hated this band in high school hate them now and fuck southern california
How it took fifty-something posts to get straight to the point I've no idea, but hey I'll take it.

Dear ILM, I appreciate this constant rash of antipathy towards sublime thats been about in the last week, keep it up.
it's a rare show of unity for us.

walked back my appreciation for the singles after shamed by college friend who read the lyrics closer (but not necessarily correctly), but still think dude knew his way around a melody and socal+hippie shit rubs up against the pleasure centers

"santeria." still like that album. it's catchy.

(it's possible that my view has been colored -- or at least not obstructed -- by not actually personally knowing any of these bro-type cali dudes, or any fraternity brothers of any kind for at least 20 years. i understand that sublime fan frat bros are awful people. but it's just an abstract thing to me.)
― would you ask tom petty that? (tipsy mothra), Tuesday, 5 May 2009 03:41 (fourteen years ago) link
I was actually a bit more ambivalent to them two weeks ago, and while there are many far worse things than Santaria or What I Got, it's thanks to that thread about their sub-idiotic song about the LA Riots that I not only can't stand them, but really dislike them. Thinking of all the people I've known who have liked Sublime makes it worse, too.
― Edward Saroyan, Tuesday, 5 May 2009 03:53 (fourteen years ago) link
which thread? (sorry i have not been paying attn. to sublime-related material.)
anyway, american ILM has a massive and mostly well-considered hang-up with bro-culture (see also dave matthews). in the case of sublime i think it sort of unnecessarily trashes a pretty entertaining punky pop band. but i guess it's a small price to pay for holding the line against the cargo-shorted hordes.
― would you ask tom petty that? (tipsy mothra), Tuesday, 5 May 2009 04:13 (fourteen years ago) link
(and, you know. i own some cargo-ish shorts. and have been to bonnaroo. i probably am the enemy.)

chaki (rip) and gygax (rip) are the only other ilxors i know who would rep for sublime. i stand tall with them.

guys i kinda hate most of sublime's catalog and i've been known to slowly back away from people at parties who talk about their love for sublime, but do i really have to point out that santeria uses a trope known as the narrator and date rape does not actually advocate date rape?
like, you guys know this and are calling the lyrics indefensible on aesthetic grounds or something, right?
all that said: would vote for "april 29, 1992 (miami)" which for some reason is missing here but in its absence will vote for the bland "what i got"

HOOS pretty much OTM, lots of things to say about why sublime is a no go without resorting to strawmanning the lyrics IMHO
― ***OSCARBAITS FURIOUSLY*** (jjjusten), Tuesday, 5 May 2009 05:49 (fourteen years ago) link
Sublime's best original song is probably "Ebin." The song "40 oz To Freedom" isn't bad either. "Saw Red" with Gwen Stefani was okay.
I like a few of their covers a lot, including "Hope," "We're Only Gonna Die From Our Own Arrogance," "Scarlet Begonias," and "Rivers Of Babylon." I'd rather not vouch for any of their other songs, but these covers are probably their best stuff.
I never understood what the hype was all about with their self-titled.. it's mostly boring to me. The first album is really their only good record IMO.

"Doin' Time," right?
― litcofsky, Tuesday, 5 May 2009 08:28 (fourteen years ago) link
The fact that "Date Rape" doesn't condone date rape doesn't automatically make the lyrics any good!

adolescent rape-o music
I think comments like this are why Hoos felt he needed to remind you guys that its not a pro-rape song. Seriously WTF is with ILM slapping the "rape music" tag on shit they don't like? Can we stop that now? There are plenty of other, more valid, reasons to hate on this stuff.

yes i am aware that the song has a narrative component
― like clowns passing out candy wearing blindfolds (call all destroyer), Tuesday, 5 May 2009 15:02 (fourteen years ago) link
Not all narratives are created equal, is the thing. When most of your best-known songs revolve around the common theme of forcing/coercing women who don't want you into doing things with you, it's fair to point that out and have the opinion that it's kind of gross.
― the freakish wonder of nature that is "Beat Me" (HI DERE), Tuesday, 5 May 2009 15:06 (fourteen years ago) link
I don't think akm was singling out any of those songs when he called Sublime "creepy adolescent rape-o music" though.

yeah, i generally fall into the camp that thinks sublime is stupid, but that wouldn't stop me from singing the lyrics to pretty much all of these songs drunk at a party

but but but he says it's the WRONG way!
nah i mean, part of their deal was they had a sort of scum-rock appeal -- the sleaziness is kind of by definition indefensible, it's not supposed to be defensible. a little of that thing goes a long way, imo, but joined up to catchy tunes and all it's more likely to make me laugh than freak me out. there are lots of good reasons to object to "santeria," but when it was on top 40 radio i thought it was funny.

The whole "scummy songs set to deceptively happy-sounding music sung by a band called Sublime" thing should work really, really well on paper; the problem is that the songs themselves aren't particularly well-written and come across as being oblivious to the dichotomy rather than playing it up.
