Perhaps some more details to come

A big exclusive: @AndersonCooper has Sally Yates' first TV interview since she was fired... it'll air Tuesday night on @AC360

If she can't discuss anything meaningful under oath wat is the point of anticipating an interview on CNN xp

ein Sexmonster (Jimmy The Mod Awaits The Return Of His Beloved), Monday, 15 May 2017 18:40 (seven years ago) link

I predict Sally Yates will be the very picture of restrained professionalism in that interview, but she will very, very understatedly demonstrate once more that Trump is an egoistic, poorly informed, impulsive incompetent with no respect for law or the Constitution. Since we already know that, it will still disappoint us all.

what a surprise

For most anyone in government discussing such matters with an adversary would be illegal. As president, Trump has broad authority to declassify government secrets, making it unlikely that his disclosures broke the law.

mookieproof, Monday, 15 May 2017 21:07 (seven years ago) link

hey if the president does it it's not a crime amirite

Οὖτις, Monday, 15 May 2017 21:08 (seven years ago) link

xp I was thinking his popularity was lower and wondering what he'd done to get some added popularity. Can't remember him doing anything remotely positive in ages but I'm not a Republican so maybe they're looking at things differently.
Were people actually pro the trumpcare bill?

Stevolende, Monday, 15 May 2017 21:09 (seven years ago) link

something like 20% iirc

Οὖτις, Monday, 15 May 2017 21:10 (seven years ago) link

in all honesty I'm surprised this is the first time we've heard a story like this

so wouldn't he have to actually declassify information and further alienate our allies, or what...? I can't imagine a world where sharing top-secret info with hostile governments is...uh...perfectly fine?

frogbs, Monday, 15 May 2017 21:13 (seven years ago) link

Russia is "an adversary"?

1) eliminate the estate tax / upper income tax / enable the job creators

2) run the government like a business

3) surrender to the kremlin

where have you been

Οὖτις, Monday, 15 May 2017 21:15 (seven years ago) link

doesn't need to be pointed out but lol @ this in context of Trump's entire campaign basically being "HILLARY CAN'T BE TRUSTED WITH CLASSIFIED INFO!!"

frogbs, Monday, 15 May 2017 21:16 (seven years ago) link

i do genuinely believe that trump is stupid enough to spill even the most classified info as a brag, but the fact that this leaked to the press does have a distinct whiff of 'deep state' about it

jason waterfalls (gbx), Monday, 15 May 2017 21:17 (seven years ago) link

whoever said Trump couldn't have colluded with Russia because if he did he would've bragged about it by now was apparently totally on the money

unless he totally forgot about it which is also possibly

frogbs, Monday, 15 May 2017 21:21 (seven years ago) link

this could go in one of the 'free speech' threads, but why not put it here.

new chair of appropriations committee just gave "a brief and innocuous note at the bottom of a personal letter" that warned a donor, a bank board member, that a bank employee was involved in political activity against him:

He openly colluded. He was a conduit of Russian disinformation. He praised the leaks and misrepresented their contents -- exactly like Russia.

frogbs, Monday, 15 May 2017 21:31 (seven years ago) link

like seriously, imagine how much classified info would've leaked out had Trump actually read his briefings

frogbs, Monday, 15 May 2017 21:32 (seven years ago) link

was thinking about all this over the weekend re: the comey sitch etc

are you ready for some GAME THEORY??? what is the actual point of hashtag-the-resistance? why on earth are all of the twitter centrist hillary dem types so bent on impeachment?

their goals are, objectively, 1. president mike pence and 2. liberals falling in love with the security services.

both of those things are bad! i think trump's bumbling incompetence and ego-driven chaos might be the best we can hope for out of our current political moment.

a unified pence-mcconnell-ryan troika working under a right-wing supreme court (thanks obama & senate dems) will bring us full-steam back to the coolidge era. i honestly think trump is a lesser villain than that (omg i'm objectively pro-trump!)

goole, Monday, 15 May 2017 21:32 (seven years ago) link

btw can't believe I'm saying this but I can't wait for Spicy tomorrow

and this is just a v wtf mischaracterization - I see impeachment chatter on twitter from the crankiest cranks of the left, berniebros, Sarah Silverman's celeberal crew etc.

Οὖτις, Monday, 15 May 2017 21:41 (seven years ago) link

probably true! but probably not Americans and most likely Muslims so y'know who gives a shit amirite

Οὖτις, Monday, 15 May 2017 21:41 (seven years ago) link

How in the world does something like that get leaked? Aren't there just a finite number of people in the room with him when he's having these meetings?

Josh in Chicago, Monday, 15 May 2017 21:42 (seven years ago) link

for what it's worth, i think that mike pence is as much of a shit show as donald trump and just because (unlike trump) he has a coherent agenda doesn't mean that he will be able to accomplish his aims any more effectively than trump. especially considering a) an impeachment trial if started later this year would likely last well throughout 2018, casting a shadow over the mid-terms, and b) a GOP that just impeached its own president would be reeling, not in any position to make the sweeping changes that the administration surely would like to make

meekseeks mill (voodoo chili), Monday, 15 May 2017 21:43 (seven years ago) link

according to current and former U.S. officials

According to former U.S. officials? Why would someone tell them, since they clearly weren't there? I wonder if this means something bad or wrong already happened because of his leak. How else would it get out?

manifestly untrue, far left twitter doesn't seem to care that much about impeachment

I imagine somebody in the room briefed the intelligence community, saying "hey guys, the russians know *x piece of information* now because trump couldn't keep his mouth shut," and that someone in the IC leaked the leak (as it were)

meekseeks mill (voodoo chili), Monday, 15 May 2017 21:44 (seven years ago) link

it's leak-ception

meekseeks mill (voodoo chili), Monday, 15 May 2017 21:45 (seven years ago) link

I think there's truth to what goole is saying.

But i also don't think a trump impeachment would consolidate consensus neoliberalism. I think it might fatally damage the Republicans -- if Trump is really impeached, even convicted of some kind of criminal misconduct, the idea that his horribleness is "fake news" would collapse -- creating some sort of unpredictable effect, maybe opening a space for the left as dems can no longer blame Republican opposition for their shittiness.

Sanders/Clinton was a productive battle of ideas in the end. It's the Republicans who keep us suspended in uselesness and lunacy

Treeship, Monday, 15 May 2017 21:45 (seven years ago) link

would tend to agree with this -- an actually successful impeachment or resignation would cast such a pall over the GOP that i doubt that they'd get much support in the midterms

jason waterfalls (gbx), Monday, 15 May 2017 21:46 (seven years ago) link

i know this is selfish, but i want mike pence to be president because i want to live
