pretty cool. not mindblowing but i like.

yeah its something that would've slotted into Sensuous though it feels a lot more developed than most of that album. video is amazing, of course.

Love it.
― afriendlypioneer, Friday, 12 May 2017 15:18 (six years ago) link
so that's the lead-off track? wow
― frogbs, Friday, 12 May 2017 15:22 (six years ago) link
it's really promising, i'm glad he's managed to push this sound further.
― ufo, Friday, 12 May 2017 15:29 (six years ago) link
as much as I like the stuff he's done since Point I do think it comes off sometimes like a collection of parts. those same parts are in this track of course - it really does seem like it uses "Fit Song" as sort of a launch point - but this definitely feels like a completed song. I've listened to it four times now and it's really growing on me.
― frogbs, Friday, 12 May 2017 15:34 (six years ago) link
It's much more grounded in the song than an exercise, which "Fit Song" feels like. Think his time with MetaFive helped him out.
― afriendlypioneer, Friday, 12 May 2017 15:36 (six years ago) link
yeah there's a real song with a climax to it, more than just a nice intricate groove bit like a lot of Point and Sensuous was.
it feels closer to the salyu x salyu album than either of those actually
― ufo, Friday, 12 May 2017 15:47 (six years ago) link
maybe I'm just wildly speculating but I'm guessing his recent divorce is gonna factor into the sound here
― frogbs, Friday, 12 May 2017 16:39 (six years ago) link
Is anyone getting a faint trace of Hosono from this or am I projecting?
― MaresNest, Friday, 12 May 2017 18:31 (six years ago) link
i have been listening to Miharu Koshi's "Parallelism" a lot these days and imo Cornelius's Fantasma-and-posts works are super influenced by that stuff. baroque robotic pop with lots of cool percussion, things zipping by, drum-and-bass influences, etc.
― AdamVania (Adam Bruneau), Friday, 12 May 2017 18:39 (six years ago) link
that album was produced by Hosono in 1984 and i highly recommend for fans of Cornelius. "Toubousha" sounds a lot like "Clash".
― AdamVania (Adam Bruneau), Friday, 12 May 2017 18:42 (six years ago) link
it does sound like something on Medicine Compilation. now I hear it.
― frogbs, Friday, 12 May 2017 18:44 (six years ago) link
loving this more an more, both msic and video. i love the calligraphy oscilloscope, that painting that starts waving and extruding and turning 3D, the elements drifting and clipping in and out of reality.

Momentary derail. How do we feel about the most recent Shugo Tokomaru record? Both artists make good companions I feel..

I admit most Cornelius I've heard I'm quite indifferent towards except for Fantasma and Point, which I really love, and I'm really impressed by what he's released from the new one so far. I reckon this is going to be great.
And I'm a big fan of Shugo Tokumaru; he's reliably good but that last one didn't end up being one of my favourites of his.

It's out in Japan, but I'm guessing they're not big on digital releases (?).

Don't think it's possible to buy w/o a Japanese account, though. I used to be able to buy stuff off International Amazon pages. :(
― afriendlypioneer, Wednesday, 28 June 2017 18:04 (six years ago) link
30 bucks on US amazon by third-party sellers. I'm going to hold out for a little bit.
― skip, Wednesday, 28 June 2017 19:09 (six years ago) link
I understand that Japanese artists/labels are reluctant to fully embrace digital sales since that's one of the few places that people still buy CDs in significant number, but I wish the distribution for a lot of stuff was better, at least for artists like Cornelius who have a profile in the West.

There are some jammy tracks but on the whole the album is a little too slow and ambient for my taste.
I'm sure others will like it a lot though.
― skip, Thursday, 29 June 2017 05:31 (six years ago) link
It doesn't sound anything like the the previous albums, so I'm pretty excited about it. Now I just need to acquaint myself with it a little more.
― afriendlypioneer, Thursday, 29 June 2017 15:46 (six years ago) link
on listen two now. its pretty cool. at first all the songs sounded the same. now it feels more like waves of sound.
what is that note he always uses w the repeater? that echoey clipped guitar that always leads into a bossa nova? is that a dotted fourth?
― AdamVania (Adam Bruneau), Friday, 30 June 2017 00:25 (six years ago) link
it is mellow af
― AdamVania (Adam Bruneau), Friday, 30 June 2017 00:26 (six years ago) link
on listen two as well. its cool how you can pick out so many sounds that were on the last three albums, but the compositions here are a lot different. not sure what the highlights or duds are, I kinda like the whole thing. in fact my main complaint about the album is that it isn't longer - it sounds so good I don't want it to end. it also occurs to me that this is the first Cornelius album without anything explicitly gimmicky on it, maybe "Helix/Spiral" but that's it.
― frogbs, Friday, 30 June 2017 03:05 (six years ago) link
anyway first impression is that this is not quite as great as Fantasma or Point but probably better than everything else he's done, which is about what I expected
― frogbs, Friday, 30 June 2017 03:08 (six years ago) link
Some of the end of "If You're Here" makes me think of Fripp/Summers. (Possibly a useless observation since it has little to do with the overall song.)
― Louie Ramirez y Sus Blechs (_Rudipherous_), Friday, 30 June 2017 03:30 (six years ago) link
The Rain Song is so great! so prog. folk picking acoustic guitar + buzzing synth drones. really love Surfing on a Mind Wave, Pt. 2 as well
― AdamVania (Adam Bruneau), Friday, 30 June 2017 04:54 (six years ago) link
the last track is the one I've been listening on repeat. pretty stunning in a low-key sort of way
definitely think this is a grower
― frogbs, Friday, 30 June 2017 13:11 (six years ago) link
"The Spell of a Vanishing Loveliness" took me aback at first, but he pulls it off. Who's singing with him?
― afriendlypioneer, Friday, 30 June 2017 13:32 (six years ago) link
that's Miki from Lush
― ufo, Friday, 30 June 2017 15:30 (six years ago) link
^i was just thinking about the words while listening this morning. someone upthread mentioned his divorce and this feels like a break up song. "my life/my child/this is now everything I am/still that's not enough". really love the pause after this line into "That was yesterday". time moves on. he gets by w a little help from his friends.
this record definitely has a melancholy feeling at times but it's not off-putting at all. more than any other Cornelius album this is a collection of songs rather than styles or sounds.

Out everywhere today. Cover art wasn't what I was expecting.

Seems the hype for this died considerably after the leak.
― afriendlypioneer, Friday, 21 July 2017 14:06 (six years ago) link
I dunno if it's because it wasn't released stateside yet or because Cornelius's star has faded in the last decade or so. The album is very good.
― frogbs, Friday, 21 July 2017 14:12 (six years ago) link
It's pretty good, based on my first listen. I got it from CD Japan along with the new DJ Krush last week. His use of stereo is dazzling, but it also feels like sleight-of-hand after a while -- for me the most fun part about this record is counting time, some of the stuff is super-cerebral. Amazing last track.
― she carries a torch. two torches, actually (Joan Crawford Loves Chachi), Friday, 21 July 2017 14:16 (six years ago) link
think it might be his best-sounding album overall. there's a weird trick where the guitars ring off the walls but all the reverb from the drums and cymbals are clipped off. actually the one thing it reminds me of is Zammuto (from The Books), who produces his records the same way. like you can tell every element was worked on in isolation and then assembled into what you get here. which of course is how he's been making music for two decades now, but the presence of actual songs does make it more interesting this go around.
― frogbs, Friday, 21 July 2017 14:28 (six years ago) link
Listening to this now.
Is Paddy McAloon given a writing credit on "In a Dream?" Because it's essentially "Appetite."
― Ⓓⓡ. (Johnny Fever), Friday, 21 July 2017 23:10 (six years ago) link
new one is really nice. in retrospect Mellow Waves feels like a run up to this. its actually kind of funky in spots but overall quite sad. the death of 2 YMO members I think weighs heavy on this. speaking of which it's a bit odd that he decided to re-record "Environmental" since it was just on the Metafive album from last year. I guess it's a much better fit here. anyways the long track "Dream in the Mist" is a real showstopper, could listen to an entire album like that
