must be so embarrassing to mix up your assault victims

Karl Malone, Thursday, 9 November 2017 20:19 (six years ago) link

you can get the story right and report it wrong. media sits on so many stories bc they can't substantiate them and they have a higher standard than feeling pretty sure about it. i don't regret arguing against gawker's MO above.

Mordy, Thursday, 9 November 2017 20:19 (six years ago) link

in any case, now is totally the wrong time to have the gawker reporting argument

this is immensely disappointing news and it's depressing and unjustifiable that this guy fucked with any number of women's careers and lives.

Chocolate-covered gummy bears? Not ruling those lil' guys out. (ulysses), Thursday, 9 November 2017 20:20 (six years ago) link

huh I had assumed it was the Garfunkel and Oates ladies

xxp

Οὖτις, Thursday, 9 November 2017 20:25 (six years ago) link

I'm really curious to see how this one goes because most of these guys who've been shamed recently don't have a huge devoted fanbase or aren't considered in their prime. Will Jen Kirkman speak out and how are all of Louis' angry guy fellow comedians going to treat this?

Robert Adam Gilmour, Thursday, 9 November 2017 20:27 (six years ago) link

I think it's curtains on his career.

mel gibson is billed above title in a christmas comedy this year

reggae mike love (polyphonic), Thursday, 9 November 2017 20:30 (six years ago) link

i don't think it's curtains on his career fwiw. as gross + despicable as it is, the allegations are not as serious as the ones made against kevin spacey + harvey weinstein.

Mordy, Thursday, 9 November 2017 20:31 (six years ago) link

Everyone assumed it was Garfunkel and Oates because it was reported as such, thanks to some "researchers" deductions.

I imagine he'll keep writing things like Better Things and do more stuff behind the scenes for a while. Maybe write a book or do an hour stand-up in a hair shirt.

dan selzer, Thursday, 9 November 2017 20:32 (six years ago) link

do more stuff behind the scenes for a while

shades of Roscoe Arbuckle, who directed under a pseudonym

(Tho he was acquiited 3 times, i am an agnostic on Arbuckle's case as i simply don't know enough)

ice cream social justice (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 9 November 2017 20:36 (six years ago) link

genuinely concerned as to how this is gonna impact Better Things; the show has been up and down this season but it feels vital and Pam Adlon is an important and compelling voice on television

Kenneth Anger's account is p persuasive

feel like Hollywood Babylon should be required reading for 2017

AdamVania (Adam Bruneau), Thursday, 9 November 2017 20:42 (six years ago) link

i stayed in that hotel. somewhat strangely, the in-house video about the history of the place that ran on a loop on one of the channels featured the Arbuckle case quite prominently.

evol j, Thursday, 9 November 2017 20:51 (six years ago) link

obv the proper career move for him is to go full alt-right

mookieproof, Thursday, 9 November 2017 21:05 (six years ago) link

then go on tour with Gallagher

Οὖτις, Thursday, 9 November 2017 21:07 (six years ago) link

I def haven't read any books on Arbuckle. What did Anger write?

ice cream social justice (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 9 November 2017 21:09 (six years ago) link

Been a fan of Louis' for a couplefew years, but was always skeeved out by all his pervy "I think about sex 24/7" stuff. Guess I was right to be.

genuinely concerned as to how this is gonna impact Better Things

if your take away from this is genuine concern for a mediocre show about a rich famous person in hollywood and their rich person problems...

kurt schwitterz, Thursday, 9 November 2017 21:13 (six years ago) link

i'm capable of having more than one thought and concern simultaneously, thanks

Chocolate-covered gummy bears? Not ruling those lil' guys out. (ulysses), Thursday, 9 November 2017 21:15 (six years ago) link

tbh I thought of Adlon as well, since she's collaborated closely with him for many years now

Simon H., Thursday, 9 November 2017 21:15 (six years ago) link

ok sorry.. just seems dismissive of the victims but I get it

kurt schwitterz, Thursday, 9 November 2017 21:16 (six years ago) link

Anger has a chapter on the Arbuckle thing in Hollywood Babylon. It's not as exhaustively researched as a whole book (and it's written in his salacious ironic scandal-rag tone) but it convinced me.

Normal men do not have to desperately masturbate constantly in front of other people. What the fuck is the matter with all these men.

Stoop Crone (Trayce), Thursday, 9 November 2017 21:37 (six years ago) link

I have a lot of beliefs, and I live by none of them. That's just the way I am. They're just my beliefs. I just believing them. I like that part. They're my little "believies": they make me feel good about who I am, but if they get in the way of a thing I want, or I want to jack off or something, I fucking do that.

crüt, Thursday, 9 November 2017 21:39 (six years ago) link

If I had heard that years ago, I'd wonder what belief stops him from jerking off in private.

Robert Adam Gilmour, Thursday, 9 November 2017 21:48 (six years ago) link

i really do hope his career is over.

Van Horn Street, Thursday, 9 November 2017 21:53 (six years ago) link

it won't be

Οὖτις, Thursday, 9 November 2017 21:56 (six years ago) link

yeah the problem w/ the gawker thing was that they published it without having talked to any of the victims, witnesses, or louis ck. they wrote "we heard this rumor can anyone confirm that for us"

that's v different from the NYT sop

― Mordy, Thursday, November 9, 2017 3:15 PM (one hour ago) Bookmark

the victims were too scared to talk, louis wouldn't say anything (and hasn't to anyone still), but we had a source who they spoke to immediately after, and who had received communications from louis attempting to apologize for his behavior. the bones of the times' exact story was there. i get why people had adverse reactions to the story but i was confident in it for a reason. i believed at the time that putting a story like that out into the world was worthwhile, and i think that's been borne out now. debating the ethos of a dead site is pretty useless but i take it as vindication that what i wrote was close enough to what the times published that they felt it necessary to link to it in their story. and for what it's worth -- and i alluded to this once in this thread before -- i was referred to sources in the times' story directly by a very well known hollywood person, and the sources point blank told that person "if we speak publicly about this our careers will be over." i'm happy they no longer feel that way.

J0rdan S., Thursday, 9 November 2017 21:57 (six years ago) link

as far as continuing to be a fan of this guy, there are plenty of talented and smart famous artists who don't do shit like Louis CK has done (though there are plenty less who don't do it then we probably assume!)

at least there are probably a few internet macros that can replace his sincere talk show moments.

omar little, Thursday, 9 November 2017 22:00 (six years ago) link

i appreciate your work there, J0rdan

omar little, Thursday, 9 November 2017 22:00 (six years ago) link

i think this vs Mel Gibson is a bit different, in that Gibson's can unfortunately be easily chalked up by many to drunken rants or alcoholism or whatever.

omar little, Thursday, 9 November 2017 22:03 (six years ago) link

the English took his land iirc

monday morning quarterbacking the now-vindicated gawker story seems really weird given the fact that i seriously doubt today's NYT story would have even happened had the gawker story not happened first

Will Jen Kirkman speak out and how are all of Louis' angry guy fellow comedians going to treat this?

Though he apologized for his one time comment to me, I will no longer casually call Louie a friend. I can't support what I now KNOW are his contributions to the power dynamic in this business.

— JEN KIRKMAN (@JenKirkman) November 9, 2017

I was fucked over many times by Jezebel and the Daily Beast. People saying I said things I didn't say. If you want to choose not to believe me, great. But this is why women don't talk about ANYTHING. So I'm done. The end.

He also took a plea deal after he allegedly assaulted his girlfriend

i sortof wonder if part of why hes gone to some alternative distribution models (selling specials, horace & pete, etc) thru his own website or w/e is cuz he saw this coming & wanted to get as much $ as possible while he could; its incredibly foreseeable now that netflix, fx, etc may cut all ties

johnny crunch, Thursday, 9 November 2017 22:19 (six years ago) link

I know this is a sidetrack but everything I've read about the Arbuckle case points pretty conclusively towards his innocence

Number None, Thursday, 9 November 2017 22:43 (six years ago) link

yeah idk Anger didn't do a forensic analysis or anything

Οὖτις, Thursday, 9 November 2017 22:46 (six years ago) link

I wonder if what happens in episode 5 of the new season of One Mississippi is... well, "inspired by" doesn't seem like the right phrase, but... about Louis CK?

I also kinda feel like Louie's core audience is more likely to care about this stuff enough to abandon him than Gibson's.

Daniel_Rf, Thursday, 9 November 2017 22:55 (six years ago) link

does gibson really have a 'core audience' anyway

C.K. plays a successful Hollywood type whose 17-year-old daughter starts a sexual relationship with an esteemed director in his 60s (many critics out of TIFF likened the character, played by John Malkovich, to Woody Allen). C.K.’s character has to weigh his lifelong admiration for the character against his child’s innocence.

lol it's like.. does he? really? huh

if there's any type of story that really speaks to me it's stories about successful Hollywood types and their moral confusion.
