the idea that anyone on ilx thought the Paris accord would save us from extinction is a strawman

Paris accords are mostly a sliver of hope. It's mostly theater and self-congratulation, but we need fictions and hope to get through the day.

I like Rebecca Solnit but she is wrong to think Trump ever expected his lifelong rivals, Manhattan snobs, to stop mocking him when he became president. He knows he is widely mocked, as much as he can be said to know anything. He thrives on it.

Trump believes and expects a lot of dumb things, this is one i can believe too. we're talking about a historic-level idiot here. i do like that a lot of dudes are explaining to Rebecca Solnit how she's wrong though.

it's been painfully unfunny all day - it's a typo. big fucking deal. even trump laughed at himself about it, that's how innocuous it is, the greatest manchild in the world can even brush it off.

This this this. I'm in fucking Basque Country and it got mentioned today. Had to look up what the fuss was about. Trump being 'Oh! I made a spelling eros, see whut I did dere' as the least funny person in the world makes this even more unbearable.

'And you know what? Here comes the KICKER!!!!'
'Whatwhatwhatwhattttt????'
'He made a spelling mistake!'
'You are jo-king! He did?!'
'He did. In a tweet. POTUS made a spelling error. In a tweet.'
'Oh. My. God. Hahahahahaha. I'm snapchatting it right now.'
'Hahahaha!'
'Hahahahaha!'

^^ Some severe normalization of the last person deserving normalization right there.

I don't know, writing that tweet off as "he spelled wrong give the guy a break" seems like another big step toward new normal for standards of Presidential communication.

But maybe by surrendering burdensome "leader of the free world" role, the office can just move straight into memes and fart soundz-only

It's not like that tweet mattered in any way, but characterizing it as just a spelling error or a typo seems kind of weird. Insert any correctly spelled word in place of "covfefe" and the tweet would still be totally incoherent and meaningless.

You're right, she can never be wrong about anything because of her most famous work, and in fact all her opinions are valid because of her gender, great she has people to intervene and stop her being patronised.

anyway the trump tweet from last night was both hilarious and troubling, maybe more hilarious because it was troubling. i mean this is the world we live in now, we have to get our sick laughs somewhere. though my own reaction was skewing less "omglol" and more towards "good christ we're all doomed."

CLEVELAND, Ohio - President Donald Trump's team is already working on his re-election campaign by launching a monthly subscription box service, similar to a Birchbox, according to multiple reports.

CNN reporter Betsy Klein tweeted out an email from the campaign Monday afternoon to announce the "Big League Box."

Dave Levinthal with the Center for Public Integrity pointed out that the boxes, which will go out starting in June, will cost $69 per month. (EDITOR'S NOTE: NICE)

"Bill Clinton managed to run the country on a nightly allotment of five or six hours. Slick Willy had a penchant for staying up until the wee hours and it was not uncommon for him to rouse a staffer with whom he could burn the midnight oil.

Unsurprisingly, another well-known insomniac, was Abraham Lincoln (the Civil War will do that). And President Obama counts himself among the night owls, relying on a 7a.m. wake up call to get his day started."

I feel like Trump threatening to pull out of the Paris accord is more or less just a cry for attention. He doesn't give a fuck one way or the other about the issue, much less understand it. But he does love suddenly having CEOs calling him up desperate to talk to him, everybody pleading w him, people fighting for his attention/jockeying for position to "influence" him. He lives for this.
