after perusing for a bit, there is no other mayday it could be. unless lady sov is playing with some crap band on Saddle Creek from Omaha, which is doubtful.

store and label run by george acosta, miami's most famous house producer(?), on the beach. seems to specialize in prog/funky/tribal house. worth a trip i guess.

IMPACTO
flagler and sw 47th ave, mostly latin stuff? i don't think it's my scene but i might check it out.

also, i picked this up at the goodwill north of the airport (near the flag center). it's george alvarado as Tech Man 1. pretty good. it's a sound i heard a lot growing up in miami. really simple (to a fault) drum programming and big rave chords. pretty fast tempo. overall pretty good but the first track is killer. i'll do a ysi soon.

yetimike - if you're still looking at this thread: i know michael dean through some friends in nyc, not sure if you're still in touch with him. he still djs around miami from time to time, apparently and is moving to northern california sometime soon. great guy, i have not had the pleasure of hearing him play music. not sure what musical endeavours he has up his sleeve for cali...

Ha ha. I used to sell to Yardbird back in the 80s (I think... it's a little blurry back that far) and he was a sweet gent. Used to make me crazy, he moved so slowly, but he was so f*cking EARNEST.

Him and Charlie the Quaker... who I guess is back on the air in Champaign/Urbana (for those who remember him).

I think that there are almost no good "new" record stores left in the world.

i checked this out a few weeks ago. apparently, it's run by george acosta. i hear his name a lot in miami (he's a trance producer) but i've never heard his music. anyways, it's got a pretty paltry selection, so i can't imagine it has much of an impact on the miami club scene. about 500 records at most, and maybe a couple hundred trance compilation CDs. all the huge tracks of late, like fizheuer and rej. i know that rej isn't very recent but they had tons of copies, including the remixes. very much a "lifestyle shop" as opposed to a record shop. at least the selection was better than uncle sam's, but i still wouldn't call it decent. there were a few gems if you knew to look however, and i ended up taking home pom pom 9.

the web site gives a good idea of how many records they have (very few), but it does not correlate with their stock.

grade: D

lfam, Friday, 9 March 2007 22:35 (6 years ago) Permalink

clicking through acosta's discogs profile, he may have the worst average rating of any artist i have ever looked up! i guess i shouldn't have expected a tropical hardwax.

lfam, Friday, 9 March 2007 22:37 (6 years ago) Permalink

CD Trader in Hollywood, Florida off the Sheridan exit has a huge selection of cds for $2.99 and $5.99. Being Miami, any dance music is very picked over and mostly compliations, but its great for stocking up on indie + pop.

Best Place (for Would-Be DJs) to Buy Vinyl
Super Soul Records
Published: May 12, 2005
Along with a thorough selection, visual impact is crucial at a record store. You want people to walk in and immediately wonder, preferably out loud, "Holy crap, where'd they find all this freakin' vinyl?!" If sheer overload is the name of the game, newcomer Super Soul Records gets the gold. Do the math: 500 milk crates, each holding about 100 records. That's about, what? Fifty thousand freakin' records, that's what. Storeowner King George Johnson has been a vinyl archaeologist in New York City for more than 20 years, unearthing rare soul, disco, funk, Latin, R&B, acid jazz, and techno records since the early '80s. He and his son Jamal packed up a U-Haul and shipped a portion of his collection to Fort Lauderdale to open Super Soul. "King Herc used to come by the house all the time," Jamal, who's the store manager, says of his heady Harlem upbringing. The 20-year-old Jamal has been immersed in his dad's collection since he can remember, and he often hits local hip-hop events, like Rock Bottom Hip-Hop at the Fort Lauderdale Saloon and Catalyst in Pembroke Pines, with crates in hand and records for sale, like Tupac's "Still I Rise" for only $20. That kind of service is nice, but to really get Super sold, get lost in the endless stacks at the store.

i hit up blue note records yesterday and they are moving!

new address:
Ravenswood Warehouse

dude at the store said they should be open by next saturday.

elan, Monday, 23 July 2007 00:41 (5 years ago) Permalink

where is dania?

the table is the table, Monday, 23 July 2007 00:50 (5 years ago) Permalink

north of the old location, near the coast. another 30 minutes driving, i guess.

elan, Monday, 23 July 2007 01:12 (5 years ago) Permalink

That's really far (from downtown Miami or south of it). It's getting harder and harder to find good music stores, here.

Sweat Records changed its hours, too, which is also frustrating. Now it opens at 6 p.m., making it very hard for me to ever get there. It's also become a bit harder to place orders for delivery (for me it has, at least).

Daniel, Esq., Monday, 23 July 2007 02:26 (5 years ago) Permalink

a record store that opens at 6 pm? jeezus, no wonder the lfam orders most of his stuff from forced exposure. that's some weird ass shit.

the table is the table, Monday, 23 July 2007 02:30 (5 years ago) Permalink

also btw, it's no great shakes up here in philly, either. we have more record stores, but other than one new/used and one all-used, the quality is horrific.

the table is the table, Monday, 23 July 2007 02:31 (5 years ago) Permalink

i think sweat changed their hours to get more of the bar crowd

elan, Monday, 23 July 2007 02:35 (5 years ago) Permalink

Yeah, I think that's right. But it's not even a reliable 6 p.m. I once sat around for 20 minutes waiting for them to open, with only a "Back in 5 Minutes" sign on the locked front door. I don't mean to dump on Sweat Records; I've shopped there a lot and it's the best record shop I've ever seen in Miami (in my musically sheltered life, mind you). But that opening time is just very difficult to accommodate.

Daniel, Esq., Monday, 23 July 2007 02:38 (5 years ago) Permalink

I had a good friend who worked there about a year ago; he'd get to Churchill's and see three or four people queued up outside.

It's rather embarrassing that a city this size has only one independent record store.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Monday, 23 July 2007 02:40 (5 years ago) Permalink

Haha. I might have been one of those people.

Normally I'd never wait 20 minutes for any store to open. I only did so because I want to patron them (I like locally-owned businesses), I was there and I knew I wouldn't be back anytime soon.

Now it will be mail-orders only from Sweat, for me. I just can't afford the time to get there during their hours.

Daniel, Esq., Monday, 23 July 2007 02:41 (5 years ago) Permalink

also, yesterday & today records has a big sale this week. like 50% off on most items.

elan, Monday, 23 July 2007 02:42 (5 years ago) Permalink

wait, 50% off vinyl except for "new LP's and certain collectibles"

10% off everything else (cds? i don't know what else)

elan, Monday, 23 July 2007 02:55 (5 years ago) Permalink

Amazingly, in case you're in that neck-of-the-woods, I was in a Borders bookstore in Aventura that had a not-so-terrible music section, for a bookstore. It had a healty reggae section (including the new Trojan Lee Perry disc, The Upsetter Selection), lots of old-time blues, and a lot of decent new rock stuff.

Daniel, Esq., Monday, 23 July 2007 03:00 (5 years ago) Permalink

Uhh . . . I meant "healthy" reggae selection.

i checked out the new blue note location yesterday. it's a lot easier to get to than i expected, mostly because it's right off I-95. it took me about 25 minutes to get there from coral gables. that place is is awesome. they keep the kraftwerk in the soul/funk section. lots of stuff on sale, too. i picked up a horace andy digital dancehall single.

i had a hard time finding their phone number. here it is: 954-961-3928

elan, Saturday, 24 November 2007 21:45 (5 years ago) Permalink

also, i had their address wrong.

corrected:

Ravenswood Warehouse
5931 Anglers Ave
Dania, FL 33312

it's in the warehouses behind the wachovia bank.
