How in the world does something like that get leaked? Aren't there just a finite number of people in the room with him when he's having these meetings?

Josh in Chicago, Monday, 15 May 2017 21:42 (seven years ago) link

for what it's worth, i think that mike pence is as much of a shit show as donald trump and just because (unlike trump) he has a coherent agenda doesn't mean that he will be able to accomplish his aims any more effectively than trump. especially considering a) an impeachment trial if started later this year would likely last well throughout 2018, casting a shadow over the mid-terms, and b) a GOP that just impeached its own president would be reeling, not in any position to make the sweeping changes that the administration surely would like to make

meekseeks mill (voodoo chili), Monday, 15 May 2017 21:43 (seven years ago) link

according to current and former U.S. officials

According to former U.S. officials? Why would someone tell them, since they clearly weren't there? I wonder if this means something bad or wrong already happened because of his leak. How else would it get out?

Josh in Chicago, Monday, 15 May 2017 21:44 (seven years ago) link

I see impeachment chatter on twitter from the crankiest cranks of the left, berniebros, Sarah Silverman's celeberal crew etc.

I imagine somebody in the room briefed the intelligence community, saying "hey guys, the russians know *x piece of information* now because trump couldn't keep his mouth shut," and that someone in the IC leaked the leak (as it were)

meekseeks mill (voodoo chili), Monday, 15 May 2017 21:44 (seven years ago) link

it's leak-ception

meekseeks mill (voodoo chili), Monday, 15 May 2017 21:45 (seven years ago) link

I think there's truth to what goole is saying.

But i also don't think a trump impeachment would consolidate consensus neoliberalism. I think it might fatally damage the Republicans -- if Trump is really impeached, even convicted of some kind of criminal misconduct, the idea that his horribleness is "fake news" would collapse -- creating some sort of unpredictable effect, maybe opening a space for the left as dems can no longer blame Republican opposition for their shittiness.

Sanders/Clinton was a productive battle of ideas in the end. It's the Republicans who keep us suspended in uselesness and lunacy

would tend to agree with this -- an actually successful impeachment or resignation would cast such a pall over the GOP that i doubt that they'd get much support in the midterms

this thread has a real problem w the line-drawing on the left, the fact that these sorts of fractures get re-litigated on a near daily basis here is sad. when I say crankiest of cranks on the left I was referring to personal friends who were all Bernie-stans re-tweeting Louise Mensch or whatever (Sarah Silverman is not a friend of mine but I do follow her cuz sometimes she is funny)

Fun!

https://www.buzzfeed.com/jimdalrympleii/trump-highly-classified-information-russians

Two US officials who were briefed on Trump’s disclosures last week confirmed to BuzzFeed News the veracity of the Post report, with one official noting that “it’s far worse than what has already been reported.”

One of the officials said the Senate Intelligence Committee was also briefed on Trump’s disclosures.

Nothing is going to fatally damage the Republican Party because there is no opposition party that is organized enough with large enough coffers to bankroll its candidates in elections to take its place. I will change my tune if Libertarian candidates receive measurably more support in the midterm election but until that happens, Republicans are going nowhere.

One two three!

Dianne Feinstein exits Senate subway and is surrounded by reporters. "Oh my goodness. What's happened?" (She hasn't seen the WaPo story.)

— Haley Byrd (@byrdinator) May 15, 2017

I wonder how many GOP senators will say they're troubled before calling for more information.

— Haley Byrd (@byrdinator) May 15, 2017

Lindsey Graham tells us the WaPo report is "troubling" if true. I ask him if it's only troubling. "Yeah, because I don't know if it's true."

did 2010 and 2014 teach you nothing? "Fatally" is an adverb you never want to use about the GOP's political opportunities unless it refers to how the party regards gays, blacks, and Muslims.

the Rain Man of nationalism. (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 15 May 2017 22:13 (seven years ago) link

I'd kinda say that a president's 'right' to leak classified information ends where the consequences of his leaking it will result in material damage to American lives and well-being. There's this thing called due process of the law which is supposed to supersede a president's authority. We don't need no stinking monarchy.

A is for (Aimless), Monday, 15 May 2017 22:13 (seven years ago) link

Per that point

Likely this was leaked because an operation was just blown by POTUS or US spooks don't want to be on the hook for when Russia derails it.

what do we have now? a supposedly "destroyed" senate and a right-winger in scalia's spot

what could we have had, a year ago? the same "destroyed" senate and a liberal in scalia's spot.

mcconnell dared the democrats to do something against truly unprecedented blocking of constitutional process, and they backed down.

democrats made their stand against gorsuch (admirable) and mcconnell duly nuked the place and here we are.

yes i'm more mad at democrats for this turn of events because i expect maximum bullshit from the GOP always, and dems appear to have learned nothing from the last 8 years, or were happy not to learn because they have other goals in mind than mine.
