i mean i guess it's not out of the question that trump's object-permanence is so stunted he forgets about spicer whenever spicer's not around and none of the rest of the entourage bothered to remind him

Two additional senior White House officials said the Vatican was very "strict" on the number of people who would be allowed to join the talks.

But previous administration officials who helped orchestrate meetings between US presidents and the Pope said that high-level Catholic staffers who expressed interest in attending the papal sessions were regularly accommodated. During his two equivalent sessions at the Vatican with Francis and his predecessor Pope Benedict, President Barack Obama was joined by his press secretaries, Jay Carney and Robert Gibbs, along with senior-level national security and West Wing aides.

It will never stop being horrifying that a state whose entire population wouldn't crack the top 50 metro areas (or top 10 actual cities IIRC) has such importance.

Every small population state has an outsized importance because of how the Senate is organized, but this race is only super important because it's a tightly contested race in a normally deep red state/district and because it's a harbinger of what could happen in 2018.

Meantime, what not to do

http://www.politico.com/story/2017/05/25/manafort-trump-russia-advise-238803

Months after the FBI began examining Paul Manafort as part of a probe into ties between President Donald Trump’s team and Russia, Manafort called Trump’s chief of staff Reince Priebus to push back against the mounting controversy, according to four people familiar with the call.

It was about a week before Trump’s inauguration, and Manafort wanted to brief Trump’s team on the alleged inaccuracies in a recently released dossier of memos written by a former British spy for Trump’s opponents that alleged compromising ties between Russia, Trump and Trump’s associates, including Manafort.

http://www.politico.com/story/2017/05/25/russia-white-house-staff-238802

A White House spokeswoman said Bannon and Priebus returned to work on the president’s legislative agenda. But the pair have held high-level meetings and phone calls with a hope of securing outside lawyers and consultants to handle what they fear will be a months- or years-long slog, according to White House officials.

Top aides have begun asking White House lawyers and outside advisers how long such a probe would take, who should hire lawyers and how to preserve evidence. Trump’s legal team will be headed by his longtime attorney Marc Kasowitz, but whether other lawyers are in — or out — has become something of a parlor game in Washington.

A senior administration official described “paralysis” setting in as more of the White House’s time and resources are consumed by the Russia probe. With so much energy being directed toward the investigation, this person said, it is becoming harder to see how any policy goals get accomplished.

Every day in every way, it's definitely incompetence beating out malevolence.

But Pence would prove to be the easy conduit between the WH and Congress oh wait

http://www.cnn.com/2017/05/25/politics/pence-tax-lobbying-sparks-hill-backlash/index.html

Vice President Mike Pence's attempt to peel away House Republicans to support the White House's tax plan spurred a backlash among a critical bloc of conservative lawmakers Wednesday, Hill sources said.

Pence pressed Republican Study Committee Chairman Mark Walker to poll his members to see if they would split with House Speaker Paul Ryan and support the White House tax plan -- which lacks a border tax that is the centerpiece of the House GOP proposal.

But in a flurry of exchanges Wednesday afternoon, Republican Study Committee members turned on the White House, saying they should not blindly accept whatever President Donald Trump is selling, the sources told CNN.

NYT:

Ben Carson, the head of the Department of Housing and Urban Development, faced an intense backlash on Wednesday for calling poverty “a state of mind.” Mr. Carson, who oversees a department that handles housing for millions of low-income Americans, made the comments during a radio interview on Tuesday with Armstrong Williams, a friend and conservative media personality. During the talk, Mr. Carson, a retired neurosurgeon, said he thought some people were poor because of their outlook on life.

“I think poverty to a large extent is also a state of mind,” he said, according to a transcript of the interview that was released on Wednesday. “You take somebody that has the right mind-set, you can take everything from them and put them on the street, and I guarantee in a little while they’ll be right back up there.” He added that helping people may not better their lives. “You take somebody with the wrong mind-set, you can give them everything in the world — they’ll work their way right back down to the bottom,” Mr. Carson said.
