It's kinda generic in the best possible way.

I just downloaded a Scotty D and Smoothie T set from January, hopefully containing lots of Scotty D dubs. I'm excited.

Will report back with a link if any good.

I want to hear more stuff like Fuzzy Logik's "Work the love" where the traditional house elements come through really strongly but underpinned by funky's more sinuous rhythms and lurching grime bass. In general more like MA1's april 18th set on Rinse, but more UK (that mix is full of US stuff). The overall vibe is much more laidback than a typical Nasty set but with much richer sonics.

Any recommendations?

hot new Mak 10/Shantie mix

some of the tracks on this mix are sick but sonically it's unbearably clipping and overdriven for ages arrrgh!

I like the first tune about champagne receptions.

Check Dark Night's "Who Said" and "Brpken Beats"

http://www.bm-soho.com/store/AutoKey/104944/dark/knightreasons/broken/beats

Massive tunes, but more pertinently, this is basically 2-step isn't it? "Broken Beats" actually is more like breakbeat garage at its absolutely best, halfway between Zed Bias and Toasty maybe.

So good it makes me want to ;_;

OMG: Puppet Master- Inflation Master Remix

Mix straight into it from "Inflation" (as per Footloose's 17 May show) and it's like the funky equivalent of, i dunno, the first three tracks on Underworld's second album.

The Fantastic 4 (Ill Blu, Roska, Scratcha DVA and D-Malice) set on Rinse FM blog is HEAVY. Lots of ravey and electroic overtones. Fans of Jalla's "Turbulence" should check it.

I can't quite work out whether I love that Madslinky track or I'm faintly appalled by the consequences of funky drifting closer to actual funk.

Matt DC, Friday, 12 June 2009 10:18 (fourteen years ago) link

Matt I haven't listened to the mix yet but Maddslinky is a broken beat-ish outfit by Zed Bias, so it probably doesn't reflect anything about funky per se.

Yeah it's pretty fantastic. Between this and "Time To Get Nasty" Ill Blu is a top candidate for producer of the year. He's certainly the one who seems most in love with R&G - these tunes remind me quite a bit of prime era Davinche, Terra Danjah, Target/Danny Weed...

Lex did you download that Heatwave set i was talking about upthread?? The first thirty minutes is all amazing in this vein - actually includes this track. But I also adore Sami Sanchez's "Dutty Trumpet" with an awesome Stush-esque MC over the top, Grievous Angel & Riko Dan's "Ice Rink" sampling track and Lady Chann and Sticky's track built around "Booo".

Just got back from a night out at some random lounge in Montreal. In the middle of the set at 1:30 in the morning, the DJ busted out Wearing My Rolex and Head, Shoulderz, etc. and also some bassline that I didn't recognize offhand. Unexpected, but awesome.

MTLiens (Alex in Montreal), Saturday, 13 June 2009 07:10 (fourteen years ago) link

OMG the last fifteen minutes or so of the june 10 Marcus Nasty/Mak 10 set is just O_O - amazing militaristic snare-heavy Scotty D track (ID'd by the "whoidit?" signature sample) into this astonishing bass-lurching monster which is like a funky version of old Metope tunes, then a long long blend into the perfect choice of Jalla's "Turbulence".

With stuff like this the whole "funky as feminine reaction to x" explanation just doesn't make sense any more, this stuff is totally ruff and tuff. I'm liking that funky seems to be moving to a kind of dancehall equivalent position where questions of masculinity and femininity are basically suspended.

this dj one drop is one of the best sets ive heard ... part of that might be my bias towards 192kbps mixes tho

i just got that ministry mix, can't wait to put it on - i like that there's a fair number of tracks i haven't heard, so it won't just be the usual bangers (great as they are) in a difft order

lex pretend, Tuesday, 16 June 2009 14:42 (fourteen years ago) link

I cannot believe Ministry put out a funky mix without Heads, Shoulder, Knees & Toes on it. I'd assumed that would be the first name on their teamsheet.

Still it looks a very good mix of well-known anthems and tracks I don't know, while being very dilettante-friendly.

The-Reverend (rev), Tuesday, 16 June 2009 17:01 (fourteen years ago) link

The OneDrop mix bumps obviously - love the unexpected experience of the Ripgroove sample durin Bringing It Down.

Maybe it's just the overload of MC's on this one but it feels like virtually every record here references two or three others, like they're trying to reach some kind of critical mass of whoops of recognition. Route one funky!
