So he's at least 10x as guilty as Hillary but he won't go to jail. That's a swizz.

Stevolende, Thursday, 18 May 2017 15:54 (seven years ago) link

well actually considering his "if I did a tenth of what she did" line he's going to jail 100 times?

frogbs, Thursday, 18 May 2017 15:54 (seven years ago) link

Does Flynn refusing to honor the subpoena mean he's been promised a pardon?

Guayaquil (eephus!), Thursday, 18 May 2017 15:57 (seven years ago) link

hahaha, i was so busy looking forward to the fallout from pence's pardon that i didn't even think about the idea that trump could pardon him right now. boy, that would fuck things right up, wouldn't it? i wonder if he's thinking right now "well, i can just pardon myself, right?"

This was from a couple of days ago but could be relevant

And when they are stonewalled by a witness, there's often little the committees can do to force quick compliance. Congressional subpoenas, according to lawyer Stanley Brand, sometimes amount to little more than “a piece of paper.”

“The problem is enforcing them,” said Brand, a senior counsel at Akin Gump who has represented individuals under investigation by Congress. “They can go the civil route in the Senate, but that’s a lengthy process. That can take a year or more. They could go under the criminal statute, but that’s sort of unavailing because by the time that gets decided, it’ll be the next Congress.”

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 18 May 2017 16:01 (seven years ago) link

This said, given the increasing scrutiny and interest, kinda hard for me to imagine they'll let him skate.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 18 May 2017 16:03 (seven years ago) link

I'm starting to think that Trump, for once, will not easily wriggle his way out of this jam

frogbs, Thursday, 18 May 2017 16:04 (seven years ago) link

Ya think?

Trump is being urged by advisers inside and outside the WH to hire a new lawyer to help navigate latest issues https://t.co/CN2dttW2gx

I hadn't realized that McGahn's uncle (or one of them) represented Trump for a long while back in the 70s/80s, IIRC. So another case of misplaced loyalty, I suspect.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 18 May 2017 16:07 (seven years ago) link

So who is councelling the president these days?

Punnet of the Grapes (Tom D.), Thursday, 18 May 2017 16:09 (seven years ago) link

nugent?

Looking forward to the irascible Michael Cohen representing the irrepressible Donald Trump during this time of upheaval.

Speaking of whom: Why did Donald Trump’s attorney tweet a picture of his daughter in a bra?

Only Morbius's doctors know for sure.

I still can't believe he's going to do a press conference later this afternoon. AND is currently having lunch off-the-record with a bunch of news anchors.

the initial tweet was skeevy but the "Jealous?" remark five minutes later ratcheted it up a hundredfold. whats up with this administration wanting to fuck their own daughters???

Trumps administration is like a Shaggs record - everyone failing in some new unexpected way

Violet Jynx, Thursday, 18 May 2017 16:25 (seven years ago) link

re: Chaffetz: he came in as basically a proto-Tea-Party guy in 2008, primarying a well-established Republican incumbent by running to his right. His district also went for Trump in 2016 by 47% (McMullin got 24, Clinton 23). Can't imagine a place like that is going to cough up anybody much better, but maybe things have chilled out slightly. Bizarrely, Utah has no procedure on the books for filling a vacated Congressional seat, and there are different plans being thrown around.

― Violet Jynx

i don't know about that, but i think it says something that i'm trying to imagine what it would be like to have a fermented bean curd as president and how it would stack up to trump. because i will say i think it would be easier for republicans to defend having a fermented bean curd as president than it is for them to defend trump.
