thank you. you all are really kind and supportive and i take that for granted way too often. i had kind of a clear moment the other day and realized that i am depressed again and have been for quite a while, and that while i used to be able to append the "functional-" prefix to most of my issues, the sadness and just the weight of being awake has started to overwhelm the ability that i once had to cope and push through it. have about 5 larger projects going and have spent tons of time thinking and working on them all, but i have been unable to make myself finish any of them. there is this big gap between what i know i should do vs what i can make myself do. so, i think a lot of my issues and complaining and general dread of living for the last several months have grown from the same rotten root. i'm going to try to work on it.

tomboto i have to admit i've thought about it before but other than my fear of being one of those patreon accounts with 3 supporters that quietly ends with an apology note after 70 days, i would also want to have something really cool and unique that i could offer to supporters that they couldn't get elsewhere, and i don't know what that is. but also it's just all too plausible to imagine that the only people that would chip in would be my sister and really nice people on ilx, whereas i would actually love to only take money from strangers and do things for friends for free, always. there's some weird hybrid of puritanical self-reliance bullshit in my brain's situation room that makes me turn away from taking physical compensation from friends or family, like it feels painful even though it should just feel supportive. again, like that cognitive gap i mentioned above, i know the thought is wrong and why, but i can't make myself stop believing in it.

bluuuuuurgh! so really i just need to finish a goddamn project and get at least a fucking part time job

Would support.

For those of us working jobs whose creativity is limited, the idea of using some of the money earned to increase the amount of stuff in the world which enriches us outside of work is a no-brainer. I buy my friends' art, I see my friends' movies, I buy my friends' music, let me support your stuff too.

Your gifs bring me such indescribable joy every time I take mushrooms that it's honestly kinda criminal that I haven't paid you yet.

Fetchboy, Sunday, 4 June 2017 23:24 (six years ago) link

ha!! that is really funny, thanks for sharing that. hope i never freaked you the fuck out! and MatthewK, that is a good argument. i will think about it. my sense is that successful patreons are usually tied to some sort of specific kind of project or outcome, or at least a nice reward for a certain subscription level. whereas right i'm usually working on a hodgepodge of barely related things - a projection installation, GIFs, a weirdass video short, this motion sensor/raspberry pi/video loop thing i spent forever working on and then haven't touched for weeks, painting every goddamn zero in a book of random of digits. i'd like to think that it would work but i think the only uniting theme in the last few dozen things i've pursued is that at one time or another i've thought "see, the cool thing about this is that it's the complete opposite of what you would expect to succeed!", and the strategy seems to work as well as hitting on 19 does in blackjack. i'd like to be able to do something special and unique for someone who is willing to chip in. maybe i could turn back time to ILX 2008 and offer to make gifs out of people's photos or something?

at any rate, thank you all for picking me up a little bit here and sorry for continuous oversharing and bleakness. i'm gonna try to think of the possibilities here instead of obsessing over all the reasons it won't work.

playing around with photoshop selection lines has been fun because selecting anything creates an 8-frame animation. i kept swinging and missing here but i feel like there's something really neat you could do with it.

calming

^^ really.

KM, have you put any further thought into a Patreon thingy? I cannot tell you how fucking pissed off I still am abt BoingBoing stealing yr gif. You so not deserve to live in a world where most creative things are being compensated, however poorly at times, but images and 'lol gifs' on Teh Internetz seem to be excluded from this ethos entirely.

I would take to the streets demanding credit and $$$ where it's due for talented people like yourself. Please don't give up on your dream.

I was idly wondering today what 3rd party screensaver channels were available for Roku -- it turns out there are a couple hundred, anywhere from free to $1 or $2 one-time purchases to $5/month subscriptions. I thought to myself "ZS's gifs on shuffle play would make a hell of a screensaver, I'd pay actual money for that," so there you go. 13 million active monthly accounts, according to Roku.

hardcore dilettante, Monday, 19 June 2017 04:13 (six years ago) link

i've been on a raft in a river since last friday (on purpose, i feel i should add), so just seeing these really supportive messages. thank you! it was an old school high school friends kind of trip and it quickly became apparent that almost all of us are in some sort of crisis mode. we are all there for each other, but also not 100% there because we're dealing with our own shit. comforting and terrifying all the same.

if i could make any sort of money off of roku screensavers that would be a hilarious and amazing turn of events. i'll see if there's any sort of open submission process. on the patreon thing i've decided that i'd only feel comfortable with it if i had some sort of larger scale project i was working towards. in the optimistic version of the future a few years from now i'd be in the midst of a longer narrative video (like evil guide dog but not at all like evil guide dog i guess), like 20% done, and launching the patreon/kickstarter whatever thing would be a way to get support to get the other 80% done. or something like that. but right now i don't really have anything like that in the works. floating out there on the river, like the graduate in the pool, or like the sad guy in ferris bueller in the pool, 18-24 beers deep, i realized i really need to figure out what that larger scale project is and just start working on it. i mean, duh, but sometimes this kind of shit takes me years to work out. better late than never, i guess. anyway thank you for the support as always and i plan on bumbling my way toward the light or wahtever

I wonder if some kind of home internet-connected (or Sd-card?) projector installation could be a thing. When I saw Eno's 77 Million Paintings I was like, "fuck yeah, I'd dedicate a room in my house to this."

bumbling my way toward the light or wahtever (hardcore dilettante), Tuesday, 20 June 2017 13:18 (six years ago) link

the CPU part of it would be pretty easy, i think - it would be pretty easy to set up a raspberry pi device to send video to a projector. or there are projectors that just have storage included, like you're saying. the tricky part would be semi-permanently installing a projector and/or objects in a room. it's one thing if it's just playing a video on a blank wall, so that if it's jostled a bit it doesn't really affect things too much. but when you project onto actual objects, moving anything by even a small amount can really mess things up. in my only IRL exhibition success story i was lucky to have a team of pros on hand that just handled everything with the rigging of the projector so that it was solid as a rock. but in my own living room experiments my projector is typically balanced on a pile of magazines in the most precarious fashion imaginable. i'd love to get better at the installation process of all this but i need to find an affordable studio space first.

i spent way the fuck too long on this, "The Last Coffee"

http://68.media.tumblr.com/f0247a9ec04c8dab24b75e2b24a01371/tumblr_otq2c1igCZ1qdmmiqo1_500.gif

originally it was going to be the first gif in an epic series, but after spending like 20 hours on the first one alone, i abandoned the idea. so instead, here's my rough draft of what would have happened and you just have to use your imagination on what it might have looked like (better that way than if i actually done it, trust me)

1 the last coffee crawls and spills drops as it goes (see GIF above)

2 and 3 the last coffee continues to wander slowly, becoming a little bit more empty with each successive GIF. reveal title: “The Last Coffee"

4 coffee finds a sink drain and contemplates about the meaning of the drain

5 coffee begins to pour its final drops down the drain. title changes to “THE LOST COFFEE"

6 a dripping sound in the distance makes coffee stand up

7 pursues the source of the dripping noise

8 the coffee meets the coffeemaker

9 close up of coffee dripping into the carafe

10 close up of coffee man. his world will never be the same

11 the last coffee gets a refill

12 the coffeemaker begins to fill up another cup of coffee.

13 the so-called last coffee witnesses the birth of another coffee. again, his mind is blown

14 several more coffees are born

15 the new community of coffee emerges. title changes to “THE LAST OF THE COFFEEs"

16 co-mingling of coffees, garden of eden style perfection and joy and innocence

17 a human suddenly appears and grabs a coffee

18 human blows to cool it down

19 close up of extreme terror on coffee's face

20 chugging it down, coffee upside down, legs kicking frantically in air

terrifying moments in everyday life, brushing teeth by candlelight edition. i'm glad that you think it's horrifying! the humans in the story are just going to be doing normal things but their mere existence should completely freak the coffee person out.
