i do think the initial image of the bottle opener screamed RACIST (I R american)
but i also think the UKists had a fair enough point regarding different sensitivities as seen in US depictions of indians/pakistanis & such

for what it's worth, I stand by the points I made, and I still don't think it's racist for the reasons I fruitlessly outlined. it's clearly a difference of perspective, and no amount of CAPS LOCK is going to make me believe my perspective on it is wrong. there wasn't much in the way of cogent argument for the 'American' side, but I guess that point is that their take on it is intuitive so there needn't be.

The item itself may or may not be intended as racist (I suspect not) but it doubtless fits in an entire lineage of racist cultural iconography.

I had only vaguely heard the name ronaldinho before resding this thread, I didn't know who he was.

Intentionally or otherwise, the bottle opener strikes me strongly as being a racist caricature. I would not, personally, own such an item myself. It stirkes me as being naff, grotesque and tacky.

I generally agree w/ghost rider, ally, matt dc and nabiso, having read the entire thread.

What do you mean? I threw in my two penn'orth on an issue barely worth giving a stuff for, but my two penn'orth was magnified and thrown back to such an extent that I ended up arguing a cause I don't actually have any strong feelings towards, on entirely semantic grounds. 'Calum' was I believe a renowned libertarian with a somewhat dodgy attitude towards foreigners, i.e. totally unlike myself. Whilst I could see their position, I was arguing mine from the unshifting basis that knowing Ronaldinho, I could judge whether a representation of him was racist or not. I decided not, which led certain posters to character-assassinate me. :-(

can someone explain to me what this has to really do with the argument, considering there is not a single american on this thread who defended said depictions (and a few came out and said, "yes, that's bullshit too")?
