I'm not betting a penny on any website "surviving the long haul" tbh, not even imgur. Agree with pplains that it's just a fact of internet nature that things disappear.

I remember when imageshack was the imgur of its day.
Even those simplemachines forums, where you can upload an image directly into the "Add a Post" box, crash every so often. Then you see posts like "That pic of Joe at the tailgate was lost in The Big Crash of '13" and everyone adding frowning smileys along with their likes afterward.

I'm working on an image upload thing for Zing — the big thing with images is the bandwidth costs, so starting with just posts from it will let me figure out what we're realistically looking at there.

i actually think not having hosting makes us stronger. the threads full of busted images are sad, sure, but most of those are sort of reposting frenzies where everybody's caught the bug of a gag, like putting funny dialogue under pictures of velociraptors, or finding terrible celibrity impersonators... kinda doubt most would want or bother to dl them and rehost them in an ilx-specific thingy, or that any benefits would be worth the hassle. image-list threads (claustrophobic movie posters, horrible 70s albums) tend to fall into text captioning anyway just in case ppl have images turned off or w/e. any really "special" images tend to get downloaded for posterity by one or more persons anyway, and when we have to call upon their aid, that actually reiterates the bonds of community etc. maybe the only thing that'd be a really huge drag is like if the custom countdown graphics for a ballot poll disappeared, cause those are pretty dope. i'd get the argument for imagehosting with stuff like that - ilx-specific content, part of the contribution our posters have made to the collective hivemind.
― Newb Sybok (Doctor Casino), Sunday, 7 January 2018 00:50 (six years ago) link
the biggest drag is when the old domains get snapped up by malware types, who then use the image links to try and inject malware into our pages. That's hit us more than once.
― stet, Sunday, 7 January 2018 00:53 (six years ago) link
yeah I had to clean that up one time it was horrendous
― El Tomboto, Sunday, 7 January 2018 00:54 (six years ago) link
here's a draft use case
- a user posts an image, it has an X day time to live on the server as user-viewable; after that it stays on storage but isn't user-viewable; after X more days, it falls off of storage and just goes away forever because nobody cares- mods can preserve images and bring them "back to life" if they are important to thread content- mods can also rapidly blow away images in case blah blah legal issues / user request
― El Tomboto, Sunday, 7 January 2018 01:01 (six years ago) link
If stet could find an image-hosting service that was free and lasted forever, then sure, I'd be all for it. I'm a serial image poster, especially when they make no sense and have no relevance to the thread.
But that said, Doctor Casino OTM. On the Hüsker Dü countdown thread, I hosted all the images on Photobucket which all turned into hotlinking images recently. I had all the images still on a folder on my hard drive, so I was able to re-upload them all through Imgur, even though the broken images are still scattered throughout the thread. No big deal, not big enough at least to warrant extra expenses and coding.

That Scott Baio impersonator is gone forever though.
oof hadn't thought about the malware angle, that's a great point

somewhat related, it seems like youtube links used to be embedded in a different way, and a lot of old embeds are now blank, no link url, just a big white space - could something be done abt this?

I use the tinypic iOS keyboard for image posting sometimes. Works well.
― Jeff, Sunday, 7 January 2018 17:17 (six years ago) link
You just tap the pic in your photo roll and it paste a URL. Annoying thing is you have to add the http:// but then it works fine. TinyPic Keyboard by Photobucket.comhttps://itunes.apple.com/us/app/tinypic-keyboard/id1027505227?mt=8

Actually, I just went into the settings and you can change that. And even add bbcode tags.

Compared to other boards, there's very little dissensus here to begin with, so I doubt 'hide poster' would be an improvement.

An "all bookmarks read" button (clicking it would remove all unread bookmarked threads from the top) would really come in handy. Really really.
Really.

maybe we could come up with a format of discussing discographies that's less labor intensive than listening threads and artist polls
talking about specific songs rule but ratings and completism both seem obsolete

haha, indeed
I was thinking of something with a kind of rollout though, where everybody would discuss the same songs... I guess maybe the poll format is the best for this...
some of the s/d c/d threads are really great but ime the POX format doesn't invite much discussion
