 2005 15:43 (nineteen years ago) link

I have a pretty special live bootleg from the Faith Tour (strasberg?) Good and different versions of a Forest and M.

flowersdie (flowersdie), Thursday, 27 January 2005 15:46 (nineteen years ago) link

I don't think the boot I have is Australian and I don't have it with me to check; I want to say it was from Brussels?

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 27 January 2005 15:48 (nineteen years ago) link

Thanks to That New Hub Thing we have, I was able to get a couple of early eighties shows from Teeny the other day. Yay!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 27 January 2005 15:50 (nineteen years ago) link

One of my fave is the Cornwall 1983 show, one of the few of that era, where you'd get them oscillate wildly between the Pornography material and their new sound.

Baaderonixxx le Jeune (Fabfunk), Thursday, 27 January 2005 15:57 (nineteen years ago) link

"april has never been further away" thirded!

it's tricky (disco stu), Thursday, 27 January 2005 23:56 (nineteen years ago) link

OK, boys and girls, time to start saving up - April 26th is the release date for those three albums...

Baaderonixxx le Jeune (Fabfunk), Friday, 11 February 2005 14:18 (nineteen years ago) link

26th? ARGH. WHY NOT START OF APRIL. That's almost a whole extra month. :-(

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 11 February 2005 15:36 (nineteen years ago) link

3 albums = Pornography, Seventeen Seconds, & .... ?

(Confession: I bought the first re-issue, but have yet to listen to it. SHAME.)

David R. (popshots75`), Friday, 11 February 2005 15:37 (nineteen years ago) link

Faith, you forgetful feeb. But I love you.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 11 February 2005 15:38 (nineteen years ago) link

Dude, I know sweet FA about the Cure. Be happy I knew the first two! (& let's cuddle!)

David R. (popshots75`), Friday, 11 February 2005 15:49 (nineteen years ago) link

WUV.

The order of release was 17, Faith and Pornography, and generally have been grouped as a somewhat unintentional trio by Us Cure Freaks in that after the first album and singles they helped to codify 'goth' Cure as such, getting progressively unsettling and disturbing but each with their own particular aura -- none of the albums really resembles each other while all at the same time still feeling part of a continuum. That the next Cure efforts were the pop bounceback singles "Let's Go to Bed"/"The Walk"/"The Lovecats" underscores Pornography as being the end point of that period.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 11 February 2005 15:52 (nineteen years ago) link

Ohhhh, I feel a bit faint, unheard of 17/Faith era tunes, group demos etc: Carnage in decent quality, that live Faith B-side, yay.

If anyone wants any early live Cure send us a mail.

mzui (mzui), Friday, 11 February 2005 15:57 (nineteen years ago) link

Oh my God, the legendary "A Normal Story" surfaces! 17 Seconds xtras are a bit skint (live, live, live, live, live), but given that I expected slim pickings on all the reissues, I can't complain.

"Charlotte Sometimes" relegated to bonus disc-status shocka.

Chris Ott (Chris Ott), Friday, 11 February 2005 20:00 (nineteen years ago) link

a bonus disc is really the only place it belongs though. the first time it ever came out on cd was for standing on a beach right? maybe it was on happily ever after. i don't remember.

it's tricky (disco stu), Friday, 11 February 2005 20:06 (nineteen years ago) link

It was only on Staring at the Sea, and it wasn't their biggest hit to begni with, but it was a proper single and they've played it live, constantly, since it was released. I know Smith hates the mix and it was the breaking point with Hedges, but there's something about burying a real single at the ass-end of a rarities disc that's unnatural to me.

Chris Ott (Chris Ott), Friday, 11 February 2005 21:09 (nineteen years ago) link

two weeks pass...
06. GOING HOME TIME (studio out-take)
Even though it's on the Faith re-issue, I imagine it's safe to assume this is a demo of "One Hundred Years". (I wonder the "studio demo" of it on the Pornography re-issue is the version on the Fast Forward cassette. I hope so!)

Ian Riese-Moraine (Eastern Mantra), Thursday, 3 March 2005 22:16 (nineteen years ago) link

I just got my um "evaluation" copies of the three. I'm not even a hardcore Cure fan, but I'm peeing my pants right now listening to these.
