don't get me wrong it will be a contentious process and a nailbiter and the Dems will throw every obstructive move they can think of but the math hasn't fundamentally changed quite yet.

Forget math! There is now a credible accusation from the former head of the FBI, however indirectly for now, alleging interference. If anything I'd say this was almost designed to keep McCabe right where he is.

To DJP: best explanation I can give is willful blindness by millions of republicans.

Financial Times now confirming:

https://www.ft.com/content/f217fff1-16d0-3b40-b01d-0b7f9924e8ca

Mr Comey shared the memo — part of an extensive effort to document his interactions with the president — with other top FBI officials, according to an associate who confirmed the existence of the memo and several quotes it contained.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 16 May 2017 22:15 (seven years ago) link

are you saying Trump may just not nominate anybody for the time being?

Ooh good more breaking news alerts. He asked Comey to kill the Flynn investigation, it seems

[Charles II of Spain](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charles_II_of_Spain🕸), thanks to Spanish Hapsburg inbreeding, is another contender for a colossally stupid leader from history.

I'm having a hard time finding similar contenders among democracies. Ideologically hobbled, sure, but just plain incompetent? Elections usually weed them out.

Pope Leo X was sorta elected and colossally dim. So hedonistic he spent all the cash in the Vatican and failed to realise that Protestantism was rapidly being born all about him

This email just went out from the Trump campaign (which, remember, is already up and running for 2020):

Washington Post:

https://www.washingtonpost.com/world/national-security/notes-made-by-former-fbi-director-comey-say-trump-pressured-him-to-end-flynn-probe/2017/05/16/52351a38-3a80-11e7-9e48-c4f199710b69_story.html?utm_term=.ce4b9d8b43dd

According to a set of notes written by Comey following a February meeting with the president, Trump brought up the counterintelligence investigation into Flynn and urged Comey to drop the probe in the wake of the national security adviser’s resignation.

“I hope you can let this go,’’ Trump said, according to the Comey notes, which were described by associates. Comey’s written account of the meeting is two pages long and highly detailed, the associates said.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 16 May 2017 22:18 (seven years ago) link

---> @KenDilanianNBC just reported that Comey "plans to go public" about the memos he kept from his meetings with Trump.

Right now, I'm saying that a lot of people -- Cornyn and Gowdy clearly ahead of the curve here -- are looking at the past seven days, and now today, and thinking "Poison fucking chalice." And whoever gets named is about to run into a buzzsaw.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 16 May 2017 22:19 (seven years ago) link

Maybe there could be some hypothetical plausible deniability if he hasn't boasted that he'd been thinking about Comey and Russia when he fired him. Also, if he was not a compulsive liar.

Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 16 May 2017 22:20 (seven years ago) link

With President Hapsburg going on tour, should we take a poll whether more stupid news will result from domestic matters or foreign?

This is it right? Obstruction of justice.

def a turning point. Up to now there's been "there may be evidence" sorta stuff, but this is real evidence of an actual crime, one that has felled previous presidents.

Domestic news is going to get out of hand while he's away, and he's going to crazy trying to keep up with it abroad. So crazy that his speech - on Islam - in Saudi - could be one for the ages.

So both, I guess? Xp

stet, Tuesday, 16 May 2017 22:26 (seven years ago) link

This is it, right?

It would help if The People did a bit of pushing on Congress about now.

rick wilson, unashamed to repeat and laugh at his own jokes

The usual CW in DC would be that cancelling the trip acknowledges that Comey's memos constitute an existential crisis for the administration, while going on the trip 'looks presidential'.

heading to a non-extradition country might be a smart move for trump right now tbh

He's so dumb he'd probably run to New Jersey.

was looking forward to the alpha move of trump blaming saudis for "radical. islamic. terrorism." but I dont think thats gonna happen now..

usual CW applies to Trump via his advisors. I grant he is capable of blowing them off, but I think he'll go, then undermine himself further through ill-considered tweets and veiled remarks during photos ops

A is for (Aimless), Tuesday, 16 May 2017 22:32 (seven years ago) link

Well the saudi regime absolutely is to blame for the rise of Salafism.

Post reports memo was shared w/ DOJ. If Sessions & Rosenstein knew this when they signed off on his firing, their positions aren't tenable. https://t.co/2Sb7eQtJIU

perhaps under the old rules. we'll be seeing soon what rules apply as of today. but sessions "recusal" seems more phony all the time.

TPM:

With the latest revelation – that President Trump straight up asked James Comey to end the Flynn investigation – this is starting to feel like a prize fight where one boxer just took three straight punches to the head. It’s hard to know how much longer this can go on. But I suspect the answer is this: a lot longer.

Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 16 May 2017 22:36 (seven years ago) link
