Chris Sale just got to 300 strikeouts in 209.1 innings. I was going to ask if that was the fastest to 300 k in a season but no, at the very least it looks like Pedro would have him beat (he had 313 Ks in 213.1 IP in 1999, so I'm sure he got there faster...)

and Moustakas just got the KC season home run record with his 37th, passing Steve Balboni! I'm glad the torch has been passed to another somewhat random dude.

oops sorry that was meant for the KC thread.

entirely possible that the sox will end up playing 9 games in a row against the astros

There's going to be a Ted Williams American Masters next summer--co-produced by David Ortiz's production company.

Could there be a blowing of the East? Is Bucky Dent coming out of retirement?

ice cream social justice (Dr Morbius), Saturday, 30 September 2017 02:55 (six years ago) link

I dunno but last night was the first time in recent memory that sox pitching didn't cough up the whole game in the first inning so I'm feeling optimistic about our chances in the NYY/HOU/CLE charnel house

farrell out

mookieproof, Wednesday, 11 October 2017 13:56 (six years ago) link

Would expect Jason Varitek to be a prominent candidate with the Red Sox. Cora, Ausmus and perhaps some coaches on the staff as well.

Dombrowski said Farrell was fired for reasons he won't disclose and that no level of team success would have prevented that.

— Pete Abraham (@PeteAbe) October 11, 2017

weird

mookieproof, Wednesday, 11 October 2017 15:44 (six years ago) link

woooh

from a fan's perspective dombrowski has given farrell every tool at the exact moment it was needed

illegal economic migration (Tracer Hand), Wednesday, 11 October 2017 15:48 (six years ago) link

gump:
Curious as to what you meant by Boston being behind the curve: do you mean the team’s analysis isn’t as advanced as in the past, or that they aren’t being listened to as much as in the past. If it’s the second, care to guess how many playoff apps with no series wins Dombrowski makes before being let go?

Dave Cameron:
Their analytics department has been one of the smallest, most underfunded in baseball for years, even before Dombrowski got there.
When everyone else was staffing up, hiring developers, and modernizing their infrastructure, the Red Sox stayed put and got passed by.

ice cream social justice (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 11 October 2017 19:28 (six years ago) link

idk how many quants are considered standard these days, but they do have james and brian bannister, so it's not like they're all 'fuck data'

mookieproof, Wednesday, 11 October 2017 19:36 (six years ago) link

winning the division but not winning in the playoffs reflects badly on.... dombrowksi? how does "gump" figure that one?

illegal economic migration (Tracer Hand), Wednesday, 11 October 2017 19:50 (six years ago) link

I don't know how much is underpinning those 2 'name' guys in analytics. DC seems to think not enough.

ice cream social justice (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 11 October 2017 19:55 (six years ago) link

They're still winning division titles so if you subscribe to "my shit doesn't work in the playoffs" then they're still doing most things right.

DD inherited Farrell from the Cherington regime and probably just wants to hire his own guy (whoever that might be). Losing in the first round two straight years gives him the perfect excuse to make a move.

NoTimeBeforeTime, Thursday, 12 October 2017 02:08 (six years ago) link

They were straightup lucky to win the division.

Ausmus is presumably D's guy.

ice cream social justice (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 12 October 2017 02:10 (six years ago) link

c'mon morbs they played out of their minds in September, just staying ahead of the Yanks by a nose

illegal economic migration (Tracer Hand), Thursday, 12 October 2017 06:48 (six years ago) link

the backbiting boston media seem to feel that price is the real problem
http://www.weei.com/articles/column/tomase-red-sox-manager-john-farrell-sacrificed-because-david-price-was-terrible

illegal economic migration (Tracer Hand), Thursday, 12 October 2017 11:22 (six years ago) link

That's an amazing read for any Jays fan. Price did nothing but say and do the right things for the few months he was here, and he's on the short list of Jays where the city just immediately fell in love with him. I believe he left without an offer from the club, so there wasn't even any fallout there--most fans were mad at management.

Quite a distance from there to here.

clemenza, Friday, 13 October 2017 22:18 (six years ago) link

tbf that article is a bit of an outlier and i don't know tomase's history

illegal economic migration (Tracer Hand), Saturday, 14 October 2017 00:39 (six years ago) link

tomase is not really the best guy to read but he's not the only guy writing versions of that story either.

there's a general narrative, probably true, that price doesn't want to be here and never did. and it's seriously poisoned things.

call all destroyer, Saturday, 14 October 2017 00:57 (six years ago) link

andy will know more than i do, but i've seen detroit writers express non-surprise at price being a dick to eckersley/the boston press

to a certain extent i'm skeptical of writers' complaints -- it's not the player's job to write your story for you with amazing quotes and insights -- but it seems like price's method of ingratiating himself with the team is to be an asshole to all outsiders. and people who *aren't* assholes don't need to do it that way

mookieproof, Saturday, 14 October 2017 04:46 (six years ago) link

All I recall is Price firing off a bunch of tweets when Lynn Henning referred to him as self-absorbed.

Roberto Spiralli, Monday, 13 November 2017 16:08 (six years ago) link

while i'm braggin' 2017 -- part of boras' spiel for jd martinez today was that a) defensive stats suck because they're all over the place from year to year and b) that mookie is so fucking good that he's wrecked the curve, making all but a few look comparatively terrible
