I think "electro-Frankie Valli" is a pretty astute description of "Oblivion"--it's got some version of that struttin' beat you hear on early Four Seasons songs like "Big Girls Don't Cry" and "Walk Like A Man."

J. Sam, Saturday, 17 February 2018 15:35 (six years ago) link

if it's really as simple as 4AD bouncing it back to her because it's not what they want to release... that's fucking weird.

I don’t think this is it. I really think she wanted to break her contract and move to a major and they were not happy and tried to hobble her

flappy bird, Saturday, 17 February 2018 16:44 (six years ago) link

Oh. That’s pretty different then.

treeship 2, Saturday, 17 February 2018 16:48 (six years ago) link

This isn’t specifically about her, but really fuck passive agressive comments on social networks, if she has a problem with someone tell it to his/her face or involve the lawyers. Everything else is a low shot.

hon, you must be pretty naive if you think a purposeful enough face-to-face conversation is guaranteed to make a label exec see an artist's side or that filing a suit isn't still as costly for an independent artist as it is for everyone else (and perfectly capable of failing and/or further pissing off the label she's still signed to)

"abstract venting" is probably the only way she can inform fans/media about what's happening and take some sort of course of action without hurting her career or getting the lawyers sent after her herself

"hon, you must be pretty naive" is the worst way to start a discussion, if that's actually what you wanted to do.

anyway, i agree with thrust of moka's argument. grimes is great and i can't wait to hear the new album, but posting "ugh, the worst thing happened today, ugh ugh....but i can't tell you what's going on" or whatever on twitter is super annoying. it's somewhat annoying when some relative or acquaintance does it, but at least you could hypothetically reach out to that person privately and ask them if everything is ok. it's more annoying when a well-known musician does it because they're inviting everyone to blindly speculate on what's going on, knowing that no one will be able to figure out what's going on.

unsurprisingly, right after she posted all that, people immediately started speculating that it was her management's fault, or roc nation's fault, so she had to clarify that it wasn't anything to do with them. oooook, always fun to invite rampant speculation and then quash rumors in your replies.

none of it's a big deal or unforgivable or anything, it's just weird to pretend that she was forced to do it by the situation or whatever when there are a million other ways she could have let people know the general situation.

i remember the corned beef of my childhood (Karl Malone), Saturday, 17 February 2018 17:06 (six years ago) link

counterpoint: it's really not annoying at all

lowercase (eric), Saturday, 17 February 2018 17:07 (six years ago) link

Not forced, this is strategy. And a good one imo. I don’t know why y’all find it so annoying, just wait the record will come out somewhere eventually. I mean if it’s about putting pressure on 4AD - bingo! done

flappy bird, Saturday, 17 February 2018 17:09 (six years ago) link

Tbh annoying might be if I was at the grocery store and out of nowhere grimes started venting to me in the produce aisle about vague problems with her record label (tho I'd probably listen intently!) but if that was the sort of thing that'd annoy me I just wouldn't follow her on twitter (not sure if I do or not I never check twitter.)

omar little, Saturday, 17 February 2018 17:10 (six years ago) link

yea exactly... just unplug

flappy bird, Saturday, 17 February 2018 17:11 (six years ago) link

maybe they could create a grimes_official account for updates about tour dates, upcoming releases, and hype

then claire could use her twitter account the way a lot of individuals do, to vent about work and make silly jokes

flappy bird, Saturday, 17 February 2018 17:16 (six years ago) link

The problem I see about not dropping names or explaining what’s exactly happening but still inviting the fans to join the pity fest is that she has some rabid fans.
The moment she posted that she invites the misguided justice hammer of the internet to go attack every possible suspect to the point she then had to post again with the “don’t do crimes for grimes” and that the J Roc label and Jay Z were cool and to stop attacking them, just to end deleting it all. She should know better than to summon te blind wrath of the internet... she has received serious death threats herself back in 2016... that’s how crazy some of her fans are.

Lol yes
Yea I don’t have a problem with it im kinda into it tbh, fuck whoever is fucking with her career, bombs away grimes

Hey, that Claire Boucher has made some good albums, tell you whut.

he doesn't need to be racist about it though. (Austin), Saturday, 17 February 2018 18:26 (six years ago) link

wait is she on roc nation or 4ad?

Van Horn Street, Saturday, 17 February 2018 19:32 (six years ago) link

Repped by roc nation, signed to 4AD

omar little, Saturday, 17 February 2018 19:33 (six years ago) link

Well, Chapman was a hardcore Lennon fan

✖✖✖ (Moka), Saturday, 17 February 2018 19:35 (six years ago) link

My dream is a label run by Charli XCX, Carly, Grimes, Lorde for them just to release mixtapes of whatever ideas they have year in year out and tour together. Who's in?

Van Horn Street, Saturday, 17 February 2018 19:35 (six years ago) link

oh and Sky of course.

why did you name five artists of wildly varying quality?

because grimes, "girl with slightly grating voice who bounces back and forth from rap/r&b hookwoman to doing pc music stuff", "queen of going from call me maybe to indie pop all the gays like" and "girl from posonby who had a record deal since 12 who got big by implying black people were shallow and materialistic social commentary about alienation and luxury and followed that album up with a bunch of moody piano pop that got 91 on metacritic because she was white" all fall along the same artistic axis by virtue of making """""art pop """"", apparently

and by being women

Idk if moka’s comment was passive aggressive really

treeship 2, Saturday, 17 February 2018 20:27 (six years ago) link

Also van horn street’s dream sounds awful. I just grimes to have artistic autonomy. I don’t really like those other artists much.

Also I am not a public figure.

melodrama - it's competent, but doing a "serious" album after your three million selling debut doesn't make an auteur out of a ponsonby-bred trust funder

huh, had some vague memory of hearing ponsonby had been where she grew up but mea culpa for not double-checking and realizing it was devonport

i mean i've never been up to auckland so the one suburb i did know for having its bourgeois reputation precede it seemed like a sensible enough fit with said factoid i'd read/imagined reading

very important to determine to which social class a 21 year old female artist belongs to.

treeship 2, Saturday, 17 February 2018 23:42 (six years ago) link

she barely tweets and the majority of what she does post on social media is direct responses to fan questions on twitter and instagram, it's not her fault that websites will then take those statements and construct headlines and news stories around them regardless of whether or not they tell a complete or satisfying story about anything

i have been posting on the internet since i was a small child and i was still caught completely off-guard when i realized i had to be prepared for everything i posted to be read not just by the specific people i was talking to but to countless more people beyond that who might see it if some person or media entity decided to take it and show it to others without context or my involvement

i thought i was an expert, and i got pantsed by it. every day now i see people who thought they were experts getting pantsed by it. people who get paid to write about the news in the media every day who have a complete meltdown when one day their name turns up in the news.

it is extremely easy to sit around sniping from a distance at people who find themselves exposed thus about how they should be handling it but one day it might happen to you and i promise you will have no idea what you're doing

I wasn't feuding with anyone just pointing out the inherent questionability of criticizing someone for complaining on the internet and not to their face, via complaining on the internet

also do you play ironclad or silent

algorithm is a dancer (katherine), Sunday, 18 February 2018 00:03 (six years ago) link

i can win at least half the time with silent but i'm really frustrated by my inability to get a good ironclad deck going

do you have any build tips?

james brooks, Sunday, 18 February 2018 00:05 (six years ago) link

You were feuding a lil bit but I don’t mind.

I wasn’t really criticizing Grimes I love her, I’d vote for her for president of the world. I was pointing out that public figures ideally need to filter this sort of things or give a fuller picture. Otherwise some rabid fans go and wage twitter wars from them and it doesn’t help their case.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Sunday, 18 February 2018 00:18 (six years ago) link

Either point the finger at who you want hanged by the internet or its better to not say anything, unless you don’t mind all those fans going around writing nasty tweets to people that have nothing to do with this beef like say, Jay Z.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Sunday, 18 February 2018 00:21 (six years ago) link

or you could shut up and not care so much about a public figure

morning wood truancy (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Sunday, 18 February 2018 00:21 (six years ago) link

most consistent I've ever done is with barricade and body slam, preferably with entrench if you can find it. from there it's just a matter of actually getting barricade up
