Trump, May 2017: 100 days of [unintelligible]

obviously Trump's draconian budget fuckery is the far bigger issue here, but this is just another example of disingenuous messaging that continues to irk me because almost all Democratic politicians play into it:

After The Washington Post reported some of the cuts Sunday evening, Senate Minority Leader Charles E. Schumer (D-N.Y.) said Trump was pulling “the rug out from so many who need help.”

“This budget continues to reveal President Trump’s true colors: His populist campaign rhetoric was just a Trojan horse to execute long-held, hard-right policies that benefit the ultra wealthy at the expense of the middle class,” he said.

These social welfare cuts are not, by and large, going to affect the middle class. They affect the poor, but hardly anyone in Washington ever wants to utter that four-letter word. I know these people have elections to win and so they're always going to target their message to the groups that are more likely to vote, but I can't help but think this rhetoric just contributes to the sense that the poor can be ignored, which leads us right back to bullshit like these social-program cuts.

Sunday NYT had a pretty biting article from a psychologist explaining that it's unfair to compare Trump to a four-year-old because of a laundry list of ways in which your average four-year-old is a more fully-rounded and emotionally-mature human being than our president.
