still can't imagine a greater loss of dignity moment than Cruz phonebanking for the man who called his wife ugly and accused his father of killing Kennedy. but his presidency is still young.

Guess the 'showboat' line basically confirms comey got shitcanned because trump was jealous of comey's screen time

When Comey met Trump at WH 2 days after inauguration, Trump immediately goes "there he is...this guy's even more famous than me!" har har har everyone laughs.

Something in Annapolis, at least. Linked a tweet upthread.

I'm sure YOU don't, but

"I don't see that as a conflict of interest," Sarah Huckabee Sanders says, of Trump asking Comey if he's under investigation.

— Josh Dawsey (@jdawsey1) May 11, 2017

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 11 May 2017 18:17 (seven years ago) link

"His interests were a desire to not be investigated and an interest in hearing from the Director that he was not under investigation. Where's the conflict?"

Sanders claimed she talked to 'countless' FBI agents unhappy with Comey. Beyond the propriety of that, when that was followed up on

.@SHSanders45 won't quantify what a "large number" of FBI agents that she's spoken to entails. Won't give a ballpark.

Whole LOT of fanfic right now on Twitter about a bunch of purported raids, the whole thing I'm sticking with at present is the Annapolis report simply because that came from a reporter who had confirmed with the FBI. We'll see.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 11 May 2017 18:34 (seven years ago) link

Funny but there about the conflict of interest question when Sanders said something like "I agree with the fine legal minds who have turned their attention to this issue...over the last hour"

He does seem to9 think he is still on the apprentice where firing people is actually a central design factor.

& the timing of the visiting Russians does just seem to speak of a level of sociopathic disconnect.

But that's probably obvious.

Stevolende, Thursday, 11 May 2017 19:18 (seven years ago) link

I can't think of a private sector workplace Trump wouldn't have been fired from about 15,000 times over based on his behavior. This 'Russians in the Oval Office' shit is like inviting some competitors to your office and letting them sit at your unlocked computer while you drop a deuce. Except, y'know, much more potentially impactful.

With every statement, by himself or spokespeople, Trump just steps in it deeper and deeper. This is the biggest, momentum-driven tizzy since Sessions had to recuse himself (lotta good that did).

Just wanna dump this in here while it's at front-of-mind for me: The whole Pence-would-be-much-worse narrative just makes me think, when was the last time you (meaning the person advancing that narrative at that moment) paid any attention to Mike Pence? The guy is as dumb as a brick. He's single-minded in the way a fucking tortoise is single-minded; any interview I've ever seen with him, he has stuck to literally repeating the same two or three simple declarative statements, with minor variation, until the whole thing is over. Confront him with facts that directly contradict what he's saying, and he'll just repeat what he said the first time. But that's not craftiness, it's a complete inability to improvise a thought. He has no actual knowledge or command of any issue. He's every bit as stupid as Trump, but he gives the appearance of possessing greater self-control because he's too dumb to have emotions, basically.

Malcolm X, Martin Luther King, Jr, and Violent J (誤訳侮辱), Thursday, 11 May 2017 19:34 (seven years ago) link

He's as stupid as purported constitutional scholar Mike Lee. Stupid people can only color within the lines, which is why the GOP secretly hopes with Trump gone their agenda will be more successful in Congress. It might be if the party hasn't been damaged. With Pence as president, though, the Republicans lose in 2020, just like they would have lost if Pence, Perry, Walker, the Plankton with a Hair Picce, or the other imbeciles and mouth breathers had been the nominee.

the Rain Man of nationalism. (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Thursday, 11 May 2017 19:37 (seven years ago) link

I want to believe that's true but Dubya got reelected.

evol j, Thursday, 11 May 2017 19:40 (seven years ago) link

Pence is def stupid, but he doesn't have the other fatal flaws that Trump does - the unpredictability, general ignorance of how govt works, wildly inconsistent positions, etc. Odds are he would be a more effective/malleable legislator that wouldn't throw up random roadblocks and crises in congress' way, allowing for the implementation of broader swathes of the GOP agenda. Dumb as he may be, he signed bills into law as governor, he is at least familiar with that process.

Οὖτις, Thursday, 11 May 2017 19:44 (seven years ago) link

in the current situation, Trump's fatal flaws are the nation's saving grace, the only thing standing between us and total GOP armageddon

thing is, if trump actually resigned or was impeached, it would (or should) be an albatross around the neck of every republican that supported him

wouldn't put it past the dems to still fuck up an opportunity like that, but the deck would be stacked against the GOP in 2018

jason waterfalls (gbx), Thursday, 11 May 2017 19:54 (seven years ago) link

Trump will never ever ever ever ever ever ever ever resign. He will need to be removed bodily if it ever comes down to it. Not because he wants the job but because he so clearly deserves the job, because he is so clearly the best for the job, because he is not done winning, for god's sake.

I know T.'s not a smart or plan-making or calculating person, but every time he does some random macho stupid jingo shit, two things happen:

1. The media and professional classes gasp, scratch their heads, and clutch their collective pearls and say THIS IS NOT NORMAL.

2. A jillion redhatters cream in their pants and howl for more, because NOT NORMAL is exactly what they were voting for. Trumpism is Brawndo and it's what they crave.

He's no genius but we know he loves both of those results, so he keeps doing the behavior that delivers them. He's pretty easily understood to be a lab rat pushing the bar that releases the crack-pellet.
