coast guard commencement speech roundup: http://taskandpurpose.com/trump-coast-guard-graduation-speech

you get some occasional (and usually completely ineffectual) grandstanding against his party on some nat'l security shit (usually either motivated by privacy concerns or isolationism)

Oh, heavens. If Dem leaders did a little 'grandstanding' on some NS shit or privacy concerns, maybe i'd have a tad more respect for the party.

2018 democratic congressional majority doesn't indict benedict donald and the lot of the koch/mercer/bradley/scaife/olin/coors/ALEC traitors in exchange for passing medicare / social security for all forever or gtfo

Democrats will waste this leverage, guaranteed.

don't think we're gonna have a congressional majority that soon, even with the crazy shit going on now

Per @FEC filing: VP @mike_pence has formed a new political action committee, the "Great America Committee" https://t.co/oykOemLmn2

iirc something like +4 D is consistent with taking back the house?

you mean like when Pelosi voted against extending the Patriot Act

why do I even bother

xp

Οὖτις, Wednesday, 17 May 2017 18:19 (seven years ago) link

yeah the house is the doable one since everyone is always up for re-election. but iirc the 2018 senate outlook is much bleaker? i'd love to be wrong

k3vin k., Wednesday, 17 May 2017 18:19 (seven years ago) link

senate is v unlikely bc way more dem seats up than rep

Mordy, Wednesday, 17 May 2017 18:21 (seven years ago) link

Dems have p much no chance of taking the Senate in 2018, much less getting the 2/3rds required for impeachment. Which is why Trump will not be removed from office - the GOP in the Senate votes won't be there.

Οὖτις, Wednesday, 17 May 2017 18:22 (seven years ago) link

currently we're looking at a likely scenario of the GOP losing the House, which would mean impeachment proceedings that would then die in the Senate. Things could change, of course.

if house flips that kills the GOP legislative agenda dead at which point if trump is completely toxic the calculus for keeping him / impeaching him changes. esp if they're killed in 2018 and get scared that it's bc of trump. better to rip that band-aid off.

Mordy, Wednesday, 17 May 2017 18:24 (seven years ago) link

it seems significantly more likely that he'll just drop dead as opposed to resigning or getting tossed out.

I can't remember if in early 2005 both House and Senate looked good for Dems. Someone give me data. I thought the House in 2006 was a given, but the S3nate a surprise.

these guys don't do long-term planning. well, McConnell does I guess. But impeaching him with votes from his own party won't really do any good for their legislative agenda either - it will be an admission of defeat

Senate in 2006 flipped largely because George Allen called SR Sidarth "macaca" on camera.

any republican senator who votes to remove trump from office is killing their future senatorial prospects dead. i'm not saying we won't get to the point where 20 or so republicans are willing to never eat lunch in dc again in order to get rid of him, but they have a pretty strong disincentive to throw the bum out.

a likely scenario of the GOP losing the House

I just don't think it's that likely. But a razor-thin majority that helps keep Paul Ryan from doing anything is pretty plausible.

Fun fact: Lieberman has been operating under a curse that compels him to answer "yes" to anything ever asked of him. This is why he ate a tire last week, and was on the sidewalk offering free foot rubs the other day.
