guys i kinda hate most of sublime's catalog and i've been known to slowly back away from people at parties who talk about their love for sublime, but do i really have to point out that santeria uses a trope known as the narrator and date rape does not actually advocate date rape?

like, you guys know this and are calling the lyrics indefensible on aesthetic grounds or something, right?

all that said: would vote for "april 29, 1992 (miami)" which for some reason is missing here but in its absence will vote for the bland "what i got"

like, you guys know this and are calling the lyrics indefensible on aesthetic grounds or something, right?

i would fall in this camp, yes... at least wrt date rape

"So I take her to the can" ???? what does this mean????

"Spend some time in America
Dub style!"

what does this have to do with raping a teenage prostitute?

this bad is loathsome and perplexing

hoos, you don't need to be that smart. shit is shit.

HOOS pretty much OTM, lots of things to say about why sublime is a no go without resorting to strawmanning the lyrics IMHO

***OSCARBAITS FURIOUSLY*** (jjjusten), Tuesday, 5 May 2009 05:49 (fourteen years ago) link

Sublime's best original song is probably "Ebin." The song "40 oz To Freedom" isn't bad either. "Saw Red" with Gwen Stefani was okay.

I like a few of their covers a lot, including "Hope," "We're Only Gonna Die From Our Own Arrogance," "Scarlet Begonias," and "Rivers Of Babylon." I'd rather not vouch for any of their other songs, but these covers are probably their best stuff.

I never understood what the hype was all about with their self-titled.. it's mostly boring to me. The first album is really their only good record IMO.

Which one didn't inspire Jack Johnson?

"Doin' Time," right?

litcofsky, Tuesday, 5 May 2009 08:28 (fourteen years ago) link

The fact that "Date Rape" doesn't condone date rape doesn't automatically make the lyrics any good!

yes i think we are all capable of understanding why the lyrics are bad w/out making stuff up, guyz.

jack johnson isn't creepy adolescent rape-o music, it's just boring dude music.

akm, Tuesday, 5 May 2009 14:45 (fourteen years ago) link

adolescent rape-o music

I think comments like this are why Hoos felt he needed to remind you guys that its not a pro-rape song. Seriously WTF is with ILM slapping the "rape music" tag on shit they don't like? Can we stop that now? There are plenty of other, more valid, reasons to hate on this stuff.

I think "rape-o" describes the fanbase, not the song.

Again, "narrative".

yes i am aware that the song has a narrative component

like clowns passing out candy wearing blindfolds (call all destroyer), Tuesday, 5 May 2009 15:02 (fourteen years ago) link

Not all narratives are created equal, is the thing. When most of your best-known songs revolve around the common theme of forcing/coercing women who don't want you into doing things with you, it's fair to point that out and have the opinion that it's kind of gross.

I don't think akm was singling out any of those songs when he called Sublime "creepy adolescent rape-o music" though.

yeah, i generally fall into the camp that thinks sublime is stupid, but that wouldn't stop me from singing the lyrics to pretty much all of these songs drunk at a party

there's something a little rapey abt "wrong way" tbf

but but but he says it's the WRONG way!

nah i mean, part of their deal was they had a sort of scum-rock appeal -- the sleaziness is kind of by definition indefensible, it's not supposed to be defensible. a little of that thing goes a long way, imo, but joined up to catchy tunes and all it's more likely to make me laugh than freak me out. there are lots of good reasons to object to "santeria," but when it was on top 40 radio i thought it was funny.

would you ask tom petty that? (tipsy mothra), Tuesday, 5 May 2009 15:33 (fourteen years ago) link

Love all the neologisms posted on this therad: "scum-rock," "rape-rock."

The whole "scummy songs set to deceptively happy-sounding music sung by a band called Sublime" thing should work really, really well on paper; the problem is that the songs themselves aren't particularly well-written and come across as being oblivious to the dichotomy rather than playing it up.

never really cared for this one though

Mucho gusto me llamo bradley,
(glad to meet you my name is bradley)
Im hornier than ron jeremy,
And if you wanna get popped in your knee,
Just wipe that look off your bati face

You hate me cause I got what you need,
A pretty little daughter that we call mixie, and,
If you wanna get beat physically
It will be over in a minute if ya

So she told me to come over and I took that trip
And then then she pulled out my mushroom tip
And when it came out, it went drip drip drip
I didnt know she had the g.i. joe, kung foo grip

And it went - uhh
And the girl caress me down- uhh
And thats that lovin sound- it went uhh
And the girl caress me down- uhh
And thats that lovin sound

When I kiss mixie she makes me feel horny,
Cause Im the type of lover with the sensitivity,
When she kiss my neck and tickle me frenzy,
The right kind of lover on sunday morning.

En el otro lado es donde vivi,
(on the other side is where I lived (in the u.s.))
Con mi hijita, que se llama mixie,
(with my little daughter, whos name is mixie)
Y su hermana, si me quiere,
(and her sister, she really likes me)
Y ya horita, tenemos un bebe,
(and in a moment, well have a baby)

Sus padres sus tios me trataron matar
(your parents, your uncles tried to kill me)
But they did not get too far
Un poco despues tuve que regresar
(a little while later I had to come back)
Con un chingo de dinero
(with a shit load of money)
Cause you know Im a star

Me fui a costa rica
(I went to costa rica
)
Para tomar y sufear
(to drink and surf)
Placticaba con la rasa
(talking with the homies)
Cause they know who we are

Si no so dio cuenta
(if you didnt take notice)
Then I bet you never were
You must be a muneca
(you must be a sissy doll)
If your still standing still

And it went - uhh
And the girl caress me down- uhh
And thats that lovin sound- it went uhh
And the girl caress me down- uhh
And thats that lovin sound

Me gusta mi reggae,
(I like my reggae)
Me gusta punk rock,
(I like punk rock)
Pero la cosa que me gusta mas es panochita,
(but the thing I like most is pussy)

Ponga la nalga en la aire if you know who you are,
(put your ass in the air if you know who you are)
Ponga la nalga en la aire y empieza gritar,
(put your ass in the air and start to yell)

No tenga miedo, Im your papi,
(dont be scared, Im your dad..)
Take your chones, y les mandan a mi,
(take your panties and send them to me)
Levanta, levanta, tienes que gritar,
(get up, get up, you have to yell)
Levanta, levanta, tienes que bailar.
(get up, get up, you have to dance)

And it went - uhh
And the girl caress me down- uhh
And thats that lovin sound- it went uhh
And the girl caress me down- uhh
And thats that lovin sound
