I haven't seen the demo, but Affinity's osx software is pretty nice.

Saw a photo of Grimes in front of an Elektron Machinedrum at the WWDC for some reason.

So I'm going to buy one of these new 27" iMacs. Probably swap the fusion drive for 512 SSD. Seems like upgrading RAM on an imac is easy? Thinking I'd go w/ 16gb then later on add 16 more myself, instead of paying all the extra for 32 from Apple. i7 much better than i5 to make it worth the price?

dan selzer, Monday, 5 June 2017 20:45 (six years ago) link

upgrading RAM on 27" - yes, easy (can't do on 21.5" iirc)

i7 instead of i5 - i don't think it'd make an appreciable diff unless you're encoding video or something

, Monday, 5 June 2017 20:50 (six years ago) link

i7 gets the better gfx as well though right?

stet, Monday, 5 June 2017 20:52 (six years ago) link

My parents want a new iMac - is the memory still user-installable on the 27 inch models?

El Tuomasbot (milo z), Monday, 5 June 2017 20:53 (six years ago) link

looks like all the 27" iMacs have discrete cards xp

, Monday, 5 June 2017 20:58 (six years ago) link

xp yes ram is user-installable on the 27's

Nhex, Monday, 5 June 2017 20:58 (six years ago) link

i'd take the i7 money and put it towards the graphics card tbh. i have the 1st gen retina imac with the graphics upgrade and certain graphical stuff still doesn't feel snappy (i.e. expose is pretty laggy)

, Monday, 5 June 2017 20:59 (six years ago) link

both the better 27" models have either i5 or i7, regardless of the graphics card.

dan selzer, Monday, 5 June 2017 21:00 (six years ago) link

\(^o^)/

the ghost of markers, Monday, 5 June 2017 21:02 (six years ago) link

but that's a good idea. If I go w/ i5 instead of i7, I can upgrade to the better video card w/ 8gig of RAM instead of the lesser one w/ 4gig.

I might just do it all though because fuck it.

dan selzer, Monday, 5 June 2017 21:02 (six years ago) link

lol "i feel like steve jobs"

𝔠𝔞𝔢𝔨 (caek), Monday, 5 June 2017 21:04 (six years ago) link

weird, the bump to i7 is 100 dollars LESS in the fanciest model.

dan selzer, Monday, 5 June 2017 21:04 (six years ago) link

what about changing the hard drive in these iMacs? Is that a total pain?

dan selzer, Monday, 5 June 2017 21:33 (six years ago) link

yes. involves cutting through glue with a pizza roller + giant suction cups

, Monday, 5 June 2017 21:33 (six years ago) link

do they use the samsung stick drives that aren't ssd? if not, they might by now

mh, Monday, 5 June 2017 21:35 (six years ago) link

I just bought the fucking thing.

It's going to replace a 2008 Mac Pro.

Let’s hope I don’t need another one of those.

the ghost of markers, Tuesday, 6 June 2017 01:08 (six years ago) link

Love too charge my keyboard!

the ghost of markers, Tuesday, 6 June 2017 01:08 (six years ago) link

when I got a new work laptop I decided to treat myself to a new keyboard for the desktop and I bought the microsoft surface wireless one

it is a pretty good copy of the apple one! it takes aaa batteries though, and they're supposed to last a year

mh, Tuesday, 6 June 2017 01:14 (six years ago) link

https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/surface/accessories/surface-keyboard

the only weirdness is that there's no spacing between the alpha/home&arrow/numpad areas

mh, Tuesday, 6 June 2017 01:15 (six years ago) link

oh yeah, and I had to break work's arcane "windows 7 is standard" policy for windows 10, because microsoft made it require bluetooth 4 which has the low energy profile. so it probably takes less energy than apple's?

LUCKILY, I have a brand new one of those things on the yet to be used desk in my bedroom! And I’m typing on one to all of you beautiful people right now. But they’re being replaced.

the ghost of markers, Tuesday, 6 June 2017 01:42 (six years ago) link

And the new ones are over a hundred dollars for a fucking keyboard.

the ghost of markers, Tuesday, 6 June 2017 01:42 (six years ago) link

And you have to charge them.

the ghost of markers, Tuesday, 6 June 2017 01:42 (six years ago) link

And I know there's going to be an update that will cheerfully say to me afterwards, "The device connected to the USB port cannot be recognized..."

pplains, Tuesday, 6 June 2017 02:20 (six years ago) link

xpost

thanks, mh - those are terrible. Maybe made on iOS 11 alpha?

Yeah, I set aside the one that came with my current imac when I got it 3-4 years ago and forgot about it until a couple of weeks ago. Glad I've got a spare.

Given the lack of ports on anything Mac today I'm okay with a wireless keyboard. I used one of the Logitech ones for a long time.

the ghost of markers, Tuesday, 6 June 2017 05:09 (six years ago) link

Stop it!

I've got a Logitech at work, but it doesn't have the little green light in the caps key, which I miss much more than I would.

pplains, Tuesday, 6 June 2017 05:57 (six years ago) link

Than I thought I would... Too busy looking at markers' keyboard while typing that.

pplains, Tuesday, 6 June 2017 05:57 (six years ago) link

ugh $129, bullshit. i loved the wired one, but my newest iMac came by default with the short, number pad-less bt version

Nhex, Tuesday, 6 June 2017 08:55 (six years ago) link

for $129 just get this (i have it and it's great)

Fun part about spending tons of money on something is it leads you to need to spend tons more money on other things. Now also looking at an OWC 4 bay thunderbolt enclosure. Fun times.

dan selzer, Tuesday, 6 June 2017 16:42 (six years ago) link

I'm thinking about getting an external Thunderbolt GPU thingy :(
