I like how the records on display in DJ T's room totally sum up his aesthetic. But Koze trumps him with Moroder staring out at you.

i'm a little bit terrified of the kind of porno they shoot at sven's place.

bleep (bleep), Wednesday, 20 September 2006 20:29 (seventeen years ago) link

Not surprising at all to see Hell a weightlifter: look at the Gigolo logo.

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Wednesday, 20 September 2006 22:01 (seventeen years ago) link

who is the dude with the marine girls as his most valuable record?

let me know when they want to shoot the NYC edition...

that would just be depressing/aggravating. it would either be shots of destitute degenerate record collectors with boxes of records cluttered around tiny apartments, with barely enough room for the photographer to get in, or expansive lofts from people clearly being supported externally.

this thread http://img83.imageshack.us/img83/1933/fivestarstb0.jpg by the way

I wanna see Cassy's pad! I bet she has like an enourmous shagpile rug and friendly labradors and a teasmade next to the turntables.

ten kebabs maaaaate (fandango), Wednesday, 20 September 2006 22:56 (seventeen years ago) link

Jesus christ, how do people get so much money to buy so many records AND have such beautiful homes.

As much as I love sleek, orderly, neat interiors, I have so much respect for Lawrence's place. Unpretencious and down to business.

I think it's a tie between ricardo and sven's respective homes for my favourite though

ILX "DJs Post your mixes" DJs and their living rooms. 3 2 1 go.

tylero (tylero), Wednesday, 20 September 2006 23:19 (seventeen years ago) link

Is anyone else kind of amused how few records are in Hell's room?

less records, more bowie/iron.

grady (grady), Wednesday, 20 September 2006 23:41 (seventeen years ago) link

I really had to laugh when I saw Sven Vaeths set-up - golden record players! Red designer speakers! The carpet! The way the golden record players are sunk into this obviously very expensive wood thing!

That console lokks like it came from here.

grady (grady), Wednesday, 20 September 2006 23:59 (seventeen years ago) link

someone did a book that was the hip-hop version of this last winter:

it looks like an expensive variation on one of those. the red oak ones on that page are FUG.

xp

i like ATA's

beautiful ethnic rug(s)
warholian multiple poster hanging
mix of old and new
very very few records
looks like a room you can actually do stuff in
could use a plant, though

the art ensemble of chicago house (vahid), Thursday, 21 September 2006 00:43 (seventeen years ago) link

ellen allien's is aesome!!

s1ocki (slutsky), Thursday, 21 September 2006 00:53 (seventeen years ago) link

funny that DJ T's, Ellen Allien's, AND Tiefschwarz' are all collections organized by Niko of Rotation

that's so taylrr (ken taylrr), Thursday, 21 September 2006 01:14 (seventeen years ago) link

my favorite thing about ata's: those big paintings turned toward the wall, so all you see is the frames and blank canvas backing... the intrigue! like, is dude a gallerist in his spare time??

philip sherburne (philip sherburne), Thursday, 21 September 2006 02:13 (seventeen years ago) link

DJ Koze's has a grotty old birkenstock in the forground. Ewww.

tylero (tylero), Thursday, 21 September 2006 02:33 (seventeen years ago) link

I would love to see Grime Cribs.

RoxyMuzak© (roxymuzak), Thursday, 21 September 2006 02:45 (seventeen years ago) link

tiefschwarz = looks exactly like what my dj friend did to his old bedroom when he was living in his parent's basement. obv doesn't spend much time at home

andre galluzi = tedious record nerd

dj koze = let's not give the guy too much credit for living in his parent's basement

dj t = extremely tedious record nerd

ellen allien = i hate it. all it's missing is a disgusting nagel print.

dj hell = terrible! dining in your sleeping space? "excuse me, helmut, i can't enjoy this spaghetti you made me, your weight bench reeks!" "pardon me while i get off the couch and bang my head on this low japanese lamp"

lawrence = i hate your music but your production space makes sense at least.

richie hawtin = excellent!! if it had an ethnic rug and more art i'd like it better than ATA's.

sven vath = looks like the waiting room of the parallax corporation

villalobos = rather sleazy looking. early 80s california coastal bachelor-pad chic. something tells me a lot of shit gets snorted off the glass table.

the art ensemble of chicago house (vahid), Thursday, 21 September 2006 02:46 (seventeen years ago) link

i imagine basic channel living together in a great cavernous building, like every room a gymnasium

a name means a lot just by itself (lfam), Thursday, 21 September 2006 02:53 (seventeen years ago) link

I can relate most to Hawtin's setup as it's quite similar to my lofty office space at home, and Villalobos' is most like my living room (although that's a stretch!).

Andrew (enneff), Thursday, 21 September 2006 02:56 (seventeen years ago) link

i like how tiefschwartz has those precariously balanced vertical record stacks just teetering on the brink.

hawtin's is pretty damn nice (nice gear too [/geek]. i'd like to see what those doors open out onto

dj hell = terrible! dining in your sleeping space? "excuse me, helmut, i can't enjoy this spaghetti you made me, your weight bench reeks!" "pardon me while i get off the couch and bang my head on this low japanese lamp"

hahahahahahaa

señor citizen (eman), Thursday, 21 September 2006 03:09 (seventeen years ago) link

tiefschwartz's is dismaying. it looks like a garage with a picture window.

okay, so after lurking Rhythmism, and still remaining clueless ...

which magazine is this from?!

also ... more. i want more pictures.

groove.

philip sherburne (philip sherburne), Thursday, 21 September 2006 05:07 (seventeen years ago) link

why did i even ask?

so, who's going to start translating Groove into English for the rest of us? i need more techno dorkiness in my own language.

Cameron Octigan (Cameron Octigan), Thursday, 21 September 2006 05:26 (seventeen years ago) link

Ellen's got an Arp 2600 sitting there!

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Thursday, 21 September 2006 06:23 (seventeen years ago) link

...and Koze has an MS-20 AND a Space Echo!

I like that rackmounted thing to the right of Hawtin's computer that looks like a control panel from a WWII submarine (maybe an old mixer?). A nice contrast to the sleek Apple modernism.

DougD (DougD), Thursday, 21 September 2006 06:26 (seventeen years ago) link

that's an Allen and Heath rotary mixer:

I love Villalobos' shelving for his records, arranged in 4 cubes of 16, 64 in all. Very computery.

Zachary Scott (Zach S), Friday, 29 September 2006 00:04 (seventeen years ago) link

hate to say it but those look like Ikea Expedits.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Friday, 29 September 2006 00:40 (seventeen years ago) link

you could be right 2 banks of expidits with one stacked on another. makes sense since there is a break in the middle. they look good!

jed_ (jed), Friday, 29 September 2006 00:45 (seventeen years ago) link

Those are Expedits. I wish my ceilings were high enough to stack two of them! I am slightly annoyed by the upper light panel not hanging straight in between the Expedit-stacks...
Looks like that piece of garment on the chair in Lawrence's appartment has the We Are Monster cover art :-)
Love the Bowie posters in Hell's room.

Jesus christ, how do people get so much money to buy so many records AND have such beautiful homes.

uh, making music is their livelihood, so did you expect them to have only a dozen records?

Nathalie (stevie nixed), Friday, 29 September 2006 11:08 (seventeen years ago) link

this thread is great! i agree with geeta, unsurprisingly.

Euai Kapaui (tracerhand), Friday, 29 September 2006 11:56 (seventeen years ago) link

for some reason i thought these would be more opulent.

That and you'd probably weep if you found out how cheap their beautiful rents were.

xpost-- yeah ya would.

also: it doesn't matter where the furniture is from. it matters what it looks like/feels like arranged in the particular space. ja?

and i woulda thought villalobos's pad would a been hella messy

Y'all youngbloods don't know NOTHING about this!

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Wednesday, 4 October 2006 04:13 (seventeen years ago) link

IRL, I'd probably be slumming it a bit with Lawrence's place, but I relate best to Andre Galuzzi's setup. I see a chair way off to the left (maybe there's an actual table next to it?) but otherwise there isn't any furniture other than stuff used to store music or equipment. I love the cage setup with the turntables, and he even "sorts" his records like I do -- a giant mess except for one separate pile for unheard records. The "sex is good" sign would have to go though.
