@tinyrevolution
We can be 98% sure Trump didn't collude with Russia because if he had he'd have already blurted it out to show how smart he is

joshinchicago, you made me loll btw

you're talking about a very tiny slice of the pie. but a disturbingly powerful slice.

Their disproportionate power comes from the fact that the live and vote in extremely homogenous districts.

This means that their representatives live in quivering fear of Red-Hat wrath. (This holds even truer even when those congresspeople are, themselves, Red-Hatted.)

Personally I don't care whether what takes T. down is Russia, Rwanda, or Rhode Island. Just want him embarrassed and hampered and thwarted.

re tiny slice - i'm really talking about the Trump "supporters" who are hellbent on tax cuts. it's just the same 2-3% of Americans who always want tax cuts, most(?) of whom are probably embarrassed by Trump. that 35% die hard are in it for the racism and saddo libs

constitutional crises they fly at u face (will), Friday, 12 May 2017 17:40 (seven years ago) link

People keep saying this, and it does matter, but it also matters that his approval rating among Democrats is lower than anybody else's ever. He won his election, in part, because some Democrats and Dem-leaning independents voted for him. They won't do that again.

― Guayaquil (eephus!)

not go go all nate silver on this, but the other thing you need to make sure you look at is _how many republicans there are_. someone who grows disenchanted with trump is likely to also grow disenchanted with the entire republican party. a drop in the number of people who identify as republicans is probably going to be more significant than a drop in the republicans' approval of trump.

increasingly bonkers (rushomancy), Friday, 12 May 2017 17:42 (seven years ago) link

but yes, your point about disproportionate power & homogenous districts is also correct

someone who grows disenchanted with trump

the point is this isn't happening with the party faithful

like I said a million posts ago, it's becoming clear that the GOP will countenance any crime, no matter how obvious or odious, in order to get their fuckin tax cut

so spicer not taking the opportunity to deny that trump has recordings seems...significant

Sean Spicer opened calmly and largely conceded the fact that the president said many untrue things this week. This is amazing.

right, which is why i look askance at the perpetual democratic nightmare that the republican party will somehow manage to disclaim all association with trump when things go south. things can't possibly "go south" enough for them to do that - the republicans are, for better or for worse, irrevocably the Party of Trump.

you guys keep saying this but it's weirdly myopic. they were also the Party of Dubya, right up until he left office.

as soon as Trump's gone, it'll be like it never happened and none of them ever supported him, he wasn't a "real conservative" etc.

Especially since Spicer kept not answering the point

Ned Raggett, Friday, 12 May 2017 18:42 (seven years ago) link

there are no tapes

Οὖτις, Friday, 12 May 2017 18:42 (seven years ago) link

even if there were it wouldn't matter because McConnell and Ryan don't care

Οὖτις, Friday, 12 May 2017 18:43 (seven years ago) link

Almost certainly there are no tapes. Quite why Spicer didn't SAY there are no tapes is the fun/funny part for now.

Ned Raggett, Friday, 12 May 2017 18:51 (seven years ago) link

Dems are too chickenshit about wanting to pick off phantom hordes of moderate Republicans to say "the party of Trump" would've been "the party of Rubio" and was the Party of Bush, Reagan, Goldwater, etc, and every one of those parties sucked because only rich people with guns and dead welfare babies could get in.

Charles Sykes on libtears: https://www.nytimes.com/2017/05/12/opinion/sunday/if-liberals-hate-him-then-trump-must-be-doing-something-right.html

What may have begun as a policy or a tactic in opposition has long since become a reflex. But there is an obvious price to be paid for essentially becoming a party devoted to trolling. In the long run, it’s hard to see how a party dedicated to liberal tears can remain a movement based on ideas or centered on principles.

Conservatives will care less about governing and more about scoring “wins” — and inflicting losses on the left — no matter how hollow the victories or flawed the policies. Ultimately, though, this will end badly because it is a moral and intellectual dead end, and very likely a political one as well.

The issue isn't whether there are tapes or not. The problem is the president tried to publicly blackmail the fbi director he just fired without cause--a man scheduled to testify in front of congress very soon about a criminal investigation involving the president's campaign.

not really a problem since the party in power dgaf. still, sure let's have some more hearings, keep the Senate distracted and bogged down w this etc

Even the establishment GOP got through two national conventions in which W was barely mentioned; I may be misremembering but he didn't even appear, right? As if his 8-year reign and "two" successful elections were but a footnote.
